Introduction
This document covers the installation and running of the Maxava

maxView Lite suite.
Objectives
The objectives of this document are to provide information regarding

the installation and use of the various monitor components. Areas

Security Settings
Must be read
For maxView Lite there are two programs which are required to adopt
QSECOFR authority in order to be able to retrieve the required system
information. They are programs MXMNCFST and MXVWCFST.
After installation, if required, the owner of these objects can be changed
to one of your choosing that still has enough authority to perform the
required checks.
HTTPS
Settings
For greater security the maxView browser sessions can be configured to

run using https:\\ (HTTP Secure). This is the recommended approach to
using the maxView browser clients. See Appendix A at the end of the
document for configuration instructions.

maxView Lite Introduction

Introduction
maxView Lite has been designed to enable System i customers to

monitor their general system statistics via a HTML5 browser based
interface.
maxView Lite is supported on operating systems V5R3 and above and
requires the appropriate DG1 IBM HTTP Server for i5/OS LICPGM to
be present.
The PC installing the application requires Adobe Air to be installed and
to have JavaScript turned on for all browsers. Flash Player 10 or above
is also required.
This browser based technology therefore allows for monitoring from
HTML5 browser capable smart phones and tablets.

maxView Lite Implementation and Configuration

Software Initial
Install
The maxView_AirLte.air package requires the Adobe AIR software in

order to be executed on a PC. This software is available from the Adobe
website. http://get.adobe.com/air/
To install maxView run the maxView_AirLte.air executable on a PC
which has communications available to the required IBM i servers. The
installation uses FTP to load the required objects onto the IBM i. You
will need to ensure that the FTP servers are started and that you do not
have any third party software or similar blocking FTP requests between
the PC and the IBM i.
The software requires an object owner to exist on each of the IBM i
servers you will be installing on. The object owner profile is called
MAXNZ and should be created with no special authorities or sign on
capabilities.
On each system you will be installing the monitor create the following
user profile before installing the software.

You then need to create the library to install the maxView software
objects into. You can call the library by whatever name you chose,
however we recommend the name MXMNLITE.
On each system you will be installing the monitor create the
MXMNLITE library.

When you run the executable the first screen you will see is the
software authentication screen. If you do not see this screen do not
install the application and please contact Maximum Availability
Limited to confirm the version you have is correct.
Select Install and proceed.
At this point you can either accept the defaults or change the installation
preferences. Once satisfied with the settings select Continue to
proceed.

Configuration
As the product loads the screen above will be shown.
When the main PC install has been completed the maxView Lite
configuration screen will automatically be displayed.

Enter in the details for your first system to be monitored.
Details required are system name, system IP address, HTTP port

number to be used, defaults to 8024 and the name of the library to be
used on the system. The library should already exist and be empty. The
TCP Port being used, defaults to 4999. Enter the required license key
obtained from the www.maxviewlite.com website if not automatically
directed there by the install process. Enter the email address used when
registering at the website.
When you are happy with the details entered select ADD

You will then be required to accept the maxView End User Licence
Agreement.
The next screen will prompt you to enter your IBM i logon information.

Enter your details and select LOGIN
At this point the transfer of required code from your PC to the IBM i
will take place. You can keep track of what is occurring via the progress
window in the lower half of the screen.

When the install has finished and the servers started successfully the
following message is displayed.
Select OK. The next screen will show your added system listed on the
left hand side of the window.
If you wish to add another system at this time, or in the future, simply
select the Add System button at the top right of the screen.

Settings
When you have finished adding your systems you will see them all
listed on the left hand side of the screen. To work with the threshold
alert settings and the auto refresh options, select the General button to
go into the general view and then select the required system. If you
have made any changes to the the threshold alert values and wish them
to be applied you need to select the UPDATE button.
Threshold values for the Widget are unique for each Widget instance
and do not affect the system settings which are controlled via the
Browser/Tablet/Smart Phone settings options.

The View Systems view allows you to work with the specific system
connection details and also to remove a system from the monitor.

When you have made all your required additions and changes exit the
configuration screen by selecting the windows top right close button.
The main maxView Widget is then shown.

