Street Wise Program


No Youth Is Left Behind

LOCATION: Tri-Cities (Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody)


REPORTS TO: Executive Director

THE AGENCY: PoCoMo Youth Services Society is an award winning independent, community based registered charity
established in 1992. As a grass-roots organization, our mandate includes the development and delivery of innovative
programs and services for youth ages 12-18 who may be disadvantaged, marginalized, or at-risk. We create of opportunities
for youth to reach their full potential. The Society seeks youth facilitators to work in a team environment to provide Street Wise
class presentations.

MISSION STATEMENT: To provide outreach support and services to youth in our communities.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION of PROGRAM: STREETWISE is an “improvisation & discussion” based program developed in
response to the growing concern for the health and safety of our youth today, especially after-hours. The Streetwise program
team will offer real life situations/scenarios. The discussions are initiated and scenarios are developed and acted out by the
team. Students are encouraged to actively participate in discussions and improvisations. The goal is to create the opportunity
for youth to explore and develop tools and strategies in response to challenging ‘real life’ teen issues such as bullying, drug
use, gang recruitment, sexual health, and violence.

Volunteer Environment:
PT (2-3 hours a week);
Daytime (schools) hours (some evening presentations) working with a team of one Adult staff and two youth facilitators;

DUTIES: This position is specifically targeted at middle school aged youth. The facilitator will:
Work along side Adult outreach workers providing improvisation presentations to middle & secondary students;
Provide opportunity for dialogue with students about their experiences;
Provide referrals to community supports when needed;
Liaison with schools;
Provide information on street activities;
Maintain data collection;
Implement Street Wise Program;
Report to Program Coordinator or Executive Director;
Provide information on local resources and programs;

Qualifications:
17– 20 years of age
Able to relate to youth ages 12-18 on a peer basis;
Experience and/or knowledge of youth issues;
Comfortable with public speaking;
Comfortable doing improvisation & facilitating in classrooms;
Ability to work as an effective and cooperative team member;

Start Date: September 1, 2010


End Date: June 1, 2011
