Surah Al-Ikhlas

We shall now look at Surah Al-Ikhlas. The title of

this surah can be translated as “The Chapter
of Sincerity.” It tells us about being sincere in
our belief towards Allah and to be free from
believing in anyone except Allah.

Here is a translation of the meaning of this

surah into English1:

Surah Al-Ikhlas

During the time of the Messenger of Allah

many of the people worshiped other things
instead of Allah. This is why Allah sent the
Prophet Muhammad to call the people to
worship Allah alone (tawheed).

The people at the time had many strange

beliefs about their gods. They believed that
many of their gods had sons, daughters,
mothers and fathers.

One of the companions of the Messenger of

Allah , a man called Ubayy ibn Ka’b,
informed us that one time a group of these
people came to the Messenger of Allah
and asked him to tell them about the lineage
of Allah.

Lineage means information on a person’s

father and mother and who their family is.

When these people asked this question, Allah

revealed this surah to the Messenger of Allah
which explains to them that Allah doesn’t
have a lineage and that Allah is unique.2

Surah Al-Ikhlas

This surah starts with the word qul, which is a

command meaning to say. The Messenger of
Allah was commanded by Allah to tell
these people about Allah.

This is a very important surah because it gives

us an explanation of who Allah is and what we
must believe about him.

In fact the Messenger of Allah explained to

us that this surah is equivalent to one third of
the Qur’an!

One of the companions of the Messenger of

Allah , Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudree told us that
the Messenger of Allah once said about this
surah “By the One in whose Hand lies my soul,
indeed it is equivalent to one third of the
Qur’an.”3

And he once asked his companions if they

were able to recite one third of the Qur’an in
one night. When they replied that this was
difficult he said “Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad is
one third of the Qur’an.”4

Surah Al-Ikhlas

Allah has been very generous here. He gives

us the equivalent of the reward for reciting
one third of the Qur’an - just for reciting just
this surah!

Isn’t this amazing? If you have memorised this

surah and you recite it you could get a
reward equivalent to reciting one third of the
Qur’an just for reciting this surah.
