SCOPE AND FILED OF APPLICATION

The purpose of this standard is to:
-

suggest a classification of the compact vulcanized rubber compounds and to associate it a symbol,

define the required limit properties, for each compound, according to its use,

indicate the properties or the conditions of use, specially for certain compounds,

This standard is exclusively applied to the compact vulcanized rubber based products, that are found in the
form of plates, bands, angles, moulded parts (casting), etc.
It does not apply to cellular flexible products, which shall comply with the requirements of Standard 03-10-102
"Cellular flexible products - Classification, properties, symbol" and to thermoplastic rubbers, which shall comply
with the requirements of Standard 03-10-104 "Thermoplastic rubbers - Classification, properties, symbol"
This Standard does not cover the clauses concerning the approval, delivery and inspection of the parts. Refer to
the Product Specifications 30-00-001 "Technical elements and rubber parts approval procedures".
2.

CLASSIFICATION
2.1.

PRINCIPLE

The classification of the rubber compounds is performed on the basis of the criteria by considering their
physical-chemical properties.
The compounds are classified in categories according to their use and/or to the type of elastomer specified in
their composition.
Each category is sub-divided in the classes defined by the IRHD hardness and the rupture resistance in tension
Rr of the compound.
The category and the class define the compound "type".
Each type of compound must meet all limit characteristics, ensuring its correct use.
The compounds of the same type can be differentiated by special properties which are represented by the
symbols added to the classification.

SYMBOL

The symbols to designate a compound, associated to its classification, consist of groups of figures and letters
placed in the following order:
1. Category symbol:

1 figure. (ref. 2.3.1.)

2. Class symbol :

3 figures. (ref. 2.3.2.)

1st figure
2nd and 3rd figure

:
:

IRHD hardness number,

rupture strength index Rr.

3. Symbols of special characteristics (ref. 2.3.3.):

Each symbol, of a special characteristic, consists of a capital letter followed by a numerical index
The letter designates the special characteristic; the numerical index indicates the required degree of this
characteristic (test conditions and required limit values).
Some special characteristics do not have their own symbol. They are symbolized by the letter "Z" placed at the
end of the complete designation. This letter refers to a "Note" on the drawing

For information, the categories are determined on the basis of the following criteria:
-

Swelling in oil no. 3(1), according to Test Method D47 1098.

Resistance to ozone, according to Test Method D47 1100.

Resistance to oil no. 1(1), 7 days at 150 C, according to Test Method D47 1098.

The table below gives the limits of these criteria and the types of elastomers forming the compounds of each of
the categories.

Classes

The classification of the compounds within categories depends on their IRHD hardness measured according to
their rupture strength (Rr).

Required limit characteristics

For each type of compound, defined by its category and class, a set of characteristics, such as elongation at
rupture (Ar), compression set (DRC), tear strength (Rd), variation after ageing, ozone resistance etc., is
required.
The required limit characteristics for each type of compound are grouped by the categories in the table Limit
characteristic of the compound on pages 9 to 14

Special characteristics

The compounds of a given type can be differentiated by their special characteristics; which are represented by
a symbol formed by a letter followed by a numerical index.
The letter designates the special characteristic; the numerical index indicates the required degree of this
characteristic (test conditions and required limit values).
The meaning of the letters is given in the following table.
The degrees of requirement, which are associated to each special characteristic, are specified in the table of
Special characteristic symbol grouped in pages 15 to 17 for all the categories.

LETTER

SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS

Resistance to dry heat

Permanent set on compression

Resistance to ozone

Resistance to fluids

Resistance to tearing

Resistance to light

Tendency to staining on paints

Tendency to staining on plastic sheets

Tendency to crystallize

Resistance to cold - Rigidification 10

Special use characteristics stated in a "Note" on the part

drawing

Note:
Symbol Z implies that the compound has a special property to its use which does not appear in the table below
or the degree of requirement of which is not listed in the table Special characteristic symbols.
The symbol Z can also indicate a restriction to a degree of requirement of a required limit characteristic for a
type of compound. This restriction must be strictly compliant with the use made by this compound.
If only one characteristic is marked by the symbol Z, the latter does not include numerical index. If several
characteristics are marked by the symbol Z, the latter is followed by an increasing numerical index: Z1, Z2, etc.
The "Note" to which symbol Z refers shall state:
-

the characteristics concerned,

the test conditions,

the test method(s) to be used (or when appropriate the reference of a Specification),

the requirement on the test result.

The elastomer type (EPDM) provides information on the category of the compound: 2
The characteristics 1 and 2 provide the information for the class of the compound: 7 10.
The category and class of the compound are of type: 2 7 10
The characteristics 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 are in compliance with the fixed limit characteristics for the
compounds of type 2, 7, 10 (ref. table p10).
In addition, the characteristics 4 and 7 meet the degrees of requirements listed in the table Special
characteristic symbols adding the symbols B1 and C2 in the classification of the compound (ref. table p15).
However, the characteristic 8 does not correspond to any degree of requirement retained for the resistance to
dry heat of the Special characteristics symbols table, a symbol Z is added to the classification of the
compound which is described as:
2 7 10 B1 C2 Z
note: Z = resistance to dry heat for 1 hour at 180 C (according to M.E. D47 1053) where
