ancy Reagan, the 40th First

Lady of the United States
and wife of president Ronald
Reagan, famously said, a
woman is like a tea bag, you cannot tell
how strong she is until you put her in hot
water. Ive always believed women have
a higher tolerance for pain think about
childbirth; would any man withstand it?
I highly doubt it. Our capacity to love,
hurt, feel and nurture is boundless. We
can be soft and tender when we want to,
and we can also be bold and fearless.
This month marks the 60th anniversary
of the South African womens march to
the Union Buildings in 1956. Women
came from all over the country to
participate in the march some wearing
traditional clothes, Indian women in
white saris, and domestic workers in their
uniforms (some even came with their
white madams children on their backs)!
One of the leaders of the march, Mama
Lillian Ngoyi, coordinated the women,
20 000 strong, to stand in absolute
silence in front of the building
for 30 minutes. Can you imagine
the power of that moment?
Its hard to imagine that a few
decades ago women didnt have the
rights we enjoy today, the freedom to
go wherever we please, work where
we want, and be seen as equal and
capable in our own right. We were
considered politically incompetent and
immature. The demonstration proves
that together we can force change into
motion in a non-violent manner. Our
ve powerful cover women from the
biggest television shows discuss the
strides women have made since these 60
years have passed, as well as the highs
and lows of working in their industry.
Check out their views on page 14.
This issue is dedicated to all the
women who marched so that we can
be free. Happy Womens Month!

I fell in love with BONA in 2014,

THE POSITION OF
WOMEN IN 2016
We explore some of the changes
that have taken place in womens
lives over the past 60 years.

Mimi: Women have come a long

way from just being in the kitchen
and playing the role of caregivers.
Since our grandmothers time, women
have always been doing things for
themselves; weve simply added
more onto our plates. We now
hold careers and continue to run
households as well. But, more than
anything, women are powerful!

INDUSTRY CHALLENGES
The ladies all agree that the industry
is tough and comes with a lot of
challenges, such as inequality, sexism,
a wage gap and lack of emotional
support. But, there is denitely growth
for women in the industry as long
as they are willing to work hard, be
patient and be open to learning, taking
directions and not cutting corners.

Dawn: Married and single women are

running their homes, while working as
CEOs for big companies, and doing
a better job than men. However, our
men have also evolved. They are more
supportive of career women and play
an active role in the home, helping
with traditionally female chores, such
as cooking. I look at my situation, and
it always reminds me of the migrant
workers. I had to relocate to another
province because of work, leaving
my family behind. My husband runs
our household, which in the past
was the opposite men left home
for work, but today roles have been
reversed. Women have also become
nancially empowered, which enables
us to get the help we need at home.

Nolly: I feel we are still struggling

to nd equality, and were always
competing with each other. We dont
congratulate, celebrate and stand
together as women. Also, the way
the industry has positioned women
is unfair in terms of salaries and
benets. The other thing is the way
were objectied all the time you
need to be sexy, toned, be a gym
freak or be in a tiny bikini to be
noticed. Yet, there are women of all
shapes and sizes in South Africa.
Andisiwe: I sometimes ght it, but
there is only so much we can ght
because the odds are against women.
There is a lot of typecasting for women
based on their physical appearance.

ENGLISH AUGUST 2016 | BONA.CO.ZA 15

Dawn: People dont realise

how much we go through
emotionally as performers.
We portray many different
characters, and in many ways,
so much that it takes its toll on
us. Most actresses suffer from
depression, but dont speak
about it. Were always trying
to put on this front you cant
be a woman about it, so you
go and cry by yourself in
the corner because nobody
cares. I believe we need
an injection of care,
especially for each other.
Sindi: I play a sad
character, and the

If you have a different body type to

that acceptable in the TV space, you
dont get cast for certain roles. Im not
sure if this is the same for men. If youre
a big girl, youll only be cast as the
big, bubbly and funny girl! Also, when
it comes to roles, men are favoured
to play the lead. There are very few
lms or series where a woman is a
matriarch. Its always the alpha male
this also applies to the writing. The
industry is still male-dominated,
which needs to change. However,
there are some shows that are
moving towards that, albeit slowly.
But, it could be better and faster.

UPFRONT & PERSONAL

mind doesnt know that this is just an

act because I have to immerse myself
in it. The sad thing is that sometimes
we never really come out of it. But,
because we are trained performers,
we tell ourselves that were out of it;
yet the body wont be. Most of us,
therefore suffer from fatigue, and
it has symptoms of depression.
Dawn: Training doesnt equip us to
cope with the emotional roller coaster
of acting. At the same time, it also
depends on whats happening in
your life. Sometimes it feels like life is
imitating art because we portray stuff
happening in our lives these are
deeper emotional issues we deal with.
It turns out that three or four of the
ladies are suffering from the same
symptoms. The left side of their bodies
gets tired, they have headaches and,
often, doctors tell them to rest and
not stress. However, stress is part of
their everyday reality as performers.
GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES
Although women are faced with
different challenges, the industry
also affords them opportunities to
get ahead. There are a lot of ladies
producing their own talk shows and
others working as directors former
Muvhango actress Nthabi Tau left the
soapie to work behind the scenes.
Dawn: Yes, the presence of women
behind the scenes is growing. You
now nd camerawomen and sound
ladies (to think there was none at some
stage). On our set, there are female
trainees that are shadowing directors
of photography and sound guys. Its
fascinating to watch because its mostly
young ladies who are passionate.
The industry is really changing.
Andisiwe: The stereotypes are going
slowly. I remember, back in varsity, if
you saw a girl doing cinematography

youd question why she was doing that.

The upcoming generation is completely
different. They are challenging
themselves and doing everything from
camerawork to editing, and its needed.
Sindi: We all have equal
opportunities; its up to you to go
out there and give it your all. Go to
school because most of our youngsters
think its all about being in front of the
camera. I encourage young people to
use their phones to access the Internet
and do research about the industry, so
that they know what to expect before
getting in. You will be met with a rude
awakening if you are not prepared. You
also need to be patient and passionate.

Mimi: There is so much hate and

anger around. The very same people
who claim to love you can turn around
and say horrible things about you.
Were also human beings with feelings.

WHAT I WISH I KNEW

Dawn: I didnt know I was going
to completely lose my privacy. The
only time Im free is when Im in the
bathroom. Its horrible sometimes
because its not that we dont
appreciate the love, but were also
human beings, and just want to be.
Some people even go as far as
saying, but we pay your salary.
WE LOVE OUR FANS
Being a celebrity is tricky, even the
nice ones have their off days. The
ladies clearly recognise the love

Mimi: I always laugh at how people

ask me for cookies and biscuits
because my character started out
as a tea lady on 7de Laan. This one
time, an old lady was talking to me
and every time she kept hitting my
arm (she must have been excited).
Nolly: I was at the airport in Cape
Town, and was hungry. Just as I
was about to eat, a lady asked me
if she could take a picture with me.

AFRICAN SKIN IS DIFFERENT

The PONDS Institute researched

African skin and found that:

The African climate and elements aect womens skin

dierently compared to other regions and African women
have a broader range of skin tones and types that need
care. This is why PONDS is tested on and designed
specically for African skin.

Darker skin tones generate 12 times more

melanin than lighter skin tones, so are more

prone to dark marks and patches.

The darker the skin is, the more oil it produces

up to 68 percent more oil than lighter skin.

Touching your face will cause

dirt and impurities to transfer to

A Split ends are natural, so they

trimming your hair regularly. Our hair

we dont always notice the length.

HAIR OIL
THE NEW MIRACLE?

air oils have caused a

frenzy in care regimes,
and we understand why.
Natural ingredients are
good for its health. There are oils
available for all your haircare needs,
whether to style, add moisture or
nourish it. Technical educator for
Schwarzkopf Smooth n Shine Tebogo
Lehutso says hair oils not only nourish
your hair, but aid in styling it too.

1
2

Argan oil This is often referred to

as the miracle oil. It nourishes your
hair, while also acting as a heat
protector and an intensive repair
treatment. According to Tebogo, this
oil nourishes the outer hair layers while
working on the cuticle. This leaves
your hair with a longer lasting shine.
It also reduces frizz, and softens it.
Coconut oil If you want your hair
to grow, this is your choice. It promotes
healthy hair, while also making it shiny
and protecting it from the inside.
Tea tree oil This has anti-bacterial
and anti-fungal properties. These
help treat scalp problems, such as
dandruff, and get rid of itchiness.
Amla oil This helps treat hair
loss as it strengthens it. The oil is
made with the Amla fruit from India,
and adds moisture to your hair to
prevent a dry and itchy scalp.
Castor oil This has many health
benets. It promotes growth,
conditions your hair, helps treat scalp
infections and strengthens the roots.
Moroccan oil For a treatment that
nourishes hair from the inside, this
oil works best, and even better on
lighter hair due to its light properties.

For maximum effect, without

weighing down your hair
or making it greasy, use
hair oil about four times a
week. Overuse can clog hair
cuticles, so use as directed
on the product. Tebogo says
that your hair needs to be
clean before applying oil,
because dirty hair looks
greasy and prevents the oils
from working as they should.

