CABARRUS COUNTY SCHOOLS

Welcome

from Christopher Lowder

2016-2017
School Year
Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year! We are
excited about the new year and look forward to
educating your children.
Cabarrus County Schools continues our tradition of
offering families a variety of educational opportunities
this year with the opening of our second early college
Cabarrus Early College of Technology.
Additionally, students attending W.R. Odell Elementary
in grades 3-5 will have a brand new building this year.
Students in kindergarten, first and second grades will
remain at on the existing Odell campus W.R. Odell
Primary as it will now be called. Additionally, Charles
E. Boger Elementary and Royal Oaks Elementary will
share a location for the 2016-2017 school year while
construction on a new Royal Oaks Elementary begins.
Our staff has spent the summer attending numerous
professional development conferences and classes
so that we can continue to provide our students with
innovative classroom experiences and enrichment
opportunities.
Of course, technology will continue to play a role
in how we deliver instruction, but we know that no
device, app or digital tool can ever take the place of
a great teacher delivering an engaging lesson. Our
teachers continue to lead the way in effectiveness for
our region ranking #1 for the third consecutive year
based on student growth data.
We are grateful for the opportunity to educate your
children and for your support of our school system.
Were excited about the new school year and cant
wait to get started!
Thank you for choosing Cabarrus County Schools.
Lets make it a great year!
Sincerely,

Chris

School Cancellations, Delays

and Early Dismissals
Cabarrus County Schools wants to help
parents, staff and the community prepare
for any changes to the school schedule

The superintendent uses information
obtained from weather forecasts and

district personnel about road conditions

when determining whether school should
be cancelled, delayed, or dismissed early
due to severe weather.

As a general reminder, the CCS Information

Line, 704-784-6197, is also updated with
current information about any district-wide
school closings or delays.

Information about school cancellations,

delays and early dismissals will be
posted to the district website at www.
cabarrus.k12.nc.us. Additionally, the CCS
Information Office will contact families
and staff via the Blackboard Connect
notification system with an appropriate
message. Information also will be posted
to Time Warner Cable Channel 21, CCS

and shared with local media outlets.

In order to comply with state law,

students are required to make up days
missed when school is cancelled. The

easy. However, we always err on the
side of caution to keep our students and
employees safe.

Please keep in mind that no

announcement means school is operating
on a normal schedule. However, when
school must be dismissed early or is
closed, parents should make arrangements
for childcare, as the KIDS:PLUS after-school
and before-school programs will not
operate that day.

Regular Lunch

2016-2017

MAKING MEAL SELECTIONS

Breakfast

The School Nutrition Program offers a complete

breakfast which includes a grain and/or protein,
milk, juice and cup fruit. A Child can refuse one
of these components but must take a fruit or juice
and it will remain a qualifying USDA breakfast;
however, the cost will be the same. If a Child
chooses individual items, there will be an a la
carte charge.

A USDA qualifying lunch includes items from each

of the 5 food groups: Protein, Grain, Vegetable,
Fruit and Milk. Children must take 3 of the 5 food
groups and 1 of those chosen foods much be a
cup fruit or vegetable choice to be a complete
USDA qualifying meal. If a child chooses only 3 or
4 of the required food groups, there is no change
in cost. Please note at times 1 to 2 food groups
(components) are combined in one food item.
Children cannot substitute one food group for
another. Salad Bars are offered at all grade levels
daily. For high school and middle school we offer a
Quick Bite and Healthy Cart meal option which
are also a USDA qualifying meal.

Diet Order

Cabarrus County Schools School Nutrition will

provide food substitutions for any child who qualifies

CCS uses Standardsbased grading to assess
students level of mastery
of grade level standards.

