Curriculum Overview | Grade 5

The Curriculum Overview provides content benchmarks for language arts, mathematics, science, social
studies, and health. In one consolidated document, the Curriculum Overview includes the following:
Overview of required curriculum
Content benchmarks aligned with ES Progress Report Standards
Quarterly focus for Critical and Creative Thinking Strategies
Links to the Planning and Pacing Guide for each content area
Suggested pacing of units of study in health
Protocol for use and discussion of Curriculum Overview

Elementary School Progress Report Standards

Content benchmarks are aligned with the Progress Report Standards as listed below. Please note that only
the Progress Report Standards that are an instructional focus in a given quarter are indicated on the
Curriculum Overview. Some Progress Report Standards may not be an instructional focus that quarter.

Suggested Quarterly Focus for Critical and Creative Thinking Strategies

As identified in the FCPS Advanced Academic Programs, www.fcps.edu/is/aap/level1.shtml, the following
strategies support teachers use of critical and creative thinking skills in their daily instruction. Regular use
of these strategies as a means of processing and showing understanding of content will both help students
make deeper meaning of content as well as provide valuable assessment information for teachers.