MASTERCLASS

CELEBRITY

GLAM SQUADS
JAWAD MAPHOTO, CELEBRITY
HAIRSTYLIST AND LAJAWI
SALON OWNER
Jawad has worked with many celebrities,
including Pearl Modiadie. He says
statement hairstyles are hot on the trend list
for spring. He advises that you experiment
with weaves; try blunt cuts and big, loose
hair. While natural hair continues to make
waves, with texture being the main focal
point, perming gives it volume and
makes it softer, Jawad says. Natural
textured extensions are a must, as
they give you volume and length
without straightening your hair.

VANESSA PLAATJIE, VEE ROSE

GOLD NAIL BOUTIQUE OWNER
Vanessa says her nail boutique
gives you more than what regular
salons offer. From hand massages
to full sets of nails, clients get a
pampering session. Its ambassador
DJ Zinhle always has gorgeous
nails. Nude is going to be big this
spring. This means a lot of natural
colours that are close to your skin
tone, Vanessa says. She adds
that metallic rose gold, dusty
teal green and red are also your
go-to colours. The ballerina nail
shape is also on the trend list.

MAPULA NDHLOVU,
PERSONAL TRAINER
Mapula has been training with
Amanda du Pont for about two
years. She says a balance between
weight training and cardio exercise
is important. Amanda and I do
strength training at least two to three
times a week. She then does cardio
exercises, which include running
5km to 10km, she says. Mapula
also encourages healthy eating. A
balanced diet is easy to maintain,
with enough protein intake and
snacking in between meals to keep
your energy at the right level. She
says you should also drink a lot of
water for your health and skin.

CLARA CHIMELOANE,
CELEBRITY MAKE-UP ARTIST
A smokey eye has always been considered
as night-time make-up, which is not the case.
Bonang Matheba is one of the leading
ladies with a daring personality that works
well with a smokey eye, Clara says. She
adds that your make-up should complement
your outt, while reecting your personality.
A bold, vibrant and energetic person can
wear a dark eye or bright lip at
any time of day. But, a timid
person can rock a clean look
or touch of pastel shades,
she explains. The beauty
hit list for spring includes
clean skin, lashes and
natural looking eyebrows.

LETHABO MABOI, CREATIVE

DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER
OF STYLE BY BOOGY
If you think of major hip-hop artists,
such as JR and Khuli Chana, then
Lethabo has probably styled them.
One of our favourite looks by Lethabo
is the denim shirt, cut-out denim
shorts and thigh-high shoes Pearl
Thusi wore at the J Cole concert. I
draw inspiration from the celebritys
personality, and occasion, says
Lethabo. She also says nding a
key item, shoes, colour and even
accessories, helps put the outt
together. African textures, colours and
patterns for fashion will also be big in
spring and summer. Hats are going
to take a back seat, while bags and
accessories drive the styles, she adds.

HARDUS BESTER, OWNER

OF BEST BODY SKIN
Khanyi Mbau is one of the brand
ambassadors for Best Body Skin.
Some of the treatments she has
done include a skin peel, LED
light therapy, carboxytherapy and
mesotherapy. Carboxytherapy is
used to help grow hair, as well as to
remove scars and stretch marks. Its
treatment starts with a full wellness
assessment and evaluation. Owner
Hardus Bester says having clients
such as DJ Fresh and Khanyi shows
that the treatments are safe for any
skin. The majority of our clients
are black, and frequently ask
about treatment for balding and
receding hairlines, Hardus says. B

GOOD PARENTING

CHILD SUPPORT

DONT GRIEVE THE CHILDREN

Child maintenance has been a sore point between parents who have
decided to part ways. However, the recent amendments to the Child
Maintenance Bill may be the answer. By Lungile Khumalo

50

What are the most

effective changes to the
Maintenance Bill?
The recent changes come down
heavily on parents who ignore their
responsibility to pay maintenance.
According to the bill, if a person
defaults on maintenance,
their personal details can be
submitted to the credit bureau.
This will prevent them from getting
credit while owing maintenance.
Other changes include:
A beneciary will be able to
claim maintenance in the city
or area they work, and not
only where they live, making it
easier to go to the maintenance
court during working hours.
There is a greater responsibility
being put on maintenance courts
to complete enquiries as speedily
as possible. This provision is for

ENGLISH AUGUST 2016 | BONA.CO.ZA

interim orders for maintenance,

pending the nalisation of the matter.
The views of the person obliged to
pay maintenance must be sought.
If the person who is supposed to
pay maintenance cannot be traced,
the court may grant an order
instructing relevant institutions, such
as cellphone service providers,
to supply contact information.
While introducing the Maintenance
Amendment Bill, the deputy minister
of Justice and Constitutional
Development, John Jeffery, said:
This, we believe, sends out a clear
message to maintenance defaulters
that their failure to support their
dependants is indefensible.

payments start?
Payments start after an application

ith too many

commitments and
too little money, must
one really pay child
maintenance? According to Sheri
Breslaw, a senior associate with
Fairbridges Wertheim Becker a
law rm in Cape Town specialising
in family law a child is entitled
to reasonable maintenance.
This will ensure that the childs needs,
such as clothing, housing, medical
care, education and training, as well
as recreation, are met. Both parents
have a duty to maintain the child
irrespective of whether adopted,
or born in or out of wedlock.
Reasonable maintenance
depends on the familys standard
of living and income.
At the end of the day, whether
you like it or not, your child
is your responsibility.

by the court. Only then is a court order issued to the

childs father to start paying maintenance. Payments
can be made by debit order or electronic transfer, or
deposited directly into the mothers bank account.
What happens if a father is
unemployed and cant pay?
In such a case, the childs mother is entitled
to apply for a child support grant from the
Department of Social Development.
What if the father stops paying?
Not paying maintenance once a court order is in place
is a criminal offence. If the order remains unpaid for
more than 10 days, the mother has three options:
1. To lay a criminal charge against the defaulter.
2. If the father is employed, a garnishee order
can be issued. This means his employer will
deduct the maintenance from his salary and
deposit it directly into the mothers account.
3. A warrant of execution can be issued, which entitles
the sheriff of the court to demand outstanding
money owed. If no funds are available, the mother
can instruct the sheriff to take any goods from the
fathers home, sell them, and give her the proceeds.
The maintenance ofcer can also have the defaulter
blacklisted, which would mean he will no longer be
able to apply for credit while owing maintenance. To
avoid punishment, the defaulter must prove to the court
that he is unable to pay due to a lack of income.
Can a father ensure that the maintenance he
is paying is being spent on his child, and that
the mother is not squandering the money?
This is a situation many fathers are faced with. But, usually,
once the money has been paid over to the mother, it is her
choice how she spends it to take care of the child. If it is
obvious that your child is going without, then it would be
best to raise your concerns with a maintenance ofcer.
How is maintenance calculated?
In South Africa, there is no stipulated monthly
amount. Maintenance is calculated by the
court after considering two factors:
1. The monthly expenses that are exclusively
related to your child (such as educational costs,
including school clothes and aftercare fees);
and costs shared by those living with the child
(such as rent, food, electricity or transport).
2. The income each parent earns.
Must grandparents support a child?
If neither parent can support or maintain the child,
the duty passes on to the grandparents.
For instance, if a father does not pay
maintenance for his child, the mother may
lodge an application against his parents. B

RELATIONSHIP ADVICE

THE INTIMIDATION GAME

The ideal partner

is someone who is
on your level, and
is inspired by your
success. He supports
you, and is not scared
off by your success.

ENGLISH AUGUST 2016 | BONA.CO.ZA

Intimidating is a word often used to explain why some women are

single. But, does this hold any weight? By Zukiswa Dlamini
any women seem to
have their lives together.
They excel at their jobs,
take care of their needs
and, sometimes, even those of their
loved ones. Add good looks and a
great personality to the equation, and
you have most peoples dream partner.
Why is it, then, that many women
who t this bill are single, and not
always by choice? There are many
reasons why some women who seem
to have it all are single, says Ramona
Bright, a relationship counsellor.
Some simply cant meet men they
consider to be on their level. Some
choose to be single because it can be
fun and liberating. Some are looking
for love, but dont get approached
as much as they would like.
For those who dont get suitors,
the reason cited is often that they
are too intimidating. The popularity
of the thinking that some women
are intimidating started in the past
20 years, as many started openly
climbing the career ladder, and
succeeded at it, Ramona explains.

SUCCESS IS NOT A THREAT

If your success intimidates a man,
chances are that he is not the one for
you. Before you start making excuses,
think about whether you would want
to be with a man who looks at your
success as a potential threat. Men who
are intimidated by womens success
tend to have a list of problematic ways
of thinking, warns Ramona. You often
nd that they need to be reassured
constantly, and need you as their
partner to ensure that they always feel
like the man of the house, even at your
expense. The ideal partner is someone
who is on your level, and is inspired
by your success. He supports you, and
is not scared off by your success.
When women hit their 30s, they
are often told to stop being picky
so that they can nd a partner.

