Math Homework Procedure

In the University Model School, the majority of review happens at home. The purpose of math homework
is to reinforce concepts taught in class and allow you to review, one-on-one, with your child. It is critical
that you check your childs homework and correct it together so that your child will not fall behind. Please
set aside dedicated time for this during each home day. My goal as your childs teacher is to help you and
your child succeed at math and in the UMS model. Following the procedures below will help immensely.
Homework Worksheets Procedure
Please follow this procedure for completing math worksheets at home.

At the top of the first worksheet, your child should write the time he or she began and ended all
of todays
homework, and write the total time spent on the assignment. Example: 11:50
12:40, 50 minutes
The time applies to completion of all of the homework
pages EXCEPT for fact practice. This shows me how long it is taking the class as a whole to
finish math homework and it provides consistent practice of elapsed time problems.
Remind your child to fill in name, date, and the number sentence problem located under the
name line.
Allow your child to work all of the problems he or she can do alone.
Check the students work and circle all incorrect answers. Please also make note of problems
that were completed with your help.
Go back and review problems your child missed and have your child correct the missed items of
to the side or underneath. Please do not erase incorrect answers. This will allow me to
know what the class as a whole is grasping and what needs to be reviewed again in class time.
Sign at the top of each worksheet showing that youve checked the work and the student has
corrected it.

Homework Grades
Homework grades are given to encourage consistent review and practice. Students will receive credit for
all correct answers, even those that were corrected with a parent. Students lose points for incorrect
answers that have not been corrected with the co-teacher. This applies to all concepts, even the new
ones, so please email me if you are unsure of how to complete a problem. Please do not skip problems or
leave them blank. We will be building on these concepts during the next class day, so its important that
your child understands at home. Your time together is crucial for reinforcing and reteaching concepts.
Parent Pages
I provide a Parent Page for each Saxon homework worksheet to help you as you are co-teaching at home.
These may be found on our class website. If you have any questions about a problem after referring to the
Parent Page, please email me.
Parent Signature Required on Homework
Legacy requires your signature on math homework. Five points will be deducted if it is missing. The goal
in doing this is to ensure that you, the co-teacher, assess what your child is struggling with in math, review
the concept, and then have the student make corrections in order to learn the concept.
Encourage, Encourage, Encourage!
Some of the concepts may take your child longer to learn than others. By working together as teacher and
co-teacher, we can identify difficulties when they arise and address them together. Please contact me
about any concerns, great or small, so we can help your child feel good about math. I want the students to
know that, with practice and perseverance, they can succeed in math!
Math time can be a great opportunity to shape character. In the end, your encouragement and reflection
of the Fathers heart are more important than the math concept.
