Aim:
1. To create a solid object out of the closed hull surface formed using the
surface modelling procedure in EX_4.
2. To carry out Boolean operations on the solids created (e.g cutting out of
the bow thruster tunnel)
3. To subdivide the solid hull into different compartments.
Introduction:
The Solid Modeller enables the designer to create a solid model of a marine
vehicle. For this Paramarine uses the industry-standard Parasolid modelling
library. Parasolid provides a very robust and flexible solid modeller that allows
geometry to be created, manipulated and transferred to and from other
packages. 3D solid shapes can be formed by various operations using sheet, wire
and point objects or by trimming different bounds against each other. Boolean
operations such as unite and subtract are supported. 3D solid shapes can be
subdivided to model the internal subdivision of the vehicle. The subdivision is
performed in a hierarchical manner to maintain model consistency. As all of the
modelling is abstract, unconventional craft can easily be modelled. For surface
ships there is the ability to sew sheet patches together to form sheet or solid
body results. Complex hull forms, superstructure and subdivision can rapidly be
created for use in analysis. For submarines there is the additional ability to
construct pressure hull(s), external freeflood areas and appendages.
Procedure:
1. As a continuation of the previous exercise, insert a geometric place holder
named Hull_Solid.
2. Under this place holder, insert a patch_solid object and under the patches
folder of this object, copy and paste the port hull with port deck and
starboard hull with starboard deck surfaces. The result would now give a
solid formed by considering the hull and deck surfaces as boundaries a
shown in Figure 1.
3. To model the bow thrusters tunnel, insert another geometric place holder
named Bowthruster and insert two points point_port and point_starboard
with coordinates (93,10,5) and (93,-10,5).
4. Insert a solid_body object and under operations select the cylinder
option. Direct the point 1 and point 2 to the two defined points and enter
radius as 2m to produce a right circular cylinder whose end faces are
centered about the two points with a radius of 2m as show in Figure 2.
5. Copy and paste as copy-of the result of the patch_solid object and then
using subtract operation, select the tool as the bow thrusters tunnel to
subtract it from the hull solid to obtain result as shown in Figure 3.
6. To model the superstructure, insert a geometric place holder named
superstructure. Insert another geometric place holder named construction
under the superstructure place holder and insert 2 plane objects named
deck_level_plane and superstructure_deck_level_plane. Use the plane
orthogonal operation to set these planes as Z planes at a distance of 25m
and 35m from the origin.
