ALDINGA BAY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION

Dear Reader,

Index

ABRA has again been involved in various events over the last
financial year.
Our major annual undertaking was again the Australia Day
Breakfast. It was very well attended again this year with over 630
hot meals given out. Approximately 570 of those were in the first
two hours.
Another significant event that has happened in the area is the
opening of a Vinnies Freds Van service in September 2015. This
was supported by the Aldinga-Sellicks Alliance and is based at the
Aldinga Community Centre on Friday evenings. Volunteers cook
and provide nutritious meals for those in need using food sourced
from organisations such as food bank and Oz Harvest.
Two Deadly Fun Run events were held in the district this
year. These are part of the Indigenous Marathon Project and provide
the opportunity and encouragement for both indigenous and nonindigenous people and families to be involved in a fun run/walk.
Despite unfortunate weather the events were well attended.
Representatives from these events were also selected to take part in
a Marathon at Uluru later in the year.
A proposal has been put up to establish art boards in the
wetlands area adjacent to the Aldinga Central Shopping Centre and
have an event where artists can paint the boards either annually or
every six months. ABRA has put their support behind this and our
Vice President Bob Evans is in negotiations with members of the
local art community and council to see if we can make this
eventuate.
The Aldinga On Display event, which was very successful in
2009 and 2011 has been re-formatted. Rather than a day for the
local clubs, community groups and service providers to show their
wares & facilities this year it will be a weekend of events ranging
from the Friday Childrens Week event at the ACC, then Friday
after Five market in Aldinga, events on the Saturday in various
areas and Aldinga Market on the Sunday. This is being organised
through the Aldinga-Sellicks Alliance and the majority of the
council grant for the event is being spent on the preparation and
printing of a fridge-mount type local community service directory,
to be released and distributed on the day called Aldinga Sellicks
at a Glance. The dates are set for 21-23rd October.
ABRA has been involved in consultations and/or
representations in the following developments:
Aldi Supermarket proposal for historic Aldinga Township,
Old Coach Road Maslin Beach redevelopment,
New Library planning,
Council Road Network plan,

Gary Hennessy has been in S.A. all his life, his earlier
days spent in the bush. As a cheesed-off sixteen year- old
he left home to conquer the brave new world - or to at
least survive in it.
He had heaps of jobs till he landed the one that's given
him the fulfillment he sought. He's been in real estate
since the mid-80's and hasn't looked back - but before that
he very nearly didn't even have a life to look forward to.
Having had 2 cancer operations, in 1982 he was given
just a 5% chance of living another two years.
He tested positive for a third time in 1983 but the doctors
at Flinders Medical had to re-examine their records when
his condition abruptly and inexplicably reversed. Their
earlier results were totally contradicted.
That was after he had gone for a full body scan - laid out
on a metal table with just a sheet under him and strict
instructions not to move - no, not to even blink - for forty
five minutes on each side.
And in turn that followed the profound spiritual
experience that changed everything (during an intense
argument with some church leaders he didn't agree with)
After arguing theology for 3 hours, Pastor Jim Kennedy,
had enough and said, "What is it you really want?" With
constant accusing voices in his head Gary didn't have to
think long about it and blurted out "Peace!" Jim
suggested he pray. He didn't know how, so Jim told him
to just talk to God. Then, noticing Gary's changed
countenance he said, "Did God answer your prayer?"
"Yes, He did!" Gary described it as being in the middle of
the deafening roar in a footy grand-final one moment and
then finding himself in the middle of the Simpson desert
with absolutely no sound. He couldn't even hear the
others breathing. He got his peace, lost his irrational
anger and just as suddenly, realised God was real.
Miraculously healed, he encourages others to reach out to
Christ to discover that He is real, and really can help.
Maybe that's why Gary got into real estate. Ha!

News from the Aldinga Bay Bowling Club.

Sadly, we recently farewelled some Members who are moving out of the area, at an informal afternoon tea gathering at
the club. Shirley and Fred Blake, (pictured below with
President Carol), Helen and Dean Slade, Mary and Roy
Muldoon, were all valued members and we wish them all
the best at their new clubs.

Our Club was recently delighted to receive a Minor Capital

Works grant of $5,000 from Onkaparinga Council that will
assist with the completion of B green upgrade.
Work is continuing to bring our second green up to competition standard in time for our 30th Anniversary Carnival in
September.

Here is a fact about the 1500s:
Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The
man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean
water, then all the other sons and men, then the women
and finally the children. Last of all the babies. By then
the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone
in it. Hence the saying, "Don't throw the baby out
with the bath water!"