Students earn a 1-4

Common Course of Study.
For more information
about grading, visit the
CCS district website at
www.cabarus.k12.nc.us

CABARRUS COUNTY SCHOOLS

Students Head Back to Class in July

For students enrolled at Wolf Meadow
Elementary School July is the New
August. Students began the 2016-2017
school year on Wednesday, July 20th. It
was the first day under the new balanced
(year-round) calendar. The Cabarrus
County Board of Education approved the

schools move to a balanced calendar

last year as a way to tackle summer
learning loss. Students will have breaks
throughout the school year. During these
breaks, the school will offer camps that
focus on a variety of themes that appeal
to students interests.

Cabarrus County Schools will open a new

W.R. Odell Elementary School in August.
The new Odell School, which will house
students in grades 3-5, is being built
on the site of the former W.R. Odell
Elementary School at the corner of
N.C. Hwy 73 and Odell School Road.
Students in grades K-2 will attend Odell
Primary School (located in the current

Transportation & School Bus Safety

Parents and guardians: The greatest concern
of Cabarrus County Schools is that your
children will be safe when traveling to and
from school. The following guidelines have
been developed by Cabarrus County Schools
to help ensure the safety of all students.

SAFTEY GUIDELINES

Secure all loose or hand carried items

by placing them in book bags or school
bags. Make sure any drawstrings are
secured or removed.
Secure all loose or hand carried items
by placing them in book bags or school
bags. Make sure any drawstrings are
secured or removed.
Objects such as band instruments,
school projects, etc. which are too large
to hold in a students lap pose a hazard
to all bus occupants. Federal guidelines
prohibit the transporting of these items
on the school bus so please arrange
to deliver these items to school via a
parent/guardian vehicle.
Please escort young children to the bus
stop. Older children and teens should
walk in groups for safety.
Never speak to strangers at the bus
stop and never get into a car with
a stranger. Immediately report any
suspicious persons or occurrences
to parents/guardians and/or school
officials.
Students should not run and/or play
while waiting for the bus and must
always keep their hands to themselves.
Stand in the driveway/designated area,
at least 10 feet away from the roadway
while waiting for the bus. Stay off the
roadway.
Respect the Danger Zone. This is
10 feet wide (5 giant steps) on all sides
of the bus.
When crossing the street at a bus
stop, make sure the bus is stopped,
the door is open, the stop signal is
out and all other traffic has come to a
complete stop before attempting to
get on the bus.

Independent Tribune

Always cross in front of the bus within

sight of the bus driver.
Never stop to pick up anything you
drop. Go and tell the driver first.
Never push anyone while entering or
exiting the bus.
Hold the handrail while entering or
exiting the bus.
Go directly to a seat when entering a
bus, remain seated and face forward
during the entire ride.
Sit quietly in your seat while riding
on the bus and keep your hands to
yourself.
Always be silent when a bus comes to a
railroad crossing.
Always keep head and hands inside
the bus.
Do not throw objects inside the bus or
out of the windows.
Never play with the emergency exits.
Use the back door only in an emergency.
If there is an emergency, listen to the
driver and follow instructions.
Enter or exit the bus with the consent
of the bus driver and only by the front
door, except in case of an emergency.
Look both ways while exiting the bus
and crossing in front of the bus. Watch
for the traffic from both directions
to come to a complete stop before
crossing the street. Wait for the driver
to signal you, and walk quickly and
directly to the safety of the curb. Never
go behind the bus.
Parents/Guardians if possible, meet
your child at the bus stop after school.
Please wait on the side of the street
where the child will be dropped off, not
across the street.

TRANSPORTATION REGULATIONS

Students will be assigned to one bus

stop on a morning bus run and one bus
stop on an afternoon bus run.
Be at your stop 10-15 minutes before
the bus is scheduled to arrive and
watch for the bus every morning.
Only students assigned to authorized

Welcome Back

STUDENT CONDUCT

Students are required to follow the directions

of the bus driver, respect other riders on the
bus, to follow the rules listed above, to follow
the Cabarrus County Schools Student Code
of Conduct, and to take care of the bus and
school property. Failure to do so may result
in a suspension of the school transportation
services. Damage repairs will be charged
back to students / parents. Suspension
may be invoked after an administrator
investigates the reported misconduct.

