GOOD FOR LUNCH & DINNER

Letter to the Editor

I recently drove over the Stillwater River and noticed how low it was. I swam in that river when I was
a teenager, when the water was five to six feet deep. Now you can walk across it in knee boots.
The rumor going around is theyre going to remove the dams from the Stillwater River in Miami
County. I hope they have plans to rebuild those dams and make them larger to hold more water. We need
every gallon we can get.
Summer is well underway, when more water is needed. Please use your water sparingly.
I was in a grocery store the other day and they had one side of an aisle with nothing but water in all
sizes of containers. As I was leaving the store, I saw a lady with her cart full of bottles of water. We never
saw this bottled water thing 15 years ago.
Every living thing on this earth needs water to survive people, animals, trees, grass, and crops of all
kinds. Even some machinery. I read in a book that people can only live four days without water.
We have to start thinking about how we can save on our water consumption. Little things like not letting the water run all the while youre shaving or brushing your teeth. If youre using a garden hose to
water your flowers or wash your car, get a hose nozzle that enables you to turn the water on and off, not
just lay down the hose and let the water run. The next time you take a bath, remember that taking a shower instead uses only 5-7 gallons of water rather than the 15-20 gallons it takes to fill up the tub. The
kitchen is another great place to save water.
If you have a well, using less water not only saves the water, but the pump will not run as much and
youll save on your electric bill. If you live in town and buy your water, youll be saving on your water
bill by using less water and sewage. Your sewage bill is figured by how much water you use.
Yes, we have water for now. But think about our grandchildren in 30-40 years. What about their water
supply?

Clinton Cash Movie Is An Eye Opener

Im assuming that most of my readers know that in my younger years, I was Mayor of the
village of Bradford for two and a half years. During that time, and even today, I have a
passion for politics. In November we will have a choice of Hillary Clinton or Donald
Trump for the next President of the United States.
Its pretty sad, that these are the choices for President. For most of my life, Ive been a registered Republican. To say that Im conservative would be an under statement. Just ask
Ginger.
I dont support either of the candidates. But, until I get into the booth, I dont know which
lever Ill pull. My instincts tell me to go Independent.
However, the stakes are too high. I try to do my own research, and Im glad for the
Internet. Today, I saw a headline that stopped me in my tracks. Clinton Cash Movie
Surpasses 500,000 Views In 48 Hours.
If you havent heard of Breitbart.com now is the time to dial in. Breitbart is one of the
fastest growing news media on the net. Im asking everyone who reads this column to go
the Breitbart.com and watch the movie for FREE.
Theres been a lot said of the Clintons Foundation, but this movie details everything and
everybody. Did you know that the foundation uses only 10 percent of the billions of dollars taken in to do charity work?
Weve all heard the saying, its who you know that counts.
President Clinton was paid 1.4 million dollars for two speeches in Nigeria. His normal fee
is $200,000. Can you taste a little greed in this arrangement? How about this: Marc Rich
was on the most wanted list for performing money deals. He was pardoned by Bill
Clinton.
Why would over seas leaders pledge 100 million dollars to the Clinton Foundation?
I think you know that answer.
This weeks bottom line: Take the time to watch this movie. If you dont have a computer, borrow one or go to someone you know and watch it together. Then decide
whom youll vote for our next President.
The film exposes the alarming pattern of record-high speaking fees to Bill Clinton and
donations to the Clinton Foundation from foreign contributors, which coincided with
favors for those closest to the Clintons and their foundation donors while Hillary Clinton
served as secretary of state.
The world is a dangerous place to live, not because of the people who are evil, but
because of the people who don't do anything about it.

Greatest International
Scavenger Hunt the World
Has Ever Seen
Every December 31st, I sit in my comfiest chair and begin to write
out exactly what I hope for the coming year. Some years it is as simple as wanting to sleep better or read more books, other years it is
as major as deciding on a career path or which steps to take next in
a relationship. These final moments each year, spent calculating my
next steps may seem a superstitious ritual, but it really is my
favorite way to start a new chapter right.
According to National Geographic, this year I will have exactly
one extra second as the Earth spins round the Sun to make my list.
Should I add an extra resolution or simply take an extra moment to
breath in the last of 2016? Can one extra second actually change the
course of a year? A life? The world? It has been suggested that these
"leap seconds", while seemingly inconsequential, can have massive
effects on, not only the long term calendars we use, but also anything hooked into a network data base. It is mind blowing how
impactful a small fraction of a minute can be. As I ponder how to
use that second wisely, my GISHWHES team, NerdsOfAFeather,
have been so lovely as to remind me that I have wasted almost
1,000 times as many seconds contemplating the issue - and that
itself is a stark reminder that life is fleeting and we'd be wise not to
waste a single moment longing for more.

month and is geared for students in grades 6-12 with an interest in birding. High quality binoculars and field guides are provided for meetings and field trips, so no additional equipment
is needed
The nature center is fortunate to have many species of birds
visit at different times of the year to take advantage of the various resources the land provides them.
The question often comes up from visitors, How can I
attract animals to my own yard? Join us this month as we
explore BNC through the eyes of a bird in search of food,
water, and shelter, which are essential for survival. We also
will take some time to discuss what will help attract birds and
other animals to your own back yards.
The nature center is located at 5995 Horseshoe Bend Rd.,
Troy.
Those having questions should contact Brian at
brian@bruknernaturecenter.com.

