Drive Method - Area Milling

Overview: The Area Mill drive method, while similar to the Boundary drive method, offers an
advantage in that it does not require boundaries. Area Milling uses the outer edges of a cut area
to contain the tool. If you do not define a cut area, the part geometry is used. You can define a
trim boundary to provide additional containment.
Options that are identical to both the Boundary and Area Milling drive methods we explain in
Drive Method Boundary.
Geometry Selection
Using the Area Milling drive method activates two additional geometry selection types: Cut
Area and Trim.
Cut Area

Use this to select faces to machine. If you do not define a cut area, then all of the accessible
part geometry is cut.
Trim

Defines a trim boundary to create a designated border around the area. This helps eliminate
cutting in undesired locations.
Area Milling Drive Method
This drive method uses faces or a surface region to determine the cut area. You can further
define the area of the cut by using the Steep Containment options.
Steep Containment
Use Steep Containment to define a cut area based on the angle of a surface to the tool axis
direction. There are three options available.
None
Use this to ignore surface angles when creating the cut area.
Non-Steep
This option activates the Steep Angle text box. This angle is measured perpendicular to the
tool axis. For example, if you enter an angle of 0, then only planar faces are cut. If you enter
an angle of 90-degrees or greater, then all the faces are cut.

This option allows you to limit the area of the cut based upon the Cut Direction and the
Steep Angle options. This option is useful when machining areas with steep walls that are
cleaned up with another operation.
Apply
This option becomes available when the Pattern is set to Follow Periphery. Two additional
Stepover options are activated. On Plane defines the Stepover projection direction as
normal to the tool axis. This is the default process used for all other drive methods. On Part
defines the Stepover projection direction as normal to the part geometry. The surface finish
should be superior to other drive options when cutting steep surfaces.
More Drive Parameters
This option displays the More Drive Parameters dialog.
Finish Pass and Corner Control.

It is here that you can activate

Cut Direction
You can choose between Climb and Conventional to control the direction of the cut.

Tips
Activate Remove Edge Traces in the Cutting Parameters dialog if you are cutting an area
and the tool rolls over a flat edge.