Lions Ladies Boutique update
I would like to take this opportunity to thank so many people for their
good wishes and concerns while I have been off duty.. thankfully I
am now on the road to recovery, and able to share some time with all
the girls at the Boutique, I missed that so much.
We have had another good year at the Boutique, and are so grateful for
all the donations that are made each week, without these we could not
exist and be able to support so many worth while people in the
community, and others.
We also could not operate if we did not have the wonderful volunteers
that come out each week, rain or shine to do their stuff.
Our customers, many who have become friends, come along each
week, some to have a chat, some to give goods, and others to purchase
what they spot as bargains, and there are plenty of those.......
We have become a drop in centre in some way, a shoulder to support
others in their time of need, and sometimes just someone to have a
conversation with and share a joke or two, we all love our time
together, and are happy to help where it is necessary.
Financially we have done well too.. our donations in cash have been
approximately $85,000.....

The Get Together Club

A club exists in Aldinga Beach for adults with a
disability and their families.
The group encourages friendship, fun, connection and
inspiration.
It is the only group of its kind in the southern area.
The first meeting held at the Aldinga Life Care Hall was
a great success, with families sharing a meal, playing
games, and getting to know each other.
A variety of activities are planned for the monthly group
including singing, painting, puppet making, and guest
chefs. Ideas for activities are welcome and encouraged.
The Get Together Club has received a Community
Grant from the City of Onkaparinga and is also
supported by Minda Incorporated, Carer Support and
Disability SA. New members are always welcome.
The Get Together Club is held on the first Friday of
each month, at the Aldinga Life Care Hall, Pridham
Blvd, Aldinga Beach from 6.30 8.30pm.

Your Sense and Dollars.

A Money Smart Kid Part 1

by Nani Johnston
A few weeks ago, I had a conversation with a friend
about her 13 year old boy who lost a huge chunk of his
birthday money. He has a Visa debit card so he can use it
when he is out with his friends. He registered his debit
card with an on-line game company. $1 charge each time
for 3 lives didnt seem too much. But doing it 10 times a
day over 7 dayswell..it adds up!

I know we dont like talking about money. But it is

important to do so, especially in this modern age where
cash is slowly becoming invisible, replaced by a plastic
card. Studies have revealed that credit and debit cards
detached us from a true sense of spending money.
Paywave increases this even more so. Spending money
has never been more convenient and easy.
It is never too early to introduce a financial concept to
children. The first place a kid learns about financial
responsibility is from the parents.
You can lead by
example. Finance talk is not hard. In fact, you are
probably already doing this without realising it.
Needs vs Wants
It is not always easy to differentiate between needs
and wants, even for an adult. So it is even more
difficult for a child to do so. The best example of this
is to talk to the kids so they understand that buying
food to eat is a need while buying a new Barbie doll
is a want. Needs and wants can be different from one
person to the next. It is personal, and sometimes a
very grey area to identify. Having a conversation is a
good start. Play a game. Give the kids a list of items
and see which ones they think are the needs and
which ones are wants.
Source of money
Ask the children where money comes from, and you
may be surprised by their answers. It is important for
children to understand from young age that money
doesnt come from swiping the card at Coles (Gee
mumyou are getting paid for shopping here!) or
from a machine on the wall. Money comes from
doing a job. You could be a stay at home parent
caring for your children that is work a 24/7 job for
many mums and dads. Allocate kids a task, and pay
them for it is a good start. For fun, you can even
introduce the negotiation concept with it.
Have fun playing needs vs wants More tips to
come next month!

A. The tides are a fight between the earth
and the moon. All water tends to flow
towards the moon, because there is no
water on the moon, and nature abhors a

fight

Baseball Etiquette.
At one point during a game, the coach
slowly walked up to one of his 9-year-old
baseball players, paused, then asked,
Do you understand what a baseball team
is? What cooperation for the team is?
The boy nodded slowly in the affirmative.
Do you understand that what matters is
not always whether we win or lose, but
how we play together as a team?
The little boy nodded 'yes'.
So, the coach continued, : I'm sure then
you understand, when an out is called,
y o u s h ou l d n ' t a r g u e , c u r s e ,
attack the umpire, or call him a peckerhead, dickhead or asshole. Does that not
make sense to you?
The little boy again nodded 'yes'.
Not stopping there he went on, And
when I take you out of the game so
another boy gets a chance to play in the
game, it's not good sportsmanship to call
your coach a dumb ass or shithead is

it?
