Interpersonal Communication
For the Semester-Long Multimodal Inquiry Project myself and my two partners will be
discussing the topic of interpersonal communication. Interpersonal communication, steadily
decreasing across the United States, is communication in which one exchanges information with
another face-to-face. Interpersonal communication is decreasing due to many technological
advances such as: computers, cell phones, laptops, etc. This is a problem because it affects
multiple areas of our lives such as jobs, schools, and professional life. For example, one of the
negative effects of interpersonal communication is when one is discriminated against because of
their name on an application. This is connected to a theory we learned in global connections
called the gaze vs. voice. This is when one makes assumptions on another based on looking at
the person instead of getting to know the person. Since I understand how interpersonal
communication is decreasing with my rhetoric knowledge, I feel as though to presenting this
issue to my fellow classmates will not be difficult.
The reason we decided to present a topic on interpersonal communication is because in
todays society many individuals do not communicate face-to-face which is causing a big
decrease in public speaking. Interpersonal communication decreasing also is setting many teens
up for failure in the real world because they are lacking the skill to communicate with others
face-to-face. The last reason interpersonal communication is decreasing is because of social
media and individuals communicating online with individuals they may or may not know. This

also opens up another problem, catfishing, which is when one basically falls in love with
someones picture and in the end they find out it was all fake.
During the Semester-Long Multimodal Inquiry Project we will be discussing the
importance of interpersonal communication. There will be a slideshow made on Microsoft
PowerPoint and a video will be incorporated to help explain our topic. We will incorporate our
everyday life experiences to help make our presentation more relatable. Others would be
interested on learning more about interpersonal communication because of the negative impacts
on society. The negative impacts include: catfishing, stereotyping, and discrimination.
Lastly, online critics have challenged my thoughts as to getting to know more about
interpersonal communication. This is because critics always state what the problem is; however,
they never give a solution as to how to fix the problem. With this project my partners and I plan
to present a solution as to how to get interpersonal communication thriving again.
