Abstract

TARGET DETECTING DEFENSE HUMANOID SNIPER

In this paper, a new method of defence system using image processing has been
implemented. It is mainly focussed on bringing out the best target tracking technology. The
defence humanoid is designed to overcome foreign attacks at the country border. The defence
system consists of two modules- control unit and humanoid unit. The control unit has a laptop
in which Graphical User Interface (GUI) using Processing IDE has been implemented.
Image processing is done and the control signal is transmitted. The humanoid unit receives
the signal from the control unit, at a remote location and responds according to the processed
control signal. The control signal has been processed by image processing technique. The
humanoid does image processing by the combination of edge detection, scale space analysis,
thermal image processing and virtual 3D sizing in 2D image processing and colour detection.
The humanoid, works in three modes- (1) Auto Targeting and Auto Shooting (Fully
Autonomous).(2)Auto Targeting and Manual Shooting.(Semi-Autonomous).(3)Manual
Targeting and Manual Shooting (User Oriented).

INTRODUCTION
Visual tracking is one of the most important field of computer vision. It has immense
number of applications ranging from surveillance to hi-fi military applications. The

TARGET DETECTING DEFENSE HUMANOID SNIPER

objective of visual tracking is to associate target objects in consecutive video frames.

This system is a fully automatic and advanced system for defence forces that can be
used in remote border areas where human existence can be difficult. This project aims
at preventing border disputes and insurgencies which are frequent across many border
regions of the countries. This project is based on defence application, where target
detection through image processing has been performed in multiple ways and fused to
determine an absolute target over which a non-lethal sniper gunshot is fired. Instead of
the sniper gun any other weapon can be installed. These snipers are especially
developed for preventing enemy threats at the border by replacing border soldiers.
These snipers can be installed in tall towers and huge trees at regular intervals, covering
the entire border terrain. The humanoid consists of two units- the Control Unit, which
is in the control room and another is the Humanoid Unit. The control unit may be
located at a remote location and can control the humanoid by passing control signals
through wired serial modem.
Many serial communication systems were originally designed to transfer data over relatively
large distances through some sort of data cable.
The term "serial" most often refers to the RS232 port on the back of the original IBM PC,
often called "the" serial port, and "the" serial cable designed to plug into it, and the many
devices designed to be compatible with it.
Practically all long-distance communication transmits data one bit at a time, rather than in
parallel, because it reduces the cost of the cable. The cables that carry this data (other than
"the" serial cable) and the computer ports they plug into are usually referred to with a more
specific name, to reduce confusion. Keyboard and mouse cables and ports are almost
invariably serial -- such as PS/2 port and Apple Desktop Bus and USB.
The cables that carry digital video are almost invariably serial -- such as coax cable plugged
into a HD-SDI port, a webcam plugged into a USB port or Firewire port, Ethernet
cable connecting an IP camera to a Power over Ethernet port, FPD-Link, etc. Other such
cables and ports, transmitting data one bit at a time, include Serial ATA, Serial SCSI, Ethernet
cable plugged into Ethernet ports, the Display Data Channel using previously reserved pins of
the VGA connector or the DVI port or the HDMI port.

For the past fourteen years, Processing has promoted software literacy, particularly within the
visual arts, and visual literacy within technology. Initially created to serve as a software
sketchbook and to teach programming fundamentals within a visual context, Processing has
also evolved into a development tool for professionals. The Processing software is free and
open source, and runs on the Mac, Windows, and GNU/Linux platforms.
Processing continues to be an alternative to proprietary software tools with restrictive and
expensive licenses, making it accessible to schools and individual students. Its open source
status encourages the community participation and collaboration that is vital to Processings
growth. Contributors share programs, contribute code, and build libraries, tools, and modes to
extend the possibilities of the software. The Processing community has written more than a
hundred libraries to facilitate computer vision, data visualization, music composition,
networking, 3D file exporting, and programming electronics.
.The capabilities of Processing are extended with Libraries and Tools. Libraries make it
possible for sketches to do things beyond the core Processing code. There are hundreds of
libraries contributed by the Processing community that can be added to your sketches to
enable new things like playing sounds, doing computer vision, and working with advanced
3D geometry. Tools extend the PDE to help make creating sketches easier by providing
interfaces for tasks like selecting colors.

First the camera will pick up the image or video of the object or target then it will send the
image to the control unit(laptop) . From the laptop arduino wil be connected and it will locate
the centroid . three servo motor are used one for the triggering and two for tilt and pan.The
arduino will set the servo motor according to the centroid .From the servo motor gun will be
attached and it will fire on target or object.
The Arduino Uno has a number of facilities for communicating with a computer, another
Uno board, or other microcontrollers. The ATmega328 provides UART TTL (5V) serial
communication, which is available on digital pins 0 (RX) and 1 (TX). An ATmega16U2 on
the board channels this serial communication over USB and appears as a virtual com port to
software on the computer. The 16U2 firmware uses the standard USB COM drivers, and no
external driver is needed. However, on Windows, a .inf file is required. The Arduino Software
(IDE) includes a serial monitor which allows simple textual data to be sent to and from the
board. The RX and TX LEDs on the board will flash when data is being transmitted via the
USB-to-serial chip and USB connection to the computer (but not for serial communication on
pins 0 and 1).The ATmega328 has 32 KB (with 0.5 KB occupied by the bootloader). It also
has 2 KB of SRAM and 1 KB of EEPROM (which can be read and written with
the EEPROM library).

Literature review
There already exist many systems of target tracking and destruction which are currently
in use by defense forces of many countries are as summarized below.
ADUNOK-M, Belarus
The Adunok-M robot is equipped with a remote operated weapon station armed with a 7.62
mm machine gun. The station is used for remote operating by fire facilities when
subdivisions conduct defending and ambushing actions, blocking enemy's force and facilities,
protecting important objects from any chose fire position on soil. The Adunok-M electronics
allows detecting targets in day and at night in any weather. The software allows targeting and
firing by an operator or in standalone mode. The Adunok- M is capable of engaging and
infantry at a distance of up to 800 meters.

1.1.2 Super Aegis 2, South Korea

Manufactured indigenously by South Korean military hardware manufacturer DoDAMM in
2010. The Super Aegis 2 is an automated gun tower that can find and lock on to a humansized target in pitch darkness at a distance of up to 1.36 miles (2.2 kilometers). It uses a 35x
zoom CCD camera with 'enhancement feature' for bad weather, in conjunction with a dual
FOV, autofocus Infra-Red sensor, to pick out targets. Then either with a standard 12.7mm
caliber machine-gun, a 40mm automatic grenade launcher upgrade, or whatever other

weapons system you want to bolt on to it, including surface-to-air missiles it fires onto the
designated target. A laser range finder helps to calibrate aim, and a gyroscopic stabilizer unit
helps correct both the video system's aim and the direction of the guns after recoil pushes
them off-target.
Samsung SGR-1, South Korea
Manufactured by a South Korean company Samsung Techwin for the defense forces of
South Korea in 2006 to protect the borders of the country from North Korea.
The SGR-1 has a 5.5mm machine gun and a 40mm grenade launcher - although needs a
human operator to give it the go ahead to fire. The machine-gun wielding robots, built by
Samsung, have heat and motion detectors to identify potential targets more than 2 miles
away.
