Charity fundraising is strictly regulated by law.
Collections
You must obtain permission and/or a licence before you collect money. In a public
place, you need to obtain a licence from your local council, always contact them well
in advance of your collection. On private property, such as a shopping centre, you will
need permission from the owner or manager of the property.
Please contact WellChild before organising a collection – we can provide you with
supporting materials such as collecting tins & t-shirts.
Printed Materials
Always include our charity name and charity registration number as follows:
WellChild is a Registered Charity No. 289600.
Catering
Always contact your local environmental health department for advice before
planning to serve food. For alcohol, a licence (or ‘occasional permission’ for a one-off
event) must be obtained from the local licensing justice - alternatively, use a venue
that already holds a licence.
Lottery
A lottery is where tickets are sold with the chance of a prize. Where an element of
skill is involved, such as guessing the weight of a baby, it becomes a competition and
has fewer restrictions.
Private Lottery
Where a raffle is limited to members of a society, work place or premises (e.g. a
school, a pub or club), you do not need a licence. The draw must take place on the
premises where the tickets are sold.
Small Lottery
A draw as part of a wider event. There can be no cash prizes and the total value of
purchased prizes must be £250 or less. There is no limit on the value of donated prizes.
If you would like to know more about the legalities of a planned event,
please contact your local authority.
