Electrostatic and Electricity is at the heart of the JEE Physics syllabus.

The question for this topic is always

there in JEE question paper, and yes they are solvable. If you are clear in concept and you have enough
practice in solving questions, then you can also solve questions on the topic of electrostatic and electricity.
Here are some ways which will help you to get hold on the topic:
1. In these types of topic reading theory is not much helpful. Proficiency in this topic can only be achieved by
solving as much questions as you can. Just read theory from some good book and start attacking the problem.
2. In electrostatic there are some formulae involved and some direct result, you have to remember. So make a
chart of formulae and keep revisiting them to memorize them.
3. Concept in electrostatic is related to that in gravitation. So understanding one will eventually lead to
understanding the other. They are analogues like gravitational force is analogues to electrostatic force. Graphs
of fields are also analogues to each other.
4. In electricity application of Kirchhoffs loop laws is important. Solve the question on loop laws from basic to
JEE level.
6. Question of heat loss from resistors and charge on plane parallel plates, concentric spherical shell, charging
and discharging of capacitors are of great interest to JEE, so dont neglect this part of the topic.
There are some common mistake some people make in solving questions on the electrostatic and electricity.
You need to be careful while solving question to avoid negative marking
1. Not concerning about the sign of charge and getting the negative answer or opposite direction of electric
field.
2. Pay attention on the direction of current in a circuit, polarities of battery and capacitors to avoid negative
marking.

Geometrical Optics
Geometrical optics is an important topic in physics, which carries much weighted in JEE main and advanced
both. It's a fairly important topic from the board examination point of view too, and thus, remains as a prime
concern for any aspirant who wishes to clear JEE. Some of the essential tips for performing well in geometrical
optics are mentioned below1) Imagination is very important to understand the concepts fully in geometrical optics. It is very necessary to
create a mental picture of the problem and try to physically approximate what should the answer be. Try to
verify your actual result with the estimated one a couple of times and you will be predicting the answer
accurately enough. Also, the experiments done in school labs are simple enough and can be really helpful in
developing the understanding.
2) Pay close attention to the minute details and take sufficient time to comprehend various little concepts like
the sign convention as even a little mistake in one part can lead to a completely different answer which would
be totally wrong. Dont rely completely on the teacher to make you understand how signs are taken for various
distances. Devise your own method and develop your own concepts according to which you will work.

3) Not much variety is available and questions formed are nearly the same every time. Still, search for different
types of questions in various books and in the study material of different institutes and practice the questions
about relevant difficulty level. However, care must be taken to avoid wastage of time on the questions which
are very different and have no chance to appear in the JEE paper. Also, not much time should be taken for
solving he questions.
4) Concentrate on increasing the speed and accuracy by practicing a large amount of questions and do not try
to wander off too much from the standard path.
Keeping these points in mind, start working hard towards your goal and I am sure that you will not face any
problem in achieving proficiency in geometrical optics.

Wave Optics
Wave optics is one of the easiest topics that you will encounter in the JEE syllabus in Physics. Although it wont
be a problem for most of the students, but for those who find it to be difficult, it can be a nightmare as they
imagine themselves to be comparatively less intelligent than others and may lag behind due to low confidence.
Unlike others, this topic is very straightforward and involves cumbersome calculations (sometimes) to arrive at
the correct answers. You might have figured out that most of the questions coming in the JEE are based solely
on the taught algorithms and can be easily done by applying the concepts in the correct order. While the above
statement might not entirely be true for some problems, but these questions can also be cracked by using a
little common sense and intuition. Another advantage in this topic is that you can easily arrive at some answers
or overcome little problems by guesswork, which is underestimated greatly by students and teachers both.
It is not so necessary to physically understand what is happening at a lower level and rather it is easier to skip
the explanation and start forming algorithms to solve problems as the concepts seem very complicated and
difficult to visualize.
There is not much variety available in the study material for it, but the given questions should suffice easily as
the JEE usually doesnt contain much tricks in this part. Also, sometimes the questions are combined with other
topics and can prove to be difficult, but the best approach in that case is usually going for a stepwise solution
and solving the problem by breaking it up into parts.
Dont forget to mug up the formulae as nothing can be done without them. After that, there isnt much you can
do to master it and hopefully these points would be enough to guide you for approaching this topic.

Rotational Motion - A nightmare unveiled
Rotational motion is considered as one of the toughest topics in the syllabus of JEE physics. The thing is that
you cant ignore this topic because JEE has consistently asked question on this topic in the past years. Also,
its not that the questions are not solvable, if you have done enough practice then the question will look easy.
Here are some tips which will help you to solve questions based on rotational motion.
Questions can be broadly classified into the 3 categories
1. Pure rotational motion of body

2. Pure translational motion of body

3. Rotational + Translational motion of the body.
Questions can be solved by adopting the following steps
1.Understand the problem: Understanding the problem is important in mechanics. First visualize what is
happening in the question as we do with kinematics problem
2.Draw neat and clear Free Body Diagram. And clearly draw all the forces applied on the body, including
frictional and gravitational force. Also pay attention to the direction of force.
3.Finding variables: Next important step is to figure out the variables involved in the question. Compared to the
normal mechanics problem there will be more number of variables. But these new variables will be analogous
to that one in linear motion like linear displacement is analogous to angular displacement.
4.In case of both translational and linear motion, treat both of this motion separately and use the condition of
pure rolling as the equation linking both this motion (if pure rolling is specified)
5. If its pure rolling then apply the equation of conservation of energy, as there is no work done by friction. And
energy conservation will fetch you values of variables.
6.Apply linear and angular momentum at the point where you can minimize the number of variables involved in
the equation. And get the values of unknown variables.

