School district to establish incubator for student-run startups

COLUMBUS State Rep. John Rogers recently announced the release of $368,680

initial state approval of the grant
application in late June.

The Straight A Fund was established to help schools

launch creative new ideas for improving education and to transform Ohios education system
into one that meets the unique
needs of every student in every
classroom. The Ohio Department
of Education received over 141

Lawmakers pass bipartisan plan to legalize medical marijuana

HB 523 will give patients, doctors alternatives for treatment of severe illnesses
At a time when our state and many others are confronting rising rates of opioid addiction and heroin use
related to the use of prescription painkillers, I
believe it is our responsibility to explore safe,
non-habit forming alternatives to chronic pain
treatment and relief from symptoms of chronic illness. This includes expanding access to
medical marijuana, which polls show some 90
percent of Ohioans support legalizing.1
Recently, the state legislature passed House
Bill (HB) 523, bipartisan legislation to allow
Ohio residents access to medical marijuana.
The new law will permit doctors with ongoing relationships with patients to prescribe them medical marijuana as a treatment for certain chronic illnesses. With
the passage of HB 523, Ohio has become the 25 th state
plus the District of Columbia to allow medical marijuana.2

cer, chronic pain, epilepsy, traumatic brain injury,

Parkinsons disease spinal cord injury, HIV, AIDS, posttraumatic stress disorder and intractable
pain.3
The law does not allow for individuals to grow
the plant at home. Patients and parents of
children who are prescribed cannabis for
medical purposes will be issued a license.
With the license, caregivers and patients cannot be arrested for possessing or using marijuana. The law also creates an appointed nine
-member control commission to regulate distribution.
