ENGINEERING BEYOND BORDERS 2016

EUNICE CHERYL P. ELLEAZAR

July 14-16, 2016 when De La Salle University Manila Campus held a

Summit for engineering students on Henry Sy building DLSU. It was great
experience to learn something new from different engineers and speakers
around the Philippines. I will surely apply what Ive learned to my future work.
These are the summary of what I have learned on different tracks during the
engineering summit.
Track 1: The Ubiquity of the Internet: Tapping into the Rural
Population Market
by Engr. Gio Abaquin
The topic is about the Internet continues to change up ways of life and
doing business. The internet is evolving as the global brain. It is expanding our
identities so we can become global citizens. During the talk of Engr. Abaquin, he
differentiate the difference of technology from year 1991 up to present and the
technology today has a big impact to citizens all over the world. He stated that
63% of the worlds population is invaded by the technology.
With the ubiquity of the Internet, we are almost constantly connected to
large amounts of information. And when that data is within reach, people seem
less likely to rely on their own knowledge, they speculated that access to the
Internet might make it less acceptable to say you know something but are
incorrect.
Track 2: Just a Call Away: Exploring Cheaper Alternatives for Cellular
Connectivity
by Engr. Gerhard Tan
In this track Ive learned how to drop your data plan and keep using your
smartphone. This isnt about dropping smartphones or nostalgically longing for a
pre-cellphone era or an uncontaminated, unplugged, In Real Life. Its about
using smartphones in smarter ways, exploring their amazing potential while
limiting their cost, insensitivity, addictiveness, and other problems. Its about
making our tools serve our goals, rather than accepting, as Marshall McLuhan
said, that First we build the tools, then they build us.
Engr. Tan showed us the Typical Cellular Site its composed of Antennas,
Microwave link, tower, Transmission line and Fiber optic cable. He explained it
very well and it gives me a clear definition and function of those instruments
that produce our internet access.
Track 3: Life and Communication: Innovation and Internet of things
By Engr. Felicito Caluyo
This talk is about creativity and innovation. What does it make to be a
good engineer? Engr Caluyo stated that not only the brain must be use but also

the attitude that makes you an excellent engineer. Nothing is more important
than a good attitude in getting the young engineer off on the right foot on any
job and especially his first one. The main characteristics are being creative and
innovative but the most important characteristic of a good attitude is a real
desire to get a job done. Also positive thinking is a very strong asset for a young
engineer. Engr. Caluyo said that young engineers are better trained
academically than ever before but do not forget to apply good attitude that
makes you an excellent engineer.