Simple Harmonic Motion
Simple Harmonic Motion, often referred as SHM by many of JEE preparing students is one of the important
topics under waves and oscillation part of the JEE physics syllabus. Always there are question based on this
topic in JEE, and you need to get command over the topic to score good marks in JEE. Here are some ways
which may help you to get hold over the topic - Simple Harmonic Motion or in short SHM.
For this topic reading theory wont help much. Just read the concepts from any good book and then focus on
problems. In this topic JEE wont ask much calculative questions, JEE asks thought provoking question. So it is
significant to solve as many as thought provoking questions.
Question from SHM are mainly based on a single formula of the time period of oscillation. So you need to find
any of the missing variables in a formula. Here are some strategies to solve the question:
1. Firstly, identify the object which is oscillating. An object can have variable mass either decreasing or
increasing. If it is variable mass system, then write mass as a function of time and position and then proceed.
2. Next step is to identify the spring force which is responsible for the oscillation of the system. Calculating the
spring force and spring constant is a crucial step. The student often makes mistakes in this step, since they
focus on solving numerous questions on various combinations of springs, at a time. It is similar to various
combinations of resistors i.e. in series or in parallel.
3. After you have figured out mass and spring constant, simplify the system and solve the question.

Syllabus of SHM for JEE main and JEE advance is different, so before preparing the topic just have look at the
exact syllabus of SHM in JEE brochure.

Fluid Mechanics
Fluid Mechanics is one of the important topics in JEE Physics syllabus. JEE has consistently asked number of
questions for this topic, enough to make you sit and study this topic with proper attention. Fluid mechanics dont
cover most of the part of mechanics portion, but still it's important from the JEE Main and JEE Advance point of
view.
Prerequisite for learning fluid mechanics is that you must have good knowledge of basic mechanic portion. So
before going for fluid mechanics, be clear with the concept of basic mechanics.
Here are some points that you should keep in your mind while you prepare for topic fluid mechanics for the
JEE:
1. There might be some difference in the syllabus of fluid mechanics for JEE Mains and JEE Advance, so look
for the exact syllabus under the topic for both the exam before beginning your preparation.
2. For JEE main you may expect direct questions like use of Bernoulli Theorem. But for JEE Advance you must
also focus on thought provoking theoretical questions about this topic. This topic has lots of concepts and there
can be innumerable confusing theoretical questions. So be clear with the concept.
3. Solve as many thought provoking questions you can to build your basics strong for this topic. If you are not
clear with the basics, problems can easily mislead you and you may get struck with the question. In that case
you may not get the answer or you may get the wrong answer. Also, solve the previous year JEE question to
get the feel of what type of question JEE asks.
There is also a concept of surface tension under the topic fluid mechanics, which usually comes at the end and
because of it many students tend to neglect this topic. But there are questions for this topic in the JEE, so dont
neglect this part of fluid mechanics.

Modern Physics
Modern physics is a topic which is usually neglected or completed in a hurry by most of the students, as it is
generally the last topic before JEE exams . Revision of the whole syllabus needs to be completed and there is
not much time left, which results in lack of proper focus towards the topic. This article might be helpful for some
of you to improve their level in this topic.
While starting the topic, dont feel too anxious to finish it quickly. Take proper time to learn the concepts which
are being taught. The questions asked in the exam are generally tricky and require some level of understanding
to solve correctly and thus, it becomes very important to develop the problem solving abilities. Many questions
are asked from it, which increases its importance for the final examination. The best way to learn to handle new
problems is by practicing the old questions which are easily available in various books and attempting the

questions previously asked in JEE. The textbooks recommended by CBSE for 12th Class can also help greatly
in developing the concepts.
This topic also includes a large amount of data which needs to be memorized perfectly in order to avoid
confusion in the paper, so dont feel that you need to understand it only once. Revision is a must to provide
enough confidence to crack new type of questions.
However, even after posing so many difficulties in the preparation, this topic seems fairly interesting and helps
in scoring good marks once you prepare well. After understanding it, the questions dont seem too tough and
do not consume much time. Therefore, it is advisable to invest your valuable time in preparing for it and you
wont regret it afterwards.

Magnetism
Electricity is an integral part of questions on the topic Magnetism. So before starting the topic
magnetism, you must have sound knowledge of electricity. In fact JEE mostly asks integrated
question on these two topics. And there is enough weightage given to this topic in JEE as an
incentive for you to learn electricity and magnetism. Moreover, these topics are interesting and
questions from these topics are not that difficult.
The topic magnetism is broadly classified into three parts, namely earth magnetism, magnetic effect
of electric current and application of magnetism. Now lets look at them separately:
1. Earth magnetism: This topic is important only from the JEE Main point of view. So go through the
theory and make notes there are hardly any problems in this part. So just focus on the theory that
too only for JEE main.
2. The magnetic effect of electric current: This is an important part and it is there in syllabus of
both JEE Main and JEE Advance. There is not much theory to learn, just solve problems, to
understand concept from basic level to JEE level. This part includes questions from the laws of
magnetism, Flemings rule, deflection of particle in a magnetic field and charging and discharging of
the inductor.
3. Application: Now comes the last part which is an application of magnetism current. This topic
requires knowledge of Alternating Current and this is again important from the viewpoint of JEE Main
only. This part includes theory of working of electric motors, electric generator and transformers.
As the topic is important from both JEE Main and JEE Advance point of view, you cant afford to
neglect this topic. So be clear in concept and solve different types of problem, then result will be in
favor of you.