However, men are never told to

drop their standards, so why should
you? Women should celebrate
themselves at every turn, shine,
do their best and never sacrice
their success to please a man.
INTIMIDATING?
There is never a good reason to
make you feel that you need to
lower your standards for love. But,
what exactly appears intimidating?
Often, the qualities that are seen
as intimidating are not a concern.
Condence, nancial independence
and self awareness are common
traits said to be intimidating. But,
these are actually good qualities.
They only intimidate insecure
people who have a need to control
others, Ramona explains.
However, there are instances
where some women are genuinely
intimidating. Some women are
aggressive, and that can put anyone
off. Others appear cold, which can
just be a way to ward off the high
number of harassers women endure.
All these things are relative. But, if a
man is really into you, he will see past
them and try to know the real you.
Another complaint about
successful women is that they use
their material gains to control other
people, especially in relationships.
The fact that your life is going
well is not a licence to treat others
badly. Make sure that intimidation
is not a reality in your life. Using
your position to make others feel
less about themselves is a problem,
and shows signs of insecurity
on your part, Ramona adds.
LOOKING FOR LOVE
Seeking a relationship can be more
complex for women who have been
labelled as intimidating, and feel that
there is something wrong with them.
The notion that you may have to

modify your behaviour in order to be

deserving of love is something many
people carry. If you want to modify
your behaviour in places where you
think it is harming you and your love
life, do so. But, be careful not to be
so easy to change that it makes you
lose a sense of who you are and what
you want. Compromise is essential to
a good relationship. But, that does not
mean you have to compromise who
you are, your dreams or success.
Things you can do to open
yourself up to potential suitors:
Get out there Sometimes, its not
that you are intimidating. Maybe
you just spend all your time at
home, church and work. If you
havent found your man at these
places yet, chances are that he is
not there. Go out, socialise, start
conversations with handsome
strangers and see what happens.
Ask for help Yes, you can
probably change your own tyres
and carry grocery bags. But,
when a man youre interested
in offers to help, let him. You
dont have to do everything by
yourself at all times. Learn to allow
men to treat you sometimes.
Dont snap It is annoying to be
told that you are intimidating. But,
instead of losing your cool and
proving men right, shrug it off, and
look for men who are not insecure.
Lessen the number If you go out
with a lot of women, you may
be making it harder for men to
approach you. It is somewhat
intimidating to approach a big
group of women; cut the number
to just two or three of you.
Say something If you see
someone youre into, who also
seems to be looking at you, make
the rst move. He might be shy
and you might not be; so why let
the opportunity pass you by? B

YOUR LOVE ADVICE

LETS TALK
Dr Luck offers practical advice on life, love and
sexual challenges.

HE IS COMPARING
ME WITH HIS EX
I am a 25-year-old lady in love
with a 27-year-old man. We have
been together for a year, and love
each other. He lost his ance two
years ago, and always compares
me with her. If I do something,
he tells me that his ance did it
differently. I love him, but I cannot
stand this. I dont think he is ready
to move on. What should I do?
Noluthando, Mpumalanga
Dear Noluthando: I agree that
your boyfriend is not ready to move
on. However, before you end the
relationship, you two should go to a
counsellor or pastor and discuss this
issue. Losing a loved one is painful,
and can take time for the bereaved to
move on. We often see the departed
in perfect terms, more so than when
they were alive, and hold on to that.
I know this too well; my husband died
in 1994, but I still talk about him.
I sometimes wonder if getting
re-married would not be unfair on
someone else. Give your boyfriend
time to heal; he found you just a
year after the death of the woman
he thought he would spend the rest
of his life with. Their ideas, plans
and hopes were lost when she
died. Talk about this, as well as the
possibility of seeking help from a
counsellor. I wish you the best.

54

I AM UNCOMFORTABLE
AROUND MY IN-LAWS
I am a 30-year-old woman, and have
been married for two years. I am
fortunate that my in-laws love me.
However, I have a problem with my
father-in-law. He tells me what to wear,
for which occasion, and sometimes
asks me to accompany him to the
malls. My husband sees no problem
with this, but I feel uncomfortable.
How do I tell my father-in-law how
I feel without offending him?
Lereko, Free State
Dear Lereko: Tell your husband
and father-in-law, and see how
they react. If they dont understand
how you feel about this unusual
circumstance, ask your own father,
uncle or brother to talk to them. This
is odd, but not horrible. However,
you need to be comfortable in your
own space, and this seems intrusive.

I AM IN LOVE WITH MY FRIEND

I am a 26-year-old mother of one.
I broke up with my sons father two
years ago, and have been single
ever since. I have developed feelings
for my friend, and he is not aware.
He is single, and a true friend;
we advise each other in times of
trouble. How do I break the ice?
Nozi, Cape Town

ENGLISH AUGUST 2016 | BONA.CO.ZA

Dear Nozi: Often times, good

friends make the best companions.
From having no secrets in between
to nishing each others sentences,
loving the same movies, laughing at
the same jokes and shopping together.
However, the reason these friendships
work is because there are boundaries
of no sexual intimacy. On the other
hand, good friends can become the
best lovers if the feeling is mutual.
In your situation, things are tricky
because one friend has developed
deeper feelings for the other. This
scenario has ruined many friendships.
You have three things to think about.
Discuss this with him, knowing that
the feeling may not be mutual, and
that he may like to remain friends
with you. If he goes for this option,
would you respect his choice, and
continue with the friendship, no
strings attached? Lastly, do you
perhaps rather just yearn for someone
to replace your ex, a possibility
that may ruin your friendship?

Financial accountants Zimkita Sidumo (33) and

interior designers. By Boitumelo Mmakou

While working full-time

jobs (Zimkita as a nancial

Design School. Thats
where we learnt to

When we started,
we only worked for

After a year, business started

hard to balance two jobs.
We are able to sustain the

beginning of the year. Throughout the year, we get timebased projects that we balance around our personal lives.
Although we always consult with our clients to
get a feel of what they want, we do have a signature
look a mix of modern and quirky. This means we go with a
clean, sleek and unique feel for each person or company.
The biggest misconception about interior design
in South Africa, especially among
black people, is that its only for the rich.
There are a number of affordable ways to
make your home look new; and as interior
designers, we are there to assist with that.
Our income is not consistent
because it depends on the
clients we have each month,
and the aspect of the job.
We charge a lot more if
its a company, and less
for small spaces.
We love what we do
and have been fortunate
to work with inuential
clients, such as Anele
Mdoda. This has opened up
opportunities for us to sign
deals with companies such
as Africa Leadership.
Some of the
challenges we face
include working with
difcult clients. Weve
also had our fair share
of disagreements.
However, good
communication and letting
one person lead at a
time makes us run the
business smoothly. B

SPEND
SMARTER

Being clever with your

cash now, is better for
you in the long run. By
Trevor Crighton

FIT FINANCE
elt-tightening means
spending smarter, not
depriving yourself of the
things you enjoy. With
the depreciating rand, as well as
increasing interest and ination rates,
you need to be smart with your money.

BUDGET, BUDGET, BUDGET

The starting point for smart money
management is budgeting properly.
When was the last time you sat
down and looked at your expenses?
Recording them on a spreadsheet can
be an eye-opener, and gives you a
much better grasp of your nances.
Break your expenses down into
xed costs (bond, car nance payments
and policies, which dont change
from month to month), regular but
variable costs (electricity and water
account, petrol or transport costs,
cellphone bill and groceries) and
luxuries (eating out, clothing, and
grooming products). Do this for about
four months to get a proper handle
on variable costs and establish trends;
you will be surprised at how easy
it is to nd ways to save money.
CONSIDER YOUR FIXED COSTS
Are there ways you can reduce your
regular monthly payments? Could
moving your bond to a different bank
or policy give you a better rate or more
favourable terms? Do you really need
all the cover offered by your insurer,
and are your policies in line with your
needs right now? What about bank
costs? Are you reaping the benets of
the type of account you use, or could
a cheaper option be just as useful?
Reducing the interest rate from
9.75% to 9.25% on your R750 000
home loan could save you R48 000
over the course of your loan period,
in terms of the monthly repayment
alone. At 9.75%, you pay around
R957 000 in interest, but reducing
your rate to 9.25% takes that cost
to just under R900 000. Youd also
be wise to put any additional cash
you have into the loan, to pay it off
faster while reducing the interest.

slab of chocolate, and therefore, your

pocket. Eating healthy can be more
expensive. But, in the long run, its
also an investment in your health. If
it helps you stay slim, you wont be
forced to spend money on new clothes
as your waistline expands! Also, look
for house brands and keep tabs on
sales. You can make signicant savings
with a simple mindset change.
Look at buying things, such as
cleaning products and non-perishable
foods, in bulk, to save money. A 1kg
packet of rice can cost around R12.99,
but a 5kg bag can cost R59.99. That
is R1 per kilo, less. Apply that kind of
saving across your basket and youre
looking at spending substantially less on
groceries. You also wont need to shop
as often, saving both time and petrol.

