BALANCE APPROACH TO READING PROTOCOL

The teacher will encourage students to write a different version of the book by using a different adjective to describe the
house. Each student will then contribute a page for the new class big book by creating their own character and descriptive
phrase.

The teacher will encourage students to come-up with their own adjectives to describe the characters. Record the new
adjectives on post-its and place on T-chart. List other animals not listed in the book and ask students to come up with new
descriptive phrases using nouns and adjectives.

Possible Follow
Up

After Reading

On chart paper, draw a T-Chart with the word Character on the right and the word Adjective on the left. As the teacher
reads the story, the students will identify each new character as they appear in the story. As the characters are identified, the During Reading
teacher will write their names on the T-Chart. The students will then be asked to identify the adjective that is used to
describe each character. The teacher will ask students to use pictures to help define each new adjectives. The teacher will
then write the adjective on the T-Chart. The teacher will emphasize the placement of the adjective before each noun. As the
teacher reads the story, the students will join in by reading the repetitive phrase that appears throughout the story.

We begin to engage the students by reading the title of the book to the students. We will then ask students if they know what
the word napping means. The students will then be asked to look at the picture of the house in the first page of the book.
As they look closely at the picture, they will be asked to describe it using one word. The students responses will be written
on chart paper. The words used to describe the house will be referred to as adjectives. We will define adjectives as words
that describe.