*

Did you know that out of more than 2,700 species of plants and
animals found in Ohio, 100 are classified as invasive, or alien? From
the emerald ash borer to honeysuckle and everywhere in between,
invasive species are posing a threat to native wildlife everywhere by
shading, eating, overcrowding, or outcompeting them.
join jess Besecker, Darke County Parks Summer Intern, on
Tuesday, Aug. 16, at 6:30 p.m., as she discusses these invasive plants
and animals, how to identify them, and how to remove them. jess is
a senior majoring in Biology and is studying invasive alien species
through her program at Wright State University.

programs, please give the Nature Center a call at 937-548-0165, or

program Friday, Aug. 12, 6-7 p.m., at Stillwater Prairie Reserve,
9750 St. Rt. 185 in Covington.
Take a hike for health and join park district health and wellness
specialist, registered nurse Marion, for this weekly low-impact walk.
Relevant topics such as heart health, diet and nutrition, diabetes prevention, stress relief, and many others will be discussed during this
12-walk series. Remember to wear weather-appropriate gear and
walking shoes for comfort.
Registration not required but highly recommended. Register by
going to the program calendar at MiamiCountyParks.com; emailing register@miamicountyparks.com; or calling 937-335-6273,
ext. 109.

For the past several years, when

paid advertising isnt scheduled for
the front page of the Stillwater Valley
Advertiser, weve been publishing
Take Us Along pictures, randomly
drawn from entries received over the
past several months. Our readers tell
us how much they enjoy seeing where
their friends and neighbors spent their
vacations.
Contest submissions must include
a COLOR photograph with someone
holding a copy of the Advertiser, with
a scenic background showcasing your
vacation destination, such as the
Golden Gate Bridge, Statue of
Liberty, Grand Canyon, etc. Photos
taken in private homes and yards,
restaurants, airports, etc., are not
acceptable contest entries. Photos
must be in focus and not too dark or
too light.

Caitlyn Crawford Earns Degree

From University of the Sciences
Caitlyn Crawford of Covington received a B.S. degree in
Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Studies magna cum laude on May 20
from University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She
now continues on a path towards a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. She
is a member of the Rho Chi and the Alpha Lambda Delta honor
socieities and the womens volleyball team.

Include the names of the persons

pictured and background information
about your trip (dates, points of interest, amusing anecdotes, whatever you
wish to include in your picture caption). Weve drawn many contest
entries that would have been perfect,
but they lacked sufficient information
and had to be rejected.
Most importantly, many entries
dont include a return mailing address
so the winner can have their picture
returned to them along with their contest prize. If emailing your entry, it
should be in a jPeG or TIFF format
and
emailed
to:
arenspub@gmail.com.
Mailed contest entries should be
addressed to: Arens Corporation Stillwater Valley Advertiser Take
Us Along Contest, 395 S. High St. P.O. Box 69, Covington, OH 45318.
With vacation season just around
the corner, we look forward to receiving many Take Us Along contest
pictures. Dont forget to invite the
Advertiser along on your next vacation!!!

Guidelines For AdvertisinG

in our CAlendAr oF events
There has been some confusion regarding advertising in our
Calendar of Events ($13 for the first week and $6.50 for each
additional week, containing all your pertinent details), with the
guarantee of one free news article containing more comprehensive information about your event.
A rule of thumb to remember is that if a church, school, or
organization is charging for a meal or event, regardless of where
the profits will be directed, you must pay to advertise it in the
Stillwater Valley Advertiser. The key word in the name of our
paper is advertiser. We are able to remain in business only
through paid advertising. If we were to advertise these dinners/events by way of free news articles, it would be unfair to the
restaurants and organizations who do pay for display advertising.
One exception to this guideline would be if a charitable event
is held, with all proceeds benefitting an individual or family,
such as in the case where someone is battling an illness or recovering from a tragic event.
The free news articles we publish are provided as a service to
our readers, on an as space is available basis, depending on the
number of paid advertisers we have for a given issue. We cannot
guarantee free news articles will be published.
We hope this explanation clarifies our position. We wish we
could print each and every news article submitted to us but,
unfortunately, the reality is that it would be financially impossible to do so.

Thank You