PACK A LUNCH BOX

You know that coffee you cant do
without from your favourite coffee
shop on your way to work? At R20 a
takeaway cappuccino, its costing you
about R400 a month, excluding tips
or the temptation of the snack counter.
For the same money, you could buy
six bags of good-quality coffee beans
and brew it yourself. And, you get a
lot more than 20 cups per month!
The same goes for the ofce
canteen. While many companies offer
healthy lunch options, the temptation
is always there to indulge in a burger
or a slice of cake. At a conservative
R25 per lunch for a plate of food
and the inevitable drink, youre
giving your employer R500 of your
salary back every month thats
R6 000 per year. Save this money
by cooking your own lunch meals.
GROCERY SHOPPING
So, youre buying your own coffee
and packing lunch. That doesnt mean
you can treat yourself when you go to
the supermarket. The average shopping
basket in South Africa containing 10
basic food items including fruit, veggies,
milk, eggs, maize meal and bread
cost between R187 and R224 in
August 2015. This depended on where
you shopped. By February this year,
that same basket cost between R214
and R240, and ination and interest
rates are going to drive prices up.
The drought we experienced has also
driven prices up dramatically. Retailers
have turned to other markets to source
products, in order to keep costs down.
This means South Africans are now
exposed to products that have travelled
long distances, have been preserved,
and may not be of the quality were
used to. Never mind the effects on
your pocket; you need to keep an
eye on your long-term health, too.
Look for healthy snack options;
theyre better than processed foods,
and often cheaper. The price of cocoa
has risen by more than 52% in the
past 24 months, which has obvious
effects on the cost of your favourite

PARTY SMART
This does not mean that you dont
deserve a romantic dinner or a steamreleasing night of partying. But, a little
planning can help you save money.
When you go to a restaurant,
choose your drinks wisely. Most
restaurants put a mark-up of over
200% on alcohol. They also have
costs to cover after all, but alcohol is
an easy target for huge increases.
Also, if youre going to have more
than one glass, rather buy the
bottle. In most cases, the cost of two
glasses matches what the restaurant
charges for the bottle anyway.
Nobody wants to look cheap, but
youre only hurting your pocket if youre
paying over the odds for something.
If you and your friends want to go
on a night out, don't use your cars.
Rather share a taxi and split the cost
of the trip. Also, keep an eye out for
specials and themed evenings going
to Ladies Night can save you money
on the R100+ cover charge at the door
before a certain time. Drink specials
can be party-friendly too; just be wary
of overdoing things. Set yourself a
spending limit or take cash; leave your
credit card at home. This ensures that
you dont wake up with a headache
and shock the next morning. B

HANDLING

INAPPROPRIATE

INTERVIEW

Recruitment specialists
share their advice on how to
handle tricky situations in
a professional way during
a job interview.
By Wilma den Hartigh

Picture Thinkstock

QUESTIONS

WORKLIFE

job interview can be a

nerve-racking experience
as you want to put your best
foot forward. Even though
you have prepared for any question
that can come your way, you can be
caught off guard if an interviewer
sneaks in an inappropriate question.
Kay Vittee, CEO of recruitment
company Quest Stafng Solutions,
says the purpose of an interview is
to objectively determine if someone
is the right person for a job and
if they will t into the company.
Applicants should only have to
answer job-specic questions.
However, sometimes questions are
not fair and can be discriminatory
in terms of the South African labour
legislation. Here are a few scenarios
that may be deemed inappropriate:

MEDICAL CONDITIONS
Questions related to HIV status can
be outright discriminatory, Kay says.
He, however, adds that it could be
important to ask this, depending on
the job. If a position requires body
contact, such as a sport coach, it
can be a relevant question as it
could impact on the candidates
ability to function in that role.
Lerato Phadi from online career
portal Job Mail explains that questions
relating to health issues might be
phrased this way: Are you aware
of any health issues you may be
suffering from at present that may
inuence your ability to perform
according to our expectations?
Employers cannot discriminate by
asking about HIV, depression, diabetes,
back problems and other medical
conditions. She says it will, however,
reect positively on a prospective
employee to disclose a condition that
may impact on their performance.
RELATIONSHIP STATUS AND
SEXUAL ORIENTATION
According to Kay, questions
about sexual orientation are
inappropriate and also constitute
sexual discrimination. Any answer

to this question should not be

relevant to an employers decision to
employ the jobseeker, she says.
The University of Cape Town Careers
Service advises that an interviewer
cannot ask the applicant if they are
gay or planning to have children
in the near future. If the potential
employer wants to probe into your
personal life, you can follow one of two
approaches. If youre comfortable with
answering inappropriate questions,
then go ahead. For example, if a
prospective employer enquires if
you have children, this could be a
satisfactory response: Yes, I do
have a child, as well as a strong
support system in place. However,
if youre not comfortable answering
the question, you can respond by
saying: I make a point of not mixing
personal and professional matters.
PLACE OF BIRTH
This is a question to determine a
persons citizenship or nationality.
Interviewers might ask this in a
conversational way, but Kay says a
persons citizenship should not affect
their employability in any way. It
is only relevant to determine if the
candidate has a work permit and is
legally allowed to work in the country.
The interviewer could ask a
follow-up question about the city
or suburb where the applicant
resides. Branch manager at Network
Recruitment, Shivani Parusram, says
interviewers cannot discriminate
against the distance between their
ofces and the candidates home.
They can only ask if you are willing
to relocate or if you will be able to
arrive at work on time, she says.
RELIGIOUS BELIEFS
Jobseekers do not have to answer
questions about religion or religious
holidays they observe. Shivani says you
can tell the interviewer if you prefer
not to discuss religion. The interviewer
would far sooner appreciate your
honesty and transparency. Try to
address these concerns; for example,

if you have to work on certain days

of the week or you need time off for
religious purposes, she explains.
Remain professional during an
interview even if the questions are too
personal or illegal. If the experience
was uncomfortable, raise the issue
with the companys human resources
department. However, the type of
questions asked in the interview
might indicate that the company
is not going to be a good t, even
if the job is what you want.

HOW TO
RESPOND TO
FACEBOOK
SNOOPING
Social media screening in
combination with traditional
recruitment methods is
becoming the norm in many
countries. A survey by the
Institute for Employment Studies
in London found that almost
half of all companies use
social media proles when
making hiring decisions.
Lerato says most recruiters
and employers look at a
candidates social media
platforms such as Facebook.
She says an employer might
ask a question such as
I see on your Facebook page that
you like to drink a lot, would you
say you can be classied as having
a substance abuse problem?
Most people will answer with
a no because it is a personal
question. She warns that if it
comes to light later that youre an
alcoholic or use drugs at work,
you can be dismissed because you
were dishonest in the interview. B

INSPIRATION

YOUR
PERSONAL
BOARD OF
DIRECTORS
nglish poet John Donne
penned the famous words,
No man is an island.
What he meant is that
we cannot live effectively or grow
signicantly when we are isolated
and disconnected from others. As
Africans, we do not need a quote to
convince us about the importance of
connectedness. Traditional African
societies were founded and established
on the values of Ubuntu. There is
no African who does not know that
umntu ngumntu ngabantu (a person
exists because of other people).
The question, however, is: Who
are these other people through
whom we become better versions
of ourselves? The reality is that not
everyone will help you get ahead
some people will deliberately block
you from moving forward. Therefore,
a person thrives, not just through any
people, but through a specic group
of individuals! Here is a list of ve
people who can help you develop and
become a better version of yourself:

Coach: This person helps you

to achieve specic personal or
professional goals. Coaching differs
from mentoring in that it focuses on

64

specic objectives, as opposed to

general goals or overall development.
As a masters student at the University
of the Western Cape, I had the
privilege of being coached by
Professor Winston Hide. Without
him, I would not have achieved my
academic goals. Clarify your goals,
then connect yourself to a coach
who will help you to achieve them.

Collaborator: You cannot pull

any project off the ground without
collaborating with someone.
Collaborators are people who work
with you to achieve the same goal.
If you are baking a cake, you can
bring our and milk, while others
bring eggs and sugar. Dont try to
do everything yourself; collaborate
and partner with others.

Confronter: This is someone who

is not afraid to tell you the truth,
even when you dont want to hear
it. It is dangerous to only surround
yourself with people who blindly
support you, without giving them
the permission to confront you when
you have stepped out of line!

Catcher: This is someone who takes

the baton from you when you have
nished your lap in the race. Life is not
a sprint, but a relay marathon. You
can never win alone; you must win as
a team. Thus, as you rise, make sure
that there is someone that you take
along who can run the next lap. I am
deliberate in mentoring young girls
because I understand that unless I raise
someone else my race is incomplete!

Condant: This is a trusted friend

you can talk to about personal matters.
The reality is that sometimes you will
make mistakes and get discouraged.
When such times come, you need a
reliable person to conde in, as well
as counsel and encourage you. You
dont have to stress or have high blood
pressure nd the right people to
lean on! However, be careful not to
conde in just anyone; some people
can use your weaknesses against you!