Administrators may prosecute a student or

adult under state law for the following acts:
Willfully trespassing upon or damaging
a school bus.
Entering a school bus or activity bus
after being forbidden to do so.
Refusing to leave a bus upon request.
Throwing an object out of the bus
that causes injuries or other property
damage.
Willfully stopping, impeding, delaying or
detaining a school bus or activity bus.

CABARRUS COUNTY SCHOOLS

bus stops on the bus run are permitted

to ride a school bus.
Students will NOT be permitted to ride
home with other students due to the
regulations of the North Carolina State
Tort Claims Act and overcrowding on
our school buses.
Students who do not ride their assigned
bus for 10 consecutive school days
will be removed from the bus roster. If
needed, parents will need to resubmit a
transportation request at the school.

School bus rules and actions of school bus

drivers are implemented for the safety of
students. All school system employees feel
a great responsibility to parents and the
community to ensure the safety of school
bus passengers. Help us promote a safe
and efficient school bus operation through
your support and cooperation. Remember,
school-provided transportation is a
privilege, not a right.

KANNAPOLIS CITY SCHOOLS

Welcome

from Chip Buckwell, Ed.D

KCS Superintendent
2016-2017
School Year
2016-17 brings new opportunities for
students in Kannapolis City Schools
Exciting things are happening in Kannapolis City
Schools, and were thrilled to welcome everyone
back for another great school year!
During 2016-2017, we will launch our Engineering
Academy at A.L. Brown High School. Students
enrolled in the Engineering Academy will take
part in hands-on, real world projects that will
help them master science and prepare them
for success in college and careers. We also will
expand our innovative partnership with Rowan
Cabarrus Community College that allows KCS
students to become certified welders when
they graduate from high school. Our Welding
Certification program makes students eligible
for high paying jobs right out of high school and
gives them the chance to pursue continued
technical education at the college level. It is one
of many certification programs that we offer in
Kannapolis City Schools. During 2016-2017, we
also will increase our online course offerings and
return art classes to Kannapolis Middle School.
As we enter 2017, we will continue very positive
momentum from last year. During 2016, we
celebrated many accomplishments. One of our
students, Samuel Jijon-Bacilio, was named the
top Culinary Art student in North Carolina. He
is part of A.L. Browns Culinary Arts program
and a wonderful representative of our school
system and state. Two of our 2016 graduates

earned prestigious appointments to U.S. Military

Academies, and the Class of 2016 earned
more than $3 million in scholarships. KCS also
is the home of the National Music Educator
of the Year. A.L. Brown music teacher, Gordon
Snyder, was named the top music educator in
the country out of more than 2,000 nominees.
We also celebrated a North Carolina Teacher
of Excellence, multiple students that earned
statewide honors in the Young Authors contest,
and multiple award-winning scholar athletes.
We are extremely proud of our outstanding
students and staff in Kannapolis City Schools,
and we are looking forward to even more
accomplishments in 2016-2017. During the
coming year, we will finish construction on a
new building for Kannapolis Middle School.
It will open in August of 2017 and will offer
tremendous new resources for our students.
We also will open applications for exciting
new programs that will start in the 2017-2018
school year.
Beginning in August 2017, we will launch a
Spanish Language Immersion program, a Global
Studies program, and an A+ Arts focus in
Kannapolis City Schools. All of these programs
will provide tremendous opportunities for our
students and families. Families that live within
the Kannapolis City School District will be able
to apply for these programs beginning in late fall
or early winter. We will make presentations at
each of our elementary schools this fall to give
parents more information and to explain the
application process.
All of these changes are part of our continuing
commitment to Creating the Future with our
students, families, and community. We are
excited about the 2016-2017 school year and
are looking forward to welcoming everyone
back on August 29th. Thank you for being part
of Kannapolis City Schools and have a wonderful
school year!
