Standing on the Shoulders of Giants:

A closer look at Current Giant Offshore Wind Turbine Projects

In the competition to lower the Cost of Energy, larger turbines play

a key role in accessing cost savings. Increased competition helps to
fuel technological advancements and drives the industry forward
rapidly. Multi Megawatt turbines have quickly become a standard,
but not the way they are constructed. Related challenges in
transport & installation, reliability of key components and supply
chain issues make the giant offshore wind industry a difficult
challenge in many aspects. And this is not even taking into account
the operators perspective on wind turbine selection.

Below, we have compiled some of the case study turbines that will
be presented at this years international IQPC Giant Offshore Wind
Turbines conference. Read on to find out more about current
offshore turbine projects!

Senvion 6.2M152
The Senvion Senvion 6.2M152 takes offshore
wind turbines to the next generation. With a
larger turbine and a higher yield, the 6.2M152
is their most economical turbine yet!
Being an upgrade for the 6.2M126, the turbine
has been granted a new gearbox. The updated
gearbox, rotor and machine carrier have been
so efficiently optimized that the offshore turbine
now delivers up to 20 per cent more yield at a
wind speed of 9.5 m/s.
The package is rounded by an impressive rotor
diameter of 152 meters.

Hitachis 5 MW Approach for Extreme Offshore Conditions

When Hitachi announced that they were going to
unveil their demonstration prototype of the HTW5.0126 at an onshore site in Kamisu City (Ibaraki
Prefecture), it was not clear what technology would be
implemented. With Japan planning on becoming a
carbon free society, they are well on their way with
this unique configuration developed by Hitachi in
which the rotor is located on the downwind side of the
tower. This design helps to improve safety while
reducing the cost of building foundations or floating
platforms.

Alstom Haliade 150-6MW from Prototype to Serial Production

The Haliade 150-6MW is a three-bladed upwind wind turbine
operating at variable speed with a 150m diameter rotor and a rated
power of 6MW. The turbine has been designed following Class I-B
specifications of the standards IEC-61400-1 / IEC-61400-3. It is
suitable for sites with a reference wind speed of 50m/s (10-minute
average) and a 50-year extreme gust speed of 70m/s (3-second
average). The Haliade 150-6MW is equipped with a direct-drive
permanent magnet generator and three identical full-power
converters operating at 900V. This voltage can then be increased
by means of a transformer included in the turbine making it a truly
exceptional giant among giants.

Mingyang Offshore Wind Turbine Development

When China Ming Yang Wind Power Group announced that its
super compact drive ("SCD") offshore wind turbine prototype of
6.5MW platform was ready, it truly was a day for celebration.
The state of the art giant turbine is able to be expanded and
developed to a series of wind turbine generators ("WTGs") with
capacity ranging from 5.0MW to 7.0 MW. This cutting-edge SCD
wind turbine prototype features a two-blade design with a light
weight permanent magnet generator and is able to adapt to
various extreme offshore weather conditions, offering high
reliability at a lower weight to offshore wind farm operators,
particularly in typhoon-prone regions.