Which Adopts
QSECOFR
There are two programs which are required to adopt QSECOFR

maxView Widget
Running the
maxView
Widget
The maxView Widget is shown after the main configuration screens

have been closed or when started from the START, All Programs
menu on the PC.
It is installed as a program onto your PC and is accessed via the
START All Programs maxView_AirLte link.
To move the widget on your screen select the top or bottom bar and
drag the widget to the desired screen position.
The Widget also has a system tray icon visible when running which
shows a warning symbol if any of the monitored systems have warnings
for issues covered by the widget.

The Widget when minimised stays active in the system tray. If you right
click on the Widget it allows you to Restore to maximise the Widget
to your desktop, News to open the maxNews page, Settings to open
the configuration screens and Exit to close the Widget completely.

The main Widget screen displays the following information.

maxNews shows the latest news available from

MAXAVA. When a new news item is available
you will see the RED mail flag on the letter
icon. Click on the envelope to find out what
new offerings are available from MAXAVA.

Shows the CPU percentage currently utilised.

Accessing the
Browser Client
The maxView Lite Browser client can be launched in one of two ways.
You can either left mouse click on the CPU dial shown on the maxView
Lite Widget, or you can navigate directly to the required system and
HTTP server.
So to open a browser session and connect to your IBM i maxView Lite
HTTP server using your PC, connect to the system IP address (if you
are external to your companies network you may need to have a valid
VPN connection started), followed by the HTTP port number and then
the maxview.html page.
This can be performed on any of the systems on which the monitor is
installed and running.
So for a system with an IP address of 192.168.0.98 running the monitor
on port 8024 you would enter the following address:
http://192.168.0.98:8024
When accessing the systems you will be prompted with logon screens
for each of the systems the monitor is attempting to connect to. If your
user profile exists on all systems being connected to you will only
receive the one logon request.
Enter your IBM i logon details. Once authenticated the main maxView
Lite browser window will be shown.

You can save the browser page as a bookmark if required for future use
and call it maxView Lite.
Selecting a system takes you to the SYSTEM SUMMARY page.

The SYSTEM SUMMARY page has the same information as the

SYSTEM CONTROL PANEL but in more expanded detail.
Also information on:
Batch Jobs running, Number of Batch Jobs in MSGW, Users signed on,
CMDS and Dashboards (WRKACTJOB, WRKSYSSTS, WRKOUTQ,
DSPMSG, WRKSBS, MXPATROL, Storage Dash, System
Performance Dash, IBM i Summary information and Alert and
Threshold settings) for this system display.

Monitor or Managers products the greyed out

shield would show the highest warning status of
any of the monitored configurations for the
system shown. There would also be a remote
journal communications pipe attached to the
shield showing a moving data icon between the
CPU percentage wheel and the shield when
there are no remote journal communication
issues. If any of the remote journals for any of
the monitored configurations have an issue a
pipe break icon would be displayed.

To view individual detailed information for a

given configuration, left mouse click on the
shield and the CONFIGURATION DETAIL
page would be shown.
This is a set of Commands that can be run on
the selected system.
Shows WRKACTJOB information for the
given system.
Shows WRKSYSSTS information for the given
system.
Run the WRKOUTQ command for a selected
output queue and then work with the spool files
listed
Shows the WRKDSKSTS information for the
given system
Shows general summary information for
system.
Allows you to set alert threshold values for the
system and also the auto refresh interval for this
particular client instance.
System statistics dash
Storage dashboard.
Shows information gathered from running the
storage collection program. This program
should be scheduled to run in batch via the
JOBSCD or similar processes. The program
should be run from the maxView Lite software
library (normally called MXMNLITE) and has
two required parameters. The first defines how
many library servers are run during storage data
collection and the second defines how many
IFS servers will run.
In the example below there will be 15 library
and 15 IFS server jobs submitted. Depending
on how many servers are set to run these jobs
will use a certain amount of resource on your

system, so should be run at a time when their

impact is minimal. Or you can run with fewer
servers however the jobs will take longer to
complete retrieving the storage statistics.
It is important to note that if you require QDLS
information to be retrieved the profile running
the job must be enrolled in the system
directory.

The information gathered by the storage server
jobs is stored in history files located in the
maxView software library.

parameter which is the date to clear data up to.