MOTIVATION

EMBRACE YOUR CONFIDENCE

Pastor George encourages women to be confident in everything they do.
owadays, women
are blessed with many
opportunities. In Africa,
as well as around the
world, women are rising to leadership
positions in government, politics,
banking and science sectors, as well
as in non-governmental organisations.
In our nation, the traditional
connement of women to cooking,
cleaning, childbearing and pleasing
their husbands is gradually decreasing.
Having said that, it is heartbreaking
to know that even in this day and age,
there are still nations where women are
owned and controlled by men. They
are not allowed to vote or drive, hold
political ofce or get an education.
Even religion is still being used as a
tool to subdue them. I once listened to
a cleric describe, with pride, how a
husband has the right to discipline
his wife, as long as he doesnt disgure
her or leave marks on her body.

RESPECT THE OPPOSITE SEX

Just as men cannot do without you,
women cannot reproduce without men.
However, you are neither inferior nor
superior to men; you are beautifully
different, and in that difference lies
your inherent value. Even though
women may not be as physically strong
as men, they are stronger in another
sense. It has been established that the
pain of childbirth can kill an average
man, yet women do it multiple times.
As a woman, you should not compete
with men; rather complement them.
OPPORTUNITIES
There are thousands of opportunities
for women to be empowered spiritually,
mentally, nancially and politically.
We live in the information age;
being ignorant is not only a choice,
but also a voluntary misfortune.

WATCH YOUR HEART

Before you give a man your heart,
passion and affection, think about
it. Whoever you choose to give
your affection to must not only
deserve it, but must also earn it.
WOMAN TO WOMAN
As women, you have come far, but
there is still a lot to be done. You are
the best people to go to when it comes
to understanding and dealing with
the challenges other women face.
Continue to speak out and ght
against injustices such as female
genital mutilation, child marriages,
as well as physical, mental and
sexual abuse the reality of many
women. You may not be able to do
much or help many, but do what
you can, even if its just offering a
listening ear or a shoulder to cry on. B

EMBRACE YOUR FEMININITY

Your femininity is not something to
apologise for. Be proud of, and
celebrate it. You play a unique role in
both the family and nation building.
Your contribution to society is
also irreplaceable. The truth is
that men cannot do without
you. Theyve sought to control
and dominate you because
they feel that if you are
empowered, they may not
be able to have you.

SPIRITUAL HEALING

HEAVENLY
HELP
Pastor George answers your questions
and provides spiritual guidance.
PASTOR GEORGE, SPIRITUAL HEALER

Dear Sindy: The Bible warns us to

stay away from every appearance of
evil (1 Thessalonians 5:22). Sin thrives
in secrecy, so take your husband to
these meetings and the inappropriate
questions will be laid to rest. Do
everything in such a way that both the
pastor and your husband will know that
you are an honourable woman. I hope
this is a misunderstanding on your part.
I am, however, concerned about you
staying in such a church, if indeed the
pastor is doing what youre saying.

SHOULD I WORK ON SUNDAYS?

God created the universe, and on the
seventh day embraced what he had
done. Ive been working from 8am

68

to 4pm, Monday to Friday. Recently,

rotating shifts were introduced, making
us work on Sundays, sometimes. As
a Christian, I nd this against my
religion; but need the money for my
family to survive. Should I refuse to
work on Sundays or continue working
though my conscience is against it?
Neo, Bloemfontein
Dear Neo: I do not believe that it is
a sin to work on Sundays. However,
many Christians do, but it is a matter
of personal opinion (Romans 14:5).
Gods Sabbath has nothing to do
with religion, but rest for your body,
refreshing your soul and fellowship
of your spirit with the Creator.
Therefore, keep that job until you get
a better one that offers you Sundays
off. Meanwhile, try to attend church
as often as you can (for example,
Sunday evenings and weekdays).

Dear Joshua: Jesus paid the price

for all your sins, even before you
committed them. God forgives you the
moment you ask Him to (1 John 1:9;
Isaiah 1:18). So, if you truly repented,
youre no longer bound by your sins.
You can stop worrying because your
sins will not be held against you. In
fact, God does not remember them
anymore (Romans 4:78, Hebrews
8:12). Though you are in prison, you
are free in Jesus Christ. In fact, youre
more free than many people walking
the streets (1 Corinthians 7:22). Spend
your time developing yourself (by
studying), serving and loving others.
Let everyone around you see the light
of Christ in you (Matthew 5:16).

successfully running businesses

Starting a business, and running it successfully, comes with many challenges. Nare Kekana
speaks to four businesswomen about their journey, and how they made their fortune.
NOBUHLE MAZOLO NCUBE
CEO and principal of Equilibrium Legal
and Equilibrium Consulting

HOW IT STARTED
Im a lawyer by profession. I started my law company
after working as a consultant at KPMG for six years. It
focuses on commercial law and business advisory.
GROWING THE BUSINESS
I started my business at home, with my laptop and cellphone.
We are now technically a complement of seven people.
I am in charge of all the strategies, decision-making and
new business. Some of my rst clients were people I had
relationships with. So, nding clients was never a problem.
The challenge was getting people to understand the value
of what I had to offer. Being a small entity, it took a while
for me to start putting up my charge-out rates, and building
a good foundation of strong connections. As a result,
every deal that walks through our door is through these
relationships. My biggest fat cheque came through referrals.

ACHIEVEMENTS
For me, an award and
recognition equate to every time
I am invited to speak, inspire and
motivate other women. Being able
to share my experiences to empower others is an
achievement. However, my biggest achievement
in life thus far, is becoming a mother.

FAMILY
My line of work requires a good family support structure and
strong team members. You can never take
that for granted. When I wake up,
I dont say I am going to work; I say I am going to live my
purpose because it is part of my DNA, and it doesnt feel like a
chore. So, balancing everything comes easy.

FELICIA BUTHELEZI
CEO of Fisokuhle Media

HOW IT STARTED
I started Fisokuhle Media in 2009,
after being in facilities management for
seven years. The facilities management
business was to set a foundation into
other businesses that I wanted to
venture into, at a later stage. Fisokuhle
Media publishes the I Do magazine,
that is aimed at encouraging and
inspiring married couples. It also
hosts the annual I Do Awards.
GROWING THE BUSINESS
I associated myself with successful
businesswomen in Johannesburg. I
then identied opportunities back
home in Richards Bay. It was difcult
to convince people that a black
woman could deliver; I even had
employees who couldnt process being
employed by a young black woman.
FAMILY
Nothing prepared me for the transition
from being single to being a wife and
mother. It took a while to restructure
my life. But, I love the structure of a
family; its important to me. I prioritise
important things my time with
God, me time and family time.

ACHIEVEMENTS
My biggest achievement is not allowing
my past circumstances to dene
me. After losing my mother at 16,
I navigated through life as a teenager
to become the woman I am today. I
have lost count of the awards I have
won, but I am fullled in knowing
that I am doing something I love, and
that it improves the lives of others.

Governance and Compliance Metako Projects

HOW IT STARTED
I started Metako Projects with my husband,
Tshepo, 12 years ago. We were providing
architectural services. A few years after we
started, we identied an opportunity in building
constructions and designs as there werent a
lot of contractors in the market at the time.
That is how we broke into the market.
GROWING THE BUSINESS
Although we started with just a few employees, we
now have eight in the ofce, and between 18 and
22 at each of our three sites. There are different
teams that get involved at different phases of the
construction, so the numbers differ according
to the project. Im responsible for compliance,
governance and business development. I ensure
that we are registered professionally, have relevant
memberships with professional councils and
bodies, and do regulations. There is a lot one
can achieve if they dont undervalue themselves.
One of the benets of running a business is
the channel it provides to exploit your abilities
and work on their untapped talents. Initially,
our biggest challenge was money; we had to
fund our business and use our savings to keep
it going. Another challenge was getting access
to markets and putting our business out there.
FAMILY
I can create exibility between work and family.
I have a good support structure, and that helps
when it comes to motherhood. Because my family
is important to me, I manage my time wisely.

ACHIEVEMENTS
One of our biggest achievements is
our recent certication with ISO 9001 the quality
management standard for businesses. That is a big
deal in our line of business. We have worked hard
towards achieving it, and Im proud. Following
this, we doubled our revenue. There arent a lot
of ISO-certied companies in our line of business.
We have now moved to our new ofces, and
this makes business operations even better.

