Traditional Arts and Crafts

A burnay in the making.


This precolonial industry introduced by
Chinese settlers predates the arrival of
the Spanish conquistadores. An earlier
type called mang-ging was a major
export item to Japan for tea drinking
ceremonies. The local bagoong (fish
sauce), sugarcane vinegar and basi wine
would not taste as good if not fermented
in stoneware burnay jars. Burnay shards
are also used to produce fine grain salt.

The backyard production of terracptta
Vigan tiles, bricks, pottery, traditional
stoves and well sidings is a must-see
activity in the picturesque setting of
Bulala and neighboring barangays.

Abel Iloco
The high demand for the famous
handwoven abel Iloco nearly killed the
Spanish weaving industry during the
galleon trade era. Weavers in barangay
Mindoro still produce geometrically
patterned blankets called binakol, while
Camanggaan and other eastern barangay
have their own specialized woven
products.

MOUNTAIN PROVINCE

Kattokong Craft
A status symbol in the olden days, the
kattokong or gourd hat edged with
woven nito and fine bamboo slats
continue to be handcrafted in barangay
Bongtolan.

MT. PROVINCE: Known for it hanging coffins. Also known for Kadangyan burial cloth.
Tattoo Art is another form of folk arts in Mountain Province. Bontoc are known for their
different type of basket such as bobo and suklang. Bobo is used to catch fish from the
river. Suklang is an everyday hat used by men.

CAGAYAN VALLEY
Traditional Arts and Crafts

Cagayan Valley is Region II. It is a wide valley in the northeastern part of Luzon and
irrigated from the waters of Cagayan River.

The valley is believed to be dominated by the elephants and other animals that are
already extinct in the Philippines. The Ivatans are the people living in Batanes group of
Islands.

Most of the Ivatans are farmers and fishermen.

Vuyavuy & Vakul


The Ivatan women wears ahead gear called vakul. This special clothing is woven from
abaca fiber or the vuyavuy palm a plant similar to coconut.
NUEVA VISCAYA

The Gaddangs of Nueva Viscaya are known for their crafts and textiles.

Bakwat
Nueva Viscaya is located near Ifugao, Benguet and Quirino. Gaddang weavers are known
for their bakwat, a belt used by mothers after giving birth. This cloth, unlike of the ikat of
the Ifugaos, is usually made of white with beads as accents and patterns of rivers and
mountains with bead works on the central portion of the cloth.

BULACAN

The Historic town of Bulacan is regarded as the center of anon-making before the coming
of Spain.

Pastillas
Bulacan Arts and crafts include the singkaban, pastillas wraper, and fire crackers.

Singkaban is the local term for bamboo arches elaborately designed with kayas.

Nueva Ecija is known for its rice production. In the Tanduyong Festival, the Nueva
Ecijanos celebrate thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest each year.
