The Gulf Oil Spill –Should the World be Concerned?

By A. True Ott, PhD

”We forget that the water cycle and the life cycle are one. If we go on the way we
have, the fault is our greed and if we are not willing to change, we will disappear from the face
of the globe, to be replaced by the insect.”----- Jacques Yves Cousteau

“Andt hes econdangelsounded, andas it were a great mountain BURNING WITH FIRE was

the media...it could create mass panic if people really knew..and it still might if it does blow apart
because there won't be any booms, any sucker hats or tubes or anything else that is going to do jack shit
to stop it...it'll be like trying to blow a tidal wave away with a soda straw and everyone become well
aware of just how weak and puny Man is compared to the forces of nature. If the well does cut loose? we
are talking thousands and thousands of square miles of toxic crud....I'm not even sure the well drilling

the men working there realize they are probably in one the most hazardous work zones they have ever
been in...I don't think it's an ELE or something of that order, but we don't need to be wiped out to be

the planet –the whale –depends entirely on healthy blooms of plankton to survive. Moreover,
plankton bloom cycles, combined with healthy ocean currents (and pH factors) determine the

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has been studying the acidity of the sea for
decades, and produced this map. The acid/alkaline balance of the ocean is not constant as it
changes from place to place, from a low of 7.8 to a high of 8.2 (just like human blood as a
matter of fact). Low pH (but still alkaline) is associated with upwelling areas of high productivity.
In a given place, it is not constant either as it is higher at the end of the day compared with the
end of the night ( sunlightaf f

water). When human blood is contaminated with poison, it causes the pH balance to drop
below critical levels, oxygen ceases to be carried in the lifeblood, and if not corrected soon,
DEATH (i.e. the lack of oxygen) is the inevitable result. (Try injecting a mixture of crude oil and

and see how quickly death occurs.)

So, how does all this affect land ecosystems, one may ask? It is simply because the relative
health of the oceans ultimately will determine the amount of rain and snow precipitation that
blesses the land with food crops. Can you see how important healthy oceans are to all life on
planet earth?

Could oil spills make hurricanes more destructive, rains more torrential, and droughts
more pronounced? What an outrageous thought, and most est abli

likely scoff at the idea! However, let's follow the logic stream. In recent years, there have indeed
been more hurricanes and stronger ones too. There have also been more torrential rains and
massive flooding in America andt hewor l

We know that all storms (low pressure ridges) hurricanes and typhoons are formed because the
oceanwat erwar ms,andmov eswitht he“ currents”whi chi nturnallows more water volume to
evaporate more quickly, ( causing “l

,f or
whatever reason, the water becomes much warmer, resulting in much greater water being
evaporated, thus feeding storms such as hurricanes with more intense thermal energy.
Oceanogr apher shav epr ovent hata“ natural”gas called dimethyl sulphide (DMS) is produced
by decomposing plankton, and that the sea can quite suddenly become sick when plankton
massively dies. This in turn greatly compounds the solar energy to these dead microbes,
thereby suddenly producing more DMS in a downward spiral. This in turn makes more storm
clouds, much more rapidly and with much bigger droplets. It is accepted fact that that when the
s ea’
sl oopcur rent
sar ewarmed by only a few degrees, massive storm systems are the result.
This, at least to me, explains why the Gulf Coast has experienced more powerful hurricanes and
increased volume of them in recent years. I understand that this sounds somewhat bizarre, but
we can't dismiss this idea. Clearly, the planet's processes are interlinked, that much is certain.

The diagram below shows how closely the DMS molecule resembles that of water, and its role
in storm formation. Together with their negative and positive polarities, transparent water vapour
molecules attach to the DMS molecule, forming water droplets. So DMS promotes cloud
formation and heavier droplets, which of course in turn causes heavier rains and hurricanes.
Cloud formation also cools the planet, thereby counteracting the warming effect of greenhouse
gases –once again linked to decomposing plankton cycles as opposed to carbon emissions
from cars and factories.

So, if this massive oil spill is not contained quickly, expect it to kill a tremendous amount of

storms, followed by years of drought and famine. As Cousteau warned, the GREED of the oil-
consuming world may well ring the death knell for billions of people.
