EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The projects main concern is to develop effective reading skills
that

can

help

target

students

handle

their

reading

process

efficiently. The Read a Bit, Make It a Habit is constructed to


answer the needs of the students of Payatas Elementary School (PES)
who

can

not

read

We envision young people who are willing to learn, to be able to enjoy


full participation on the activities given and sooner will be capable
of doing things only with their own.

II. PROJECT PROPOSAL PROPER

INTRODUCTION

Reading has been the main source of knowledge, perception and


even satisfaction. Through reading, we are being exposed to something
that is unusual to us. It is a keystone for child's achievement, and
definitely, throughout life.
According to studies, 85% of children with learning difficulties
have a primary problem with reading and language skills. Undeniably,

children who exercise reading do better in school and other activities


and therefore, illustrates its significance to society.
It is essential to practice reading constantly, yet some of the
schools

here

in

our

country

in

books,

libraries

as

well

as

mentors. That's why the JITS Organization come up with the project,
"Read a Bit, Make It a Habit." The focus of this project is Payatas

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Read a Bit, Make It a Habit project aims to accommodate the
huge

bump

of

youth

specifically

the

students

of

PES

(Payatas

Elementary School). Students from grades 1 who undergo difficulties in


reading are required to attend the scheduled date of tutorials. Other
students who are willing to participate the reading session can also
attend the said tutorials. It will take 3-5 hours of discussion once a
week. The progam will commence every year. Volunteers and visitors are
expected to pay visit to the project site and read for the students
and help them comprehend the subject in an engaging way. Materials and

supplies are provided by the organization throughout the three-year


project duration.
As part of the project, students have the opportunity to explore
and improve their reading skills in their area of interest. They are
allowed to choose individually their favorite books and assign them to
read it in the whole class. Students are also involved in writing and
drawing in the process of reading. Some students love to be creative
when it comes to drawing and illustrations that add visual imagery to
the stories. Games are facilitated through the discussion since we are
catering young learners to keep them motivated the whole session of
reading.

Prizes

every

session

for

all

the

participants as an appreciation for their active cooperation. By the


end of the program, students are given certificate of recognition.

Objectives:
1. The projects ultimate goal is to prepare young learners for a
better future. It is not only about helping students to read,
but also creating a personal bond among students and become
mentors for them in their lives.

Significance:
The Read a Bit, Make It a Habit project is significant as it
provides the following:
1. The opportunity to help approximately 100 150 students of
grade 1 improve their reading habit.
2. The appropriate reading level of the students through these
acquired reading skills.
3. The assurance to become productive citizen in the future as
they continue to use their reading skills.

Suggested Manpower
In order to make this project organized and effective, this must
be

manned

by

staff

composing

of

facilitator,

mentors

and

assistants. The faclitator shall act as a recorder and a monitor who


takes

charge

of

the

number

of

books,

school

supplies

and

other

documents necssary for the proposal. The mentors shall be responsible


for the target students to teach and guide them every session of
tutorials.

The

assistants

may

aid

the

facilitator,

monitor

the

inventories of books and school supplies and keep the site in order.
The organization will provide the required manpower including their
incentives and compensation related for this project proposal.

The projet site is located at Payatas Elementary School. It is


established near the school library. There will be a sign board of
JITS: Read a Bit, Make It a Habit before entering the room. The
construction of the building starts on Januarythis year sponsored by
the city government of Pateros.
The building is about 36 m x 36 m, a fully airconditioned room,
has

electric

fans

and

proper

ventilation.

It

is

installed

with

furniture and fixtures such as bookshelves, tables, chairs and other


important things necessary for a lbrary-liked room. Since it is near
the library, it is expected to be quite somehow for the students to
focus on the activities they will be having.
Timetable of the Project
It

is

desired

that

the

completion

of

the

project

will

be

accomplished in three year period. The first year of operation will be


on June 2016- March 2017 following the School year calendar. It is
expected that the organization will meet its goal: to establish good
relationship with the school coordinator on which the project will be
conducted, processing of the permits needed to start the operation,
the manpower or people involved, orientation of the purpose of the
project, construction of building, acquisition of school supplies for
about one million pesos that serves as a treat for the participant and
acquisition of about one million five hundred thousand worth of books
with

different

subjects,

genres,

stories

and

etc.

can

be

helpful for the students to appreciate the beauty of reading. It is


anticipated that the school supplies will be distributed equally upon

the

span

of

the

project

and

about

one

third

of

the

school

supplies will be used by this first year of the operation.


The second year of operation will be on June 2017- March 2018.
Another set or batches of students will be accommodated. One half of
the remaining school supplies will be used. The first set or batches
of students in the first year of operation are still part of the said
program. Some of the books that are not yet use on its first year of
operation will be used this time but some of the books that are
already damaged will be prohibited to use and borrow by the students
without

any

assistance

of

the

assigned

personnel.

The third year of operation will be on June 2018- March 2019. The
project is still on its operation and this will be the final rating of
the

performance

held

by

the

group

for

the

entire

project.

The

remaining school supplies will be used by this last year of operation.


A survey will be conducted on how many percentages of the students
change their mind that reading books is not boring but rather it is a
good

habit.

An

interview

for

the

students

involved

will

also

be

conducted by asking them if they excel in reading and if they already


love reading. These are just some ways or methods that can be helpful
for the rating.
A meeting will be conducted by the group whether the materials
they used in the project will be donated or transfer to the custody of
the school which the project site are held or it will be donated or

transfer to the custody of another group which wanted to continue the


said project.