The WRKACTJOB button shows the Work with Active Jobs details for
the given system.
Double clicking on a job will provide more details. If a job is in MSGW
selecting the joblog option will also allow you to answer the message.
To refresh the statistics select the Refresh Stats button to the right of

The WRKSYSSTS button shows the Work with System Status details
for the given system.

The IBM i Summary tab provides information on high level system

details regarding Operating System, OS PTF levels, RDB information
as well as Maxava HA Summary details and information regarding
Product details, License Key, maxView Version, Autonomics Setup and

Summary SETTINGS
The Settings button accesses the Set System Alert Thresholds display,
which allows you to work with the threshold alert settings and the auto
refresh options.
When you make any changes to the threshold alert values and wish
them to be applied you need to select the UPDATE button.
The Auto Refresh option controls the frequency of the refresh runs on
the system. If the value is set to 4, then a refresh of the data for the
monitor will run every 4 minutes on the defined system.

Dashboard
The Storage Dashboard shows you the data collected by the previously
submitted MXVWLCTL storage detail jobs. You will see the latest run
displayed or you can select the required date from the drop down box.
Selecting one of the pie charts or an item from any of the tables will
show you the statistics for that particular item from all available runs.

The Performance Dashboard shows you the system performance data

displayed by your browser session whilst connected. You can scrol
through the data using the arrows, collect another sample by pressing
the refresh stats button or restart the statistics by pressing the reset stats
button.

File
You can colour code your alerts in the browser either red or yellow by
updating the MXMNALRT file via DFU. The file resides in the
maxView Software library. Change the ALERT_LVL field to 1 for
yellow or 2 for red. When the alert threshold is reached the relevant
item will change to that colour on your browser.

maxView iPhone & iPad or HTML5 Capable Smartphone

or Tablet
In order to use maxView Lite on your iPhone, iPad, Android or

Blackberry etc, you will need to first ensure you have a connection to
your work network.
For most this will mean a VPN connection which will allow you access
via wireless and 3G.

To configure a VPN connection on your iPhone or iPad use the

Settings, General, Network, VPN, Add VPN Configuration and enter
in the relevant connection details for your network.
Once configured connect to your work network.
iPhone Safari

Then open a Safari browser session and connect to your IBM i

maxView Lite HTTP server. This can be on any of the systems on
which the monitor is installed and running.

If you are using an Android or Blackberry use the relevant HTML5

browser and connect to the following appropriate addresses using that.
Save the link to your favourites and then access the pages from there in
the future.

Connect to the system IP address, followed by the HTTP port number

and then the ip.html or tablet.html page.
ip.html for smartphones and tablet.html for tablets.
So for a system with an IP address of 192.168.0.98 running the monitor
on port 8024 you would enter the following address for your iPhone or
smartphone:
http://192.168.0.98:8024/ip.html
You can also enter the address simply as http://192.168.0.98:8024 and
the bowser should auto detect which type of device you are using and
display the correct page.
For you iPad or tablet you would go to:
http://192.168.0.98:8024/tablet.html or http://192.168.0.98:8024
As you connect to each system you will be prompted for your IBM i
access details.

iPhone Home
Page Icon
Once connected if you wish to add an icon to your iPhone home page
screen simply select the + icon at the bottom of the screen and then
select the Add to Home Screen button. You follow a similar process
for the iPad.

Then give your new icon a name, e.g. maxView Lite. Then add it.
You should now have an icon which looks something like this on your
iPhone.
Now when you wish to check your systems all you need to do is enable
your VPN connection and press the maxView Lite icon to connect.

Main Device
Screens
Once connected you will see an initial splash screen followed by the
main screen which will show system being monitored.
Select the system by touching either the dial icon or its name beside it.
Where you are monitoring multiple systems scroll down to see the
additional systems etc.

On the iPad it looks like this. Select the systems from the bottom
navigation bar.
The data displayed will automatically be updated on the device as per

the MXMNLITE server refresh interval set at the system level. You can
force a manual refresh by select the refresh icon at the bottom left of the
screen on both devices.

