Anatomy and Physiology

Purpose:
The purpose of this class is to learn human anatomy and physiology. You will learn
about cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems and how all those things work
together. You will need to use and apply concepts from biology, physics, and
chemistry to topics in anatomy and physiology. You will also practice your
communication skills through oral, visual, and written work, and learn a lot of new
vocabulary. Students who pass this course will be prepared for introductory college
biology, nursing, personal fitness training, and pre-med courses.

Expectations:
It is expected that you have taken and passed Biology prior to enrolling in this
course. Anatomy and Physiology is an upper division class. As such, you will come
to class prepared to learn and discuss at a high level. This means you have
completed the homework and are ready to participate in a class discussion or
activity. It also means you have all necessary supplies/equipment for whatever
activity or lab we are doing that day. I update the class blog one week prior to class
to ensure you have ample time to be prepared.
I also expect you to work hard and make wise choices with regards to your behavior.
Behavior in class and in the field will be factored into your final grade via 21 st
Century Skills. An A is exemplary, and only students who truly go above and beyond
will earn such a high level score. That being said, all students who show effort on an
assignment the first time around will be allowed to remediate work. If you put the
work in, I will help you revise and achieve your goals.
Grading:
21st Century Skills = 25%
Classwork/Homework = 25%
Assessments = 50%
Assessment remediation policy You may remediate assessments. The average of
your two assessment scores will be your final grade.
Late Work Policy:
I will not accept late work.
If your work is going to be late I expect you to notify me ahead of time with an
explanation for why the work will be late and your plan for getting back on track.

Required Supplies:
The Story of the Human Body: Evolution, Health, and Disease by Daniel
Leiberman
Notebook
Pencils/Pens
Colored pencils
Index cards
Four colors of reusable modeling clay (Play Dough or similar)
Internet access at home
Dissection kit (optional for second semester)
Absence/Tardy Policy:
I expect you to attend class. Absences and tardies can greatly impede your ability to
learn and stay on track, and it is best to minimize them.
If you know you are going to be absent/tardy I expect you to notify me at least one
week in advance. If you are unexpectedly absent/tardy due to illness or other
unforeseen circumstances, I expect communication from you (Ccing your parents)
explaining your absence. Students who are chronically absent/tardy (miss or are
late to four or more classes in a quarte) will be required to meet with me and their
parents to determine why you have been chronically absent/tardy and make a plan
to prevent future absences/tardies. Students who are chronically absent/tardy and
do not meet with me will earn 0s on missed work and will not be allowed to make
the work up.
You have the same number of school days you are absent to make up missing work.
Students who chronically miss class on assessment days (miss two assessments in
a row) will not be allowed to make up assessments.
Technology Policy:
Cell phones and tablets are highly useful tools when used properly. I am happy to
allow you to use these devices as calculators, cameras, and research tools when we
are in class. However, if you misuse your device (texting, Snapchat, Facebook, offtopic websites, etc.) while in class, I will confiscate your device. The school-wide
three strikes youre out policy applies.
Cut on the line and turn in to me by August 4.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I have read the class policies. I understand the policies and agree to comply with
them.