DR NONDUMISO MZIZANA
Founder and CEO of Sikelela Medical and Biological
Pharmaceuticals, and chair of Entrepreneurial Success Summit

HOW IT STARTED
I was a dentist and lecturer, but quit to start Sikelela. It is currently
the only black, female-owned company that is fully developed
within the pharmaceutical sector. We supply medical and
dental equipment, pharmaceuticals and consumables.
GROWING THE BUSINESS
I started with only two people, but
now the company hires 35 employees.
When starting out, my biggest challenge was nancing, and the
exploitation by some large corporates that use black females
to get contracts. This defeats the purpose of empowerment and
transformation. Through resilience, I overcame such setbacks. When
Im presented with difcult situations concerning clients, I never
argue. I listen, let the customer vent while showing that I care.
FAMILY
My family comes rst. Holidays with them are not a treat, but
a must. I dont take bookings during school holidays, and
I dont take business calls after 5pm.
ACHIEVEMENTS
I won the Business Womens Association Businesswoman
of the year in 2011, and was recognised as South Africas
most inuential woman by the Financial Mail, among others.
However, the one achievement I cherish the most is being able
to give back through the Entrepreneurial Success Summit,
where I work on empowering the youth, especially women.
That is my greatest achievement; living life with a purpose. B

ELECTIONS 2016
All you need to know about our local government elections.
By Franoise Gallet

WHY VOTE?
Thirty years ago, the colour of your
skin determined which jobs and
resources you could access. That is why
voting and actively participating in a
democracy is important, says Joleen
Steyn Kotze, an associate professor
of political studies at Nelson Mandela
Metropolitan University. Now we
have a choice of political parties
and their action plans for our lives,
and we need to protect our inherent

right to make choices, regardless

of our identity or social class.
WHATS AT STAKE?
So, how does voting in municipal
as well as national and provincial
elections protect your rights? National
and provincial government look to,
among others, improve the quality of
basic education, provide efcient health
services, ensure the safety of citizens,
encourage economic growth and job
creation, and work for a better South
Africa, explains Dr Nomsa Masuku,
deputy chief electoral ofcer at the
Independent Electoral Commission
(IEC). In national and provincial
elections, you vote for a political
party, with a particular action plan, to
determine the direction of the country,
explains Prof Joleen. National and

provincial elections are, therefore, all

about broad action plans. According to
Dr Nomsa, at the heart of a municipal
election is basic service delivery
the delivery of services that have a
direct and immediate effect on your
quality of life. Municipalities must
ensure that people in their areas have
basic services such as water supply,
sewage collection and disposal,
refuse removal, electricity and gas
supply, municipal health services,
municipal roads and storm water
drainage, street lights, parks and
recreation areas, she explains.
MAKE YOUR VOTE COUNT
When voting in municipal elections,
you elect representatives to your
municipal council through a mixed
electoral system. This means that on

Picture iStock

his year, we yet again

exercise our right to vote
in this months municipal
elections. But, our history of
voting turnout shows that South Africans
tend to take national and provincial
elections more seriously than municipal
polls. So, what is at stake this year?

BONA INVESTIGATES
one of your ballot papers, you vote for
an individual candidate to represent
the interests of your area. (In municipal
elections you have up to three ballot
papers, depending on where you live.)
Given that service delivery is at stake,
the individuals performance record is
an important factor to consider. Choose
a candidate that is available to the
people, has a good understanding
of the key issues in your area, and
can seek to inuence the communitys
interest within the broader municipal
structures, suggests Prof Joleen.
The other members of your
municipal council are then elected by a
proportional representation system (PR).
This means on another ballot paper, you
also have an option to vote for a political
party. And, when casting your vote for
a party, youre asking it to nominate
PR councillors to the municipal council,
who will make choices on your behalf
about how services are delivered.
This electoral system means that you
have the right to vote for an individual
whom you believe can drive service
delivery and inuence the party policy
of your municipal council. Additionally,
the PR system means your council will
be made up of a mix of well-supported
parties, as well as those that won less
support. This is essential to ensure that
no one party is ever too powerful.
ALWAYS VOTE
One way of thinking about your right
to vote is that you can vote for a party

whose action plan you best believe

in. Or, if youre feeling politically
dissatised, you can vote purely in the
interests of democracy, by choosing
an opposition party that you believe
has a reputation for playing watch
dog and representing interests that
may otherwise be overlooked.
But, if you withdraw from the
voting process, parties may be in
a position to implement policies,
good or bad, without necessarily
being held accountable by the
people, explains Prof Joleen.
WHO CAN VOTE?
To cast your ballot on the election day,
you have to be a South African citizen,
18 years old or older, and registered
on the National Common Voters Roll.
This is an essential part of ensuring
free and fair elections, because
each voting station receives only the
section of national voters roll for that
particular district. This means theres
only one place that each citizen can
cast their vote. But, this also means
that theres a cut-off time to register.
The voters roll for these upcoming
municipal elections closed on 23
May at 5pm. Once the election is
proclaimed, the voters roll for that
election closes at 5pm on that day.
Once on the voters roll, it is also
your responsibility to ensure that you
remain there. If you have moved or
your voting district boundaries have
changed, you may have to re-register.

To check if you are on the voters

roll, send an SMS with your ID
number to 32810 (R1 per SMS).
The response will give you the
name of your voting station.
WHAT IS A SPECIAL VOTE?
If you cannot visit your voting station
on election day, because youre
away from home, ill, disabled or
pregnant, you can apply to vote
at your nearest station or receive
a home visit, says Dr Nomsa.
Applications for special votes open
from 10 June to 08 July at 5pm.
WHAT ARE YOUR RIGHTS?
All voters must be registered, and
have a green barcoded ID book,
smart ID card or a valid Temporary
Identity Certicate to cast their ballot.
And when doing so, voters have
two fundamental rights to vote
for the party and candidate of their
choice, and to do so in secret.
PROTECT YOUR RIGHTS
The IEC is a permanent body created
by the Constitution to manage free
and fair elections. So, if you feel
that your voting rights have been
infringed or compromised, you
have a right to lay a complaint with
the presiding ofcer at your voting
station. And, if you still feel that the
matter hasnt been satisfactorily
resolved, you can escalate it to
the National Ofce of the IEC. B

LABOUR OF LOVE
Juggling a full-time job and
exclusively breastfeeding your
child is possible. But, you need
to know your rights and plan
ahead. By Lungile Khumalo

DID YOU KNOW?

A dietitian or lactation consultant
can help you calculate the milk you
need to express at work, to assure
you that your child is getting enough.
Breastfeeding is also benecial to
the mother. According to a recent
Lancet Breastfeeding Series, it
is estimated that there could be
20 000 less cases of breast cancer
per year if feeding rates were
increased. There would also be
less cases of ovarian cancer.

your child could become infected

with HIV, says Anna Coutsoudis,
professor in the Department of
Paediatrics and Child Health at
the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
This is by far the best option for
HIV-positive mothers, Anna adds.
For both HIV-positive and negative
mothers, breast milk is the best form
of nutrition for a child. It provides
nutrients that build a strong, healthy
body, and contains antibodies to
help protect children against common
illnesses. Breast milk offers a child
the best possible start in life.
But, for many mothers living with
HIV who want to give their children
the best chance of survival, there
is one major hurdle standing in
the way. Maternity leave, in most
cases, only takes four months.
So, how can a mother go
back to work and exclusively
breastfeed for a year?

WHAT THE LAW SAYS

According to the Code of Good
Practice on the Protection of Employees
during Pregnancy and after the Birth of
a Child, in South Africa, arrangements
should be made for employees who
are breastfeeding to have a 30-minute
break twice a day, to breastfeed or
express milk each working day for the
rst six months of their childs life.
OVERCOMING OBSTACLES
But, with the law siding with mothers,
why do a lot of women feel that
they do not have the right to take
breastfeeding breaks at work? Why do
they sometimes even feel pressurised
into resigning so that they can make
their childs health a priority?
There are many obstacles facing
mothers. For instance, many are
not even aware that they have a
right to take breastfeeding breaks.

ith 1 to 7 August being

World Breastfeeding
Week, there are
a few things you
need to know in order to give your
child the best and healthiest start in
life, while you continue working.
Exclusive breastfeeding feeding
your child breast milk only for the
rst six months drastically reduces
the risk of HIV transmission from
mother to child. It is for this reason
that the World Health Organisation
and United Nation Childrens Fund
strongly recommend that HIV-positive
mothers exclusively breastfeed
their children for up to six months.
They should continue breastfeeding
until 12 months, providing that
they continue taking their ARVs.
When you breastfeed exclusively,
and both you and the baby are on
recommended ARV medication,
there is only a 2% to 3% chance that

POSITIVE LIVING
In some companies, the fact that
these breaks are legal is not
even common knowledge. Often,
a company does not have the
right facilities for a mother to feel
comfortable expressing milk.
So, what is the answer? Ideally,
before starting maternity leave, you
should discuss your wish to continue
breastfeeding when you return to
work with your boss or HR manager,
and make the arrangement of a
private space, says Penny Reimers,
a lactation consultant from Durban.
This has the full backing of health
minister Aaron Motsoaledi, who,
together with Normalise Breastfeeding
Campaign, is working to strengthen
legislation in the workplace to
support breastfeeding mothers.
Going forward, companies
should be encouraged to develop
breastfeeding policies that all
employees are aware of.
RETURNING TO WORK
WHILE BREASTFEEDING
Catherine Day, lactation consultant
and spokesperson for the Association
for Dietetics in South Africa,
shares tips on how you can still
provide your child with breast
milk and be a working mother.
A MONTH BEFORE:
Consider if you will be working
part-time or full-time. Will there
be a designated area for you to
express milk at your workplace?

