A. DESCRIPTION
Physical fitness development will be an underlying focus throughout the year.
In addition, individualized grade level units will expose students to various
physical activities. Daily lessons will aim to provide all students with maximum
activity time, while equipping them with the basic skills needed to participate
in and enjoy each activity.
B. ORGANIZATION
All students will be scheduled for a semester of Physical Education including a
fitness component.
C. COURSE OBJECTIVES
1. To introduce students to physical fitness components and various
physical activities
2. To orient students with achieving personal fitness goals, as well
participation in various forms of physical activity
3. To provide students with opportunities to develop their cardiovascular
and muscle endurance/strength levels as well as the particular skills
needed to enjoy various physical activities
D. COURSE STANDARDS
The course will cover the following National standards:
The physically literate individual
1. Demonstrates competency in a variety of motor skills and movement
patterns
2. Applies knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics related
to movement and performance
3. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a
health-enhancing level of physical fitness.
4. Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and
others
5. Recognizes the values of physical activity for health, enjoyment,
challenge, self expression and/or social interaction

E. REQUIRED SUPPLIES
Clean, Middle School-issued, PE uniform (shirt, shorts, socks and athletic
shoes) for each class.
o First name and last initial will be clearly printed on the upper left
chest of their shirt and on the inside back waste band/tag of their
shorts with a permanent marker.
Clean PE shirt or rash guard and their PE shorts or swimming bottoms for
each fitness class. Slippers/Crocs are acceptable footwear to/from the
pool.
Shower items (shampoo, body cloth, and soap).
Clean towel for every class, in order to dry-off after showering.
Combination lock (no key locks). Students will be required to secure
their unattended locker with their combination lock at all times.
o Provide the locks combination code to your teacher before placing
it on a locker.

(8 Grade) Shower caps to wear under helmets.
F. GRADING PLAN
Students will be evaluated throughout each unit/activity according to the
SHAPE America grade level outcome rubric. Grades will be determined
based on a combination of the components listed below:
Performance tasks: Students will perform quantitative or qualitative tasks
to display their proficiency of a given benchmark.
Cognitive assessments: Students will display their cognitive understanding
of a given benchmark through reflections, personal goal setting, written
assignments and other forms of communication.
Participation points: Refer to Attendance and Participation below.
Students PE and Fitness assessments will be combined in order to
determine their final quarter grade.
G. ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION
All students are required to participate during PE and Fitness classes.
1. Students will be awarded participation points according to standard
S3.M3 (Engages in Physical Activity), which will be counted towards their
grade.
2. If a student is unable to participate, he/she must have a parent/guardian
call in to Mr. Sakuma/Mrs. Sakugawa that morning in order to be excused.
In case of a voice message, please state the childs physical limitations
and how long he/she is expected to be out, as well as a call back number.
Procedurally, students without a prior call will be sent to the Health
Office.
H. GENERAL:
Grades will be posted on online-KS Connect every two weeks. Please check
your grades often and communicate any concerns or discrepancies with the
teacher immediately.

Progress reports may be sent home at mid-quarter for students receiving a


grade at or below a C-. A parent signature is required on all reports sent
home.
