How to create NOUNS?

There are a lot of ways to build nouns!

Nouns may be formed from verbs,


adjectives or other nouns. The
forms are often Latin or Greek in
origin.

1 VERB NOUN
Verbs can be changed into nouns if you add suffixes!
Suffixes are added at the _____________ of the noun.

5 NOUN FORMS ENDING IN -ing


Some nouns ending in ing are confused with gerund forms.
What is the difference?
Noun Word Form
A noun form may end in -ing. To test if it is a noun, put an article before it
and/or a prepositional phrase after it.

The landing of the airplane was not difficult.


The passengers enjoyed the landing of the aircraft.
The taking of of the airplane was not difficult.

Gerund Word Form


A gerund expresses the meaning of an activity. An article is not used before a
gerund.

Landing the airplane was not difficult.


The pilot enjoyed landing the airplane.
Taking of was not difficult.
