Dear Parishioners,
July 31 happens to be the feast day of St. Ignatius of Loyola,
the founder of my religious order, the Jesuits. So I was already
looking for an excuse to write about him when I discovered, to my delight, that his
spirituality casts much light on today's readings.
St. Ignatius wrote a famous manual for retreat directors, THE SPIRITUAL
EXERCISES. His instructions in that book form the basis for the two thirty day retreats
that every Jesuit makes one at the beginning and the other at the end of our training. I
made my retreats in Massachusetts in 1988 and in Australia in 2005, so our training is
both long and far-flung!
Earlier in the book there is a chapter called "The Principle and Foundation." It
points out that God grants us access too many created items in this world. However we
should only make use of these things if and as long as they draw us closer to God himself
and to the goal of eternal life with God in heaven.
Our first Reading and our Gospel point out why Ignatius wrote as he did. They
speak of the futility of treating worldly things as our ultimate destiny in life. When
death comes, none of these things can accompany us.
So how do we set our priorities properly? In the second reading St Paul shows us
how, by centering our lives around the Risen Christ whom we first meet in baptism and
who is always present to us.
St. Ignatius also helps us by an example he set. He was originally a soldier and
once considered killing a Muslim of his acquaintance whom he felt had insulted Our
Lady. Instead he decided that God wanted him to respond with respectful conversation.
today.
May we take his advice in our own conversations in this multicultural world of
And let us pray together for the most famous Jesuit in the world today------our
Holy Father, Pope Francis!
Peace. Fr. Tom