Find a caregiver to support

your breastfeeding goals.
This allows you the peace of
mind when you are at work.
Learn to express milk by hand.
Even if you intend on using a
breast pump, you should know
how to express by hand in case
of emergencies if you forget your
pump at home or it does not work.
Invest in a breast pump that suits
your needs. Get the right advice
when buying it, as different pumps
are required depending on the
number of hours you work.
Start building up a supply of
expressed milk at least four weeks
before you return to work. Practise
to express milk, and start storing it.
Discuss how long your breast
milk can be stored in the
fridge with a dietician.
BACK AT WORK:
Know your rights.
Find a comfortable area to
express; an area where you
can relax and have privacy.
Learn to encourage milk ow.
Maximise the milk you express by
managing your stress levels. Stress
can inhibit milk release, slowing
down the ow. Be comfortable,
relax with a cup of tea, and trigger
your milk release by thinking of
your child or watching a video
of them. Applying a warm
compress or gently massaging
your breasts can also help.

Decide where you want to store your

milk; should you use the fridge at
work, label your containers properly.
A cooler bag also works well.
PRACTICAL TIPS
Breastfeed before leaving
for work in the morning.
Breastfeed when you arrive home.
For children older than six months,
ensure that the caregiver doesnt
give your child a big meal just
before you arrive back home. A
small healthy snack should be
ample, and ensures that your child
is ready to feed when you arrive.
HOW CAN WE INCREASE
WOMEN'S RIGHTS TO
BREASTFEED AT WORK?
The bottom line is be educated,
informed and know your rights,
especially when you are HIV
positive and your childs health
is at stake. Pointers include:
Form support groups to educate
and inform mothers about
breastfeeding and their
rights in the workplace.
Ask mothers who successfully
breastfed their children while
working, to share their experiences.
Arrange meetings with HR and
shop stewards regarding the
importance of breastfeeding. Outline
productivity benets to the company.
Organise to have clean, accessible,
safe and private spaces to
breastfeed and express milk. B

HIV ADVICE

DEAR DR SINDI
Do you have HIV or Aids-related questions?
Feeling lonely or confused? Dont despair!
Dr Sindi answers your questions.
ABOUT DR SINDI
Dr Sindisiwe van Zyl is an HIV clinician and a patients rights activist.
She regularly offers advice on her Twitter page. Follow her @DocSindi

Dear Anonymous: Your partner has

to start taking antiretroviral treatment. It
will lower her viral load the number
of HIV copies in her blood. This is
because the lower the load, the smaller
the risk of transmitting HIV to the baby
during pregnancy, labour, delivery and
breastfeeding. An undetectable load
also means that the risk of you getting
infected is reduced. You will have
to get Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis a
two-in-one antiretroviral drug to protect
you from contracting the virus. You
and your partner will have unprotected
sexual intercourse only when she is
ovulating. The rest of the time, you
must use condoms. The best thing to
do is to consult a doctor who manages
HIV for assistance. Good luck.

WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF

OVERDOSING ON ARVS?
I have been taking ARVs for ve years,
and have recently been changed
78

to a single-pill dose. After taking the

previous four-pill dose for that long,
I feel that the one I am currently on
will not work properly. What are the
effects of overdosing on ARVs? Also,
will overdosing not kill the virus?
Anonymous, Kimberley
Dear Anonymous: Antiretroviral
treatment is taken to lower the viral
load. Treatment can be taken once
or twice a day. The most important
thing is for you to take three or more
antiretroviral drugs. The treatment
that you used to take twice a day was
made up of three ARVs. The pill that
is taken at night is also made up of
three ARVs combined into one tablet.
There is no need for you to take
this pill more than once a day.
Overdosing on the medication
will make you feel unwell. Remember
that HIV means that the virus is in
your DNA. At the moment, we have
not discovered a way to remove it from
the DNA. Medication does not kill
the virus it lowers it in your
blood, so that your immune
system can get stronger.

Dear Thembisa: When a country

decides on a treatment regimen for
HIV, two things are taken into account
the cost and side effect prole.
The Department of Health has
guidelines on the treatment of HIV,
and it has chosen affordable drugs
with the least number of side effects.
The private sector health facilities
in South Africa also use the same
drugs. There are newer drugs
available in the private sector, but
they are usually more expensive.
The department reviews the
newer drugs, and if necessary,
introduce them into the public sector
facilities. So, do not be sceptical
about the public sector supplies.
South Africa has one of the best
ARV programmes on the continent.

I am a 27-year-old man, dating a
23-year-old, HIV-positive woman. We

HEALTH HELP

DEAR
DOCTOR
Dr Dulcy offers practical advice for your
everyday health issues and questions.

I URINATE TOO MUCH

I gave birth three months ago, but still
urinate like I did when I was pregnant.
I have tried kegel exercises, but they
dont work. My GP says this is normal,
but it is embarrassing; I hate laughing
around people because I fear urinating
on myself. How can I x this problem?
Peetoo, email
Dear Peetoo: Urinary incontinence
is usually caused by problems with
muscles and nerves that help to hold or
pass urine. During pregnancy, unborn
babies push down on the bladder,
urethra (tube that you urinate from) and
pelvic oor muscles. This pressure may
weaken the pelvic oor support and
cause difculty in holding urine. Labour
and vaginal birth can weaken pelvic
oor support and damage nerves that
control the bladder even more. Most
problems with bladder control during
pregnancy and childbirth go away after
the muscles have healed, usually in six
weeks. Three months is a long time to
still be having this problem. Ask your
GP to refer you to a Gynaecologist/
Urologist to rule out any abnormality.
TOO HAIRY
Everyone in my family is hairy. Being
the only girl, this is a problem for me.
I read up on radiation as a means to
get rid of hair on my arms and legs,

80

but I cant afford it. I worry that a

hair removal cream could ruin my
skin. So, what would be the best
option for me as a young girl?
Lioun, email
Dear Lioun: Hirsutism is a condition
caused by anexcessof male sex
hormones calledandrogens,or an
increased sensitivity to androgens in
females. In most cases, this is caused
bypolycystic ovary syndrome a
health problem that can affect your
hormone levels, periods, and ovulation.
There is no cure for hirsutism, but
there are treatments to manage the
condition. There are a number of hair
removal methodsthat may help, such
as shaving, waxing or bleaching.
However, these can sometimeslead to
irritated skin or inamed hair follicles.
In some cases, taking acontraceptive
pillmay control it. Apart from the
hairiness, do you have any other
symptoms, such as oily skin, acne,
alopecia(hair loss), a receding hair
line, an enlarged clitoris or voice
changes, such as a deeper voice? Go
to a doctor and get tested to see the
cause for your high androgen levels.
IM NOT GIFTED DOWN THERE
I am 19 years old, and have never
been in a sexual relationship. This is
because when I watch porn, I realise

ENGLISH AUGUST 2016 | BONA.CO.ZA

that my penis might be small. This

affects my condence when it comes
to being sexually active. My penis
is about 10cm, and I hear that an
average size is a little over 15cm. What
can I do to extend my penis size?
Anonymous, Pretoria
Dear Anonymous: Watching
pornography to judge what the normal
size penis should be is not advisable.
Some get the roles they play based on
their giftedness. An average penis
size is8.8cmwhen flaccid, and 12.9cm
when erect. So, 10cm is above average
for a accid penis. Also, your future
partner will be more interested in how
you satisfy them in bed, rather than just
penetration. Once you are ready to
be in a relationship, discuss with your
partner what you both like; nd ways
to excite and stimulate each other. Your
size will be the least of her worries.

Thulis
Story

Skosana, a strong

has climbed the corporate ladder, is a
mom to two beautiful children and a
wife to a caring husband. Thuli is also
the daughter of an amazing mom who
has always gone above and beyond to
give her family everything they need.
McCain gave Thuli the chance to say
thank you to her mom in a unique and
special way for all the things she has
done for her. This is her story...
Strong, caring and kind are the
three words I would use to describe
my mom. She has always done
her best to make sure that I had
everything I needed. I look up to her.
Growing up on the dusty streets of
Mamelodi, things werent always easy.
My mother raised my sisters and I on

obstacle gave me a sense of purpose.

It inspired me to be better and work

hard to achieve my dreams. She always
encouraged me to go the extra mile,
continue learning and better myself
without asking for anything in return.
My mother never ceases to amaze
me; it seems everything she touches
turns to gold. This was especially true
on the day of my wedding, which I
thought was going to be a disaster. I
was broke, pregnant and had chicken
pox. I cried the whole week, but my
mom surprised me the day before
the wedding. She organised a big,
beautiful white tent for my wedding.
She wouldnt let me go inside the tent
before the wedding, and when I walked
in on the day, it felt like a dream. I
cried. The tent was beautifully draped,
and there was a pianist playing my
favourite gospel music. I was blown
away. It was one of the best days of
my life, and all because of my mom!
My mother has impacted my life
in many other ways, and sometimes I
worry that I take it for granted. Distance

This is made from red

Its colour ranges from
pale pink to maroon,

Great for sweet

WHITE SPIRIT
This is puried vinegar, mostly
made with acid and water.
It is mainly used for cooking, baking, pickling and meat
preservation. Use it to soak meat smelling bad to get rid
of the smell. It can also be used for medicinal purposes.
White spirit vinegar is easily accessible and affordable.

