Career/Occupation # 1: Wildlife Biologist
Job Description:
Wildlife Biologists monitor and research animal/plant behaviour and habitats. They also
study genetics and life processes. They work in the field as well as in laboratories
(usually medical labs) planning and executing experiments. Wildlife Biologists work
mainly for government agencies, university research departments and private
companies.
Earnings: (wildlife biologist/zoologist)
2013 median salary: $57, 430
Top-paid ten percent: $95, 460 or more
Working Conditions:

Differ from one area of specialty to the next. Wildlife biologists could move to a certain
area and spend a long time there to study different species in the habitat. Some would
travel thousands of miles follow the path of migratory birds. A wildlife biologist may
spend the majority of their career working in a laboratory working with genetics. Others
might work in zoos or offices.
An example would be Jane Goodall, who lived in Gombe when she was first studying
chimpanzees. This is the kind of wildlife biologist Id like to be, one that travels to
monitor the behaviour and interactions of different species.
Required Education/Training:
Minimum qualification to be a wildlife biologist is a bachelors degree (in wildlife biology
or another closely related field, however many have doctorates, particularly if they are
involved in research. To be accepted for a higher position, one must have a masters
degree or Ph.D.
Essential Skills Required:
-Active listening to understand instructions and ask questions at appropriate times
-Critical thinking is needed to assess problems and possible solutions, or reasons that
something is occurring
-Cooperation to work with others and deal with problems effectively
-Dependability so others an rely on you to complete a certain task properly and on time
-Adaptability/Flexibility needed to become accustomed to changes in environment as
you travel to different places to study species
-Stress tolerance to remain calm in highly stressful situations, and accept constructive

becomes more difficult
Future Prospects:
Projected job growth from 2012-2022 for wildlife biologists and zoologists is 5%.
I think Id be right for this job because I possess most of the essential skills and the
required learning is something Id like to take further than high school in my education. I
also think that the job tasks sound interesting, and Id really love to travel to different
countries to study species and their habitats.

Career/Occupation # 2: (Cartoon) Animator


Job Description:
Cartoon animators create animated narrative scenes using artistic skill, advertising
and/or computer modeling programs. Most animators work for advertising industries or
movie making companies. Their job is to create drawings by hand or on a computer,
then use computers to create a chain of images that brings to life a character or special
effect. Some animators work with a professional team to develop animated films,
computer artwork or webpages.
Earnings:
Median Salary 2013: 64, 470

Working Conditions:
Those who work for a company will have regular office hours, sometimes longer when
deadlines are approaching. They will also spend most of their workday in their office,
and their work is diverse and challenging.
In 2012, over half of all animators were self-employed. Those who are freelance will
likely meet up with clients or promote your work, so they travel and arent always at
home.
Required Education/Training:
Most animators, to have the knowledge of computer animation programs, have taken a
bachelors degree in new media production or training in animation. Some have also
taken certificates or degree programs that combine art and new media. Others
participated in an internship, to fully develop animation skills and put together a
professional portfolio.
Essential Skills Required:
-Need to be able to work under pressure to meet deadlines
-Collaboration skills to work as a team to create a storyboard, develop a storyline,
process with cinematography and revise with editing.
-Also needs independence and self-regulation to work at a computer for a long time to
utilize computer animation tools and modeling programs.
-High attention to detail/meticulousness is necessary to create finely detailed animation
and real-looking characters
-In-depth knowledge of computers and computer programs to easily develop animation.
Future Prospects:
The projected job growth for this position is predicted to increase by 6% between 2012
and 2022.
Id like to pursue a career in cartoon animation, and I think I would be good for the
position because I love art and drawing, and I want to work in a position that has to do
with creating movies.

Career/Occupation # 3: Screen Writer


Job Description:
Work as team with directors and producers to create a script for a film or TV show. Uses
existing work or their own ideas to write stories in great detail, including characters
emotions and surrounding environment. They may also revise scripts, under the
direction of the producer and director.
Earnings:
Average Earnings 2013: $106,160
Working Conditions:
Many writers work for major filmmaking companies and work at home. They use their

computers to work on new material, and telecommute. Script/screen writers usually


work long hours and under pressure to meet deadlines. As most work at home, they
have their whole day to schedule to make sure it gets done.
Required Education/Training:
There is no required education for a script/screen writer, however a college degree is
suggested and some may have bachelors degrees or certificates in screen/script
writing. Most have previous experience in writing, as an author or editor.
They must be able to understand filmmaking, its process and its language, and create a
story with clearly expressed ideas and a compelling plot.
Essential Skills Required:
-Must be good at writing and creatively implementing different ideas
-Needs to know how to think critically and define underlying messages in writing
-Has to be persistent and determined to overcome obstacles and setbacks
-Good communication is key, as you need to get your storyline ideas across, and you
need to be able to discuss things with your team
-Job requires initiative to adopt challenging tasks and responsibilities
-Collaboration and team work so you can discuss ideas with the producer and director
-Must be able to listen to others ideas and put them to use
-Possess creativity/talent to create an interesting or captivating story
-Needs patience and self-motivation to finish the work
-Able to accept constructive criticism and use it to improve your work
Future Prospects:
The projected job growth for all types of writers and authors is 3% in the decade
between 2012 and 2022.
I think I would be a good screenwriter because I love writing captivating stories and I
have the persistence to do so. I enjoy using my creativity to come up with interesting
plot ideas, strange characters, and huge plot twists. I wouldnt mind taking English as a
major in university, and I think the position of a scriptwriter would fit me well.
