Self-awareness

At Freedom Schools, scholars learn about the

Birmingham Childrens Crusade and the
importance of their voice, even if they are young
and how they fit within the civil rights movement at
large

Social

A group of pre-teen girls played a hand game

called, Slap Dealioso (spelling?).It was lively,
spirited and filled with laughter.

Moral

When two young girls ventured out into the

wooded area of a park, their counselor asked them
to not wonder by themselves and had them sit
down to consider alternative actions they could
have taken.

Emotional

A counselor comforted a student who was not tall

enough to ride the zip line on the play ground

Cognitive

A student taught a tutor some Somali words which

increased both of their knowledge.

Creative

A child used three small sticks, some string and

some other random objects to tie together a
fishing pole. His imagination to see a stick and
found materials in a new way was endearing and
inspiring.

Faith/ Belief

Some youth celebrated the Eid, which is a holiday

at the end of Ramadan, by gathering together to a
small party