APPLE CIDER
Made from cider or apple juice, this
vinegar adds a tart and subtle fruity
avour to your food. Its mostly used
in salad dressing and marinades.

RICE
This is made from
fermented rice and
is slightly milder than
most vinegars. It is
mainly used in sweet
and sour dishes, as an
accompaniment for boiled
eggs and in sushi rice.

WHITE BALSAMIC
Made the same way as balsamic vinegar,
white ingredients, are, however, used. Its
ideal for grilled chicken, sh and vegetables.

BUSINESS TIPS

HOW TO COST

YOUR RECIPES

the cost of a product for each individual item, e.g. millilitres

or grams, using the purchase price. Usually, the amount
purchased is not the amount used, so you must break the
cost down further to arrive at an accurate recipe cost.
Restaurants use the term As Purchased (AP)
to determine the purchase price.
Restaurants use the term As Served (AS) to determine the price of a single serving of that item.
For example, if you buy a bag of 8 onions
for R20, your AP is R20. By dividing R20 by
8, you nd that the AS of an onion is R2.50.
If you plan to use 1 onion, then that single ingredient will cost R2.50 for your recipe.
Write your AS amount under the column Ingredient Cost. Multiply the quantity by the Ingredient Cost
in each row to nd the Recipe Cost of that item. Fill
out the recipe cost for each of your ingredients.

If youve been cooking and baking for a prot for a

while, you could have a lot of regular customers and
a good income. But, did you know there is always
room for improvement? This month, BONA Food for
Fun and Funds looks at how to cost your recipes.

Add the numbers in the Recipe Cost column together to nd

the total cost of your recipe. Calculate the cost of the recipe
per serving by dividing the total recipe cost by the number
of servings yielded. This is called the Cost Per Serving.

Assemble all your food receipts and the recipe. List the ingredients you need for your recipe on a piece of paper
or spreadsheet. Create a table as illustrated below.
Use your recipe to determine the quantity of each ingredient on
your list, and write it under the Quantity column. Break down

Now you know what each serving costs you to make. You
shouldnt charge less than this, otherwise you make a loss.
Add your prot on top of the cost per serving to come
up with the price at which you will sell your product.

MIKE TYSON
In 1991, he was arrested for the rape of 18-year-old
beauty pageant contestant Desiree Washington. The
following year, he was sentenced to six years in prison,
but released after only serving three. He engaged
in a series of comeback ghts. In 1997, he became

cartoon show called Mike Tyson Mysteries.
AMBER ROSE
The former stripper was once famous for being Kanye
Wests ex; she now has a son with rapper Wiz Khalifa.
Her claim to fame was the bad girl reputation that
she carried with pride. Over the years, Amber has
transformed from mean girl to edgy woman and
yummy mommy.

THE DIET EVERYONE TALKS ABOUT

I WAS THE BIGGER FRIEND

My name is Ashleigh. I am a young, confident successful woman,
living the life I always dreamed of.

owever, it was not always this way.

During my teen years I had issues with
my weight and I hated going out as I always
felt that I was the bigger friend, and this
led to depression. I was not comfortable with
myself and it came out in my confidence
affecting my relationship at the time as well
as with my family and friends.

BEFORE:
86.5KG

After speaking to a friend of mine and

seeing how amazing she looked after being
on The Diet Everyone Talks About I decided
to give it a try. Starting the diet I weighed
86.5kg. I now weigh 64.2kg with my ideal
weight only 2kg away.
Being on the diet has been more of a
lifestyle change than just a diet! The diet
has taught me about which foods my body
needs and wants and which foods I need to
avoid in order to be healthy.
Losing the weight has improved my health
and overall well-being. I am now more
active and feel more energetic.
I no longer suffer from depression. I am
now confident and strong. I feel like a new
person with a new lease on life.

I live by one of my
new favourite quotes:
A fit, healthy body
that is the best fashion
statement (Jess C Scott).
Living a healthy lifestyle
will not only prolong your
life but can help assist
in the prevention of life
threatening illnesses
such as stress; high
blood pressure; cancer;
diabetes; cholesterol;
stroke; heart disease and
many more.

AFTER:
64.2KG
I LOST
22.3KG

Be Fit, Be Healthy, Be
You. You only live once,
but if you do it right,
once is enough.

THE BUSINESS
OF DANCE
Jay Kayembe (29) shares how his love for dancing
opened doors for him. By Boitumelo Mmakou
I started CoreoCreatives
as a platform for dancers
to connect with clients
for performances and
corporate events. People
come to my company requesting
dancers for different events,
and I provide them.

Picture Andrea Caldwell

My love for dancing led

me to this business. I
started dancing in my teens.
I was a member of Clinch
City Entertainment, which
conceptualised a dance
competition called Masters of
Rhythm, in 2006. The crew started
the event because there was no
dance competition that catered for
hip-hop street dancers. The show aired
on VUZU in 2011. This is where I learnt
about stage directing, production and
managing events. After eight years
as a part of what has become the
biggest dance event in South Africa,
I decided to start my own company.
CoreoCreatives has afforded me
the opportunity to do something
I am passionate about. I love that
my business has given other dancers
the opportunity to be professionals
and make a living from their craft. The
platform has also given them the chance
to grow their portfolios. Its great to
see that this has brought dancers from
different studios together, and created
healthy competition among them.
2015 has been the greatest
year since the establishment of
the company. I signed up ve gigs,

including MTV Africa Music Awards

and the Miller Boomtown for the
Kendrick Lamar SA Tour. In the past
seven months, we have doubled the
number of projects and increased our
client base to include Lip Sync Battle,
Metro FM Music Awards and South
African Film Television Awards.
I studied advertising and media
at Inscape Design College.
I have marketing experience and
know how to connect with brands.
With my graphic design, media
and advertising skills, I am able
to envision how I want production
to look like at the end.
People interested in the dance
industry need to believe in
themselves. Anyone can dance
and do choreography, but you need
to understand the dynamics.
I understand the project on a
corporate level and have dance
experience. You also need the
academic knowledge; without it, I
wouldnt have this opportunity.
On top of that, you need to put in
the work it took me four years
to get to a good place with my
business. I had to be patient!
You cant do it alone. I am lucky
to have a team of amazing
dancers, and they have become
family. CoreoCreatives is not just a
working environment; it has become
home for most dancers. I am also
lucky to have Sibu Mabena as the
events coordinator and director; her
business skills help me to nd clients. B

MY TOWNSHIP

Gom0ras
bar
raiser
Hip-hop artist Thato Madonsela (34)
talks about how growing up in Alexandra,
aka Gomora, led him to becoming a
rapper. By Boitumelo Mmakou

n the hip-hop community, he is known

as L-tido. But, in the streets of Alexandra
township, North of Joburg, many call him
Thato. This separates his Alex image from
his brand and music career, which began when
he and his childhood friend Sean Pages formed
a music group called Glits Gang. Seans older
brother introduced us to hip hop. We were
inuenced by the international sound, and
soon started learning how to rap, L-tido says.

I GREW UP IN FLATS
As an only child, L-tido developed a close
relationship with other children from the ats
where he grew up. When he wasnt at school,
he was playing soccer with his friends at a
nearby eld. Although the eld was not in the
best condition, L-tido loved spending time there.

PROUD OF MY ROOTS
L-tido is proud to be from Alexandra
because of hip-hop legends, such as the
late Flabba of Skwatta Kamp, whom he
looked up to. It was only after tertiary
that I took music seriously. By then,
groups, such as Skwatta Kamp, had
already started making the local hip-hop
sound great, so I was honoured to be
supported by Flabba. He had been in the
game longer, and had more experience;
I appreciated his advice, he shares.
LIVING FOR THE DREAM
After completing his marketing degree,
L-tido worked in the corporate world for
a few years. However, he decided to
put his career in marketing on hold, and
focus on music. In 2009, he released,
marketed and distributed his mix-tape City
of Gold. It was followed by albums All or
Nothing in 2011, and All of Me in 2013.
He makes reference to his personal
circumstances and his background.
While many may think that giving up
a corporate job to be a rapper is not
a good idea, it turned out fruitful for
L-tido. He scored nominations at
music awards ceremonies, and Best
Newcomer in Africa Award at the
2010 Channel O Music Video Awards.
THE RISE OF HOOD TALENT
Although South African hip-hop has grown
over the years, L-tido is not happy about
the lack of representation from Alexandra.
A lot of rappers with real talent in this
hood need to work harder, and get
noticed. I had to push to be where I
am today, because nothing ever gets
done for you. They need to make things
happen for themselves, he concludes. B

L-tido spent many afternoons playing

soccer on this dusty eld behind the
historic Alexandra mens hostel.

He often goes to this

restaurant, famously
known as Wandas, for the
tastiest kota in Gomora.

He has fond
memories of
growing up at
these ats.