Notification
Centre
The following screens are available for the iPhone and smartphone
devices. Similar iPad and tablet screens are also available.
Notification Centre You can display this by selecting the exclamation
mark at the bottom of the screen. This shows alerts for the systems.

reporting and
action functions
IBM i Button
To access the main system reporting and action functions select the
IBM i button at the top right of the screen. These all function in a
similar way to the PC Flash version. You can display OUTQs and then

System
Dashboard
The Sys Dashboard option shows you graphs of collected data from the
period the session has been active on the device. You can scroll down to
see more charts and graphs.

Dashboard
The Storage Dashboard shows storage run information gathered by the

MXVWLCTL collection jobs.
Selecting one of the pie charts or an item from any of the tables will
show you the statistics for that particular item from all available runs.

The HA button at the bottom of the screen will take you to the
maxava.com website where you will be able to see more information on

For the MAXLIB parameter use the name of the library you installed
the software into.
If a new version of the monitor software is made available there are two
upgrade options.
Firstly where only the Widget software client has had a change made
all you will need to do is uninstall the Widget on the appropriate PCs
prior to installing the new maxView_AirLte.air package. From the PC
Control Panel use the Add Remove Programs option. Alternatively
when installing the new package if an old version is detected you will
be prompted to uninstall automatically first.

The second option is where the code on the IBM i systems needs to be
updated. The code required for this is also contained within the
maxView_AirLte.air package and means that you will need to not only
re-install the Widget software onto the PC however also then re-upload
the required objects to each of the IBM i systems being monitored.
To do this you will need to first remove the maxView HTTP server on
each of IBM i systems using the MXMNRMV command specifying the
library name used at the time of install. The MXMNRMV command is
located in the maxView Lite product library on the system, so this
library will need to be added to your library list before running. So if
the libarary installed into was called MXMNLITE the command would
be MXMNRMV MAXLIB(MXMNLITE)
Then remove the Widget from the PC to be used to re-send the code to
the IBM i systems and install the new version from the new
maxView_AirLte.air file.
Once installed from the maxView Configurations Settings window and

the View Systems tab, select the available systems and use the
DELETE button to remove their details from the Widget instance.
When all systems have been removed go to the Add System tab and
re-add the required systems. As you enter in the individual system
details you will be prompted to log onto the relevant system and the
required program objects will be uploaded once more to the system and
the HTTP server started.

Removal
To remove the maxView Monitor from your systems, simply remove

the Widget code form your PC using the PC Control Panel Add remove
Programs option and then remove the maxView HTTP server on each
of IBM i systems using the MXMNRMV command specifying the
library name used at the time of install.
The MXMNRMV command is located in the maxView Lite product
library on the system, so this library will need to be added to your
library list before running. So if the library installed into was called
MXMNLITE the command to run would be:

Appendix A Set-up instructions for HTTPS
Must be Read
NB: These instructions are for IBM i OS7.1 where no previous

certifcate store settings have been created. If you already have
certificate stores created or you are using an earlier version of the
Operating System some of the screens may differ to what you see
below, however the general steps should still be similar.
If you require assistance in configuring https:\\ on your systems the
MAXAVA service team can assist at our standard hourly rates.

Ensure the HTTP admin server is started on your IBM i. (STRTCPSVR

*HTTP *ADMIN)
Log into the DCM (Digital Certificate Manager) with this URL

Replace 192.168.0.98 with your systems ip address.

Create a certificate authority. (note the password as this will be needed

continue if you wish). The browser certificate is located in your IFS and
can be downloaded and installed on your PC at any time.

you want to add. In this instance select Server Add a server

can navigate to another page or exit the browser session as you have

You now need to update the HTTPD.CONF file for the version of
maxView you have installed on your system.
This file is located on your IBM i system under the IFS under the
ROOT directory in the www/<maxView_version> directory.

On your IBM i perform the following:

Replace the first line of the HTTPD.CONF file which should look like

With these lines:

(NB: You will need to change the IP address and port number to match
what is installed on your system. The (8443) port is a random port
number in this instance. Select a port number you know is available and
you wish to use for the secure connection)

information to what is installed on your systems. Port 8443 shown in

Now as long as you have loaded the created certificate into your various
browser stores on your PC you can access the maxView pages using
HTTPS, e.g.:
https//192.168.9.98:8443/maxview.html
Using the example above will show you the maxView Lite browser
information now using the added security.
