Pratiche
concrete residuali, generanti frazioni, ostruzioni,
doppi, strascichi, scoperte.
elementi, materializzandoli tramite diverse forme
servizio bilingue. Svuotata da qualsiasi elemento
espressivo, la trasmissione in realt la traduzione
pedissequa, sottoforma di didascalie, dellesperienza performativa raccontata a terzi. Nessun intento
azioni potenziali, effettive, immaginarie, replicabili
o fittizie.

The work investigates the falter of language and communication starting
from the exercise and action. It is a gesture "duplexing" capable of modifying the points of view of the work and, consequently, the interpretive perspectives of everyday life. The picture tells the traces of lived moments in
areas previously used but now abandoned.

critical notes
The work aims to investigate the processes that lead to the interpretation
of the reality that surrounds us, and that for this there is familiar, at the
moment when it is reproduced through towards the creation of errors, gaps
and randomness. Starting from creation of "clandestine performances",
which generate reproductions of parallel realities, it is to produce a communication alternative minimum, capable of giving the viewer an indefinite
trace of lived experience.

"Fine a se stesso" is the result of a action made four hands by the duo AFTERALL.
The performative operation starts with a suggestion born following the recovery of a letter
written in Brooklyn (NY) by Madeline Jordan, dictated by her mother Philomenia de
Francisco. The letter, dated January 9, 1975, was addressed to Giuliana Di Francesco of
Qualiano (NA) with prayer of reading by her daughter Maria Esposito.
It is a intermittently and non-linear communication, in which the sender and the recipient
would be unable to communicate each other, because of their status of illiterate, if it was not
tank to the mediation of their daughters.
The operation developed by AFTERALL is to repeat several times the act of transcription of
the letter, copying the pages through the use of carbon paper.
The result is a new and additional transit in the communication of the informations.
A transmission in which the signs tend to get lost and the meanings to be kept and faded
into the recesses of carbon paper.
This work explores the contradictions of language and communication using the exercise
and action. The transcription of the words, which they overlap one on top of carbon paper,
has the ability to create a communication ended in itself, recognizable only in the intimacy
of the family context. The transition from a semiotic code to another and from one form to
another of the transmission creates a series of cognitive gaps, considered by the artists as
" propulsive errors" able to generate new meanings and new contexts.
The research of Afterall focuses on the analysis of the indeterminate and gray portions of
the narrated experiences. These portions generated by the contingent passage between
different languages and communicative registers. Fine a se stesso is a work that explores
the capabilities, limitations, and the perception of any communication through the tools of
translation, language, gesture and sign.

ripetizioni...repetita iuvant.

The eye of Balzac, Phenomenic <experience of border> now realistic now visionary, like
Calvino defines it, it is in the centre of the installation of the duo afterall. The polymorph vision
of eyes and of soul of the French writer insert, this way, in the space and time lived by him to
define and draw it again. Like in the descriptions by Balzac, the work of afterall, a peep-hole
installed in the park of the castle, < stresses, enlarges, blows up, weeds out, wides, shadows,
brightens, moves away or reconcile men and things> (Thophile Gautier).
Metaphor of the power of the by Balzac work and of his intensity of vision, the lens reveal the
present prospective of the absolute writer.
"Lessia, 2009. A big lens, an 1 meter-diameter eye, metaphoric of Balzac, overlooks from the
historical building of the Castle of Rivalta to define the space again. The work of the artistic
Neapolitan duo is a <production>, an alienated variety and almost oniric of the effective reality which the spectator lives while he enters in the park of the residence. The audiences look
observes the context which suddenly has another point of view: unfocused, wavy, enlarged.
The work Afterall highlights the attention in looking the world in a typical Balzachian way, a swinging of the look between realism and visionariety.

From Lo Stupore by S. Petrosino, Interlinea Edizioni:
...In the everyday life we occupy continuously ourselves doing something,
we have constantly to do with something, but always within a sort of indifferent blindness by comparison with its splendor, not having ever time for
uniquess of this shining and for the shining of this uniqueness. The experience of amazement represents consequently the break of daily life,
without escaping from reality; here theres no ecstasy or rapture, but indeed the institution of a relationship more internal and intimate with something which now appears in the evidence and the intimacy of its- being justthat extra something...

A work of the invasion of the town.
A reflection on the stillness of thoughts and of movements. The simplicity
if the idea and the depth of the meaning attributable to it, makes it of great
impact.

description
Invited by Aporema, we conducted the "Snapshot" workshop at the "Serra"
of Villa Pignatelli Museum and Nitsch Museum of Naples.
The 'waste', the 'residual', the circumstantial were the elements of interest
in this attempt to annotation 'and 'visual anamnesis' of the Nitsch Museum.
We chose the recording tool Polaroid, because, in the time in which the
digital has made possible the production of an image increasingly precise,
the device Polaroid has discontinued perception physics of the image
itself <you could say that the digital has a grid, a small, singular unit you
come across at some point. The analog does not have an endpoint. It can
be pulled apart and cut into smaller pieces. There always remains an even
smaller piece>
Considering the suggestion of particular processuality as an opportunity for
knowledge, exercise and comparison of critical thinking and considering
the entire time frame of the project "Snapshot",conditioned by the alternation of meeting places and of its duration, we proceeded with the participants along a path of experiences so-called 'relational aesthetics': creating
conditions that allowed a period of withdrawal, decompression, to a haptic
observation' of space.
precisa, il dispositivo Polaroid ha interrotto quella percezione fisica dellimmagine stessa <you could say that the digital has a grid, a small, singular unit you come across at some point. The analog does not have an
endpoint. It can be pulled apart and cut into smaller pieces. There always
remains an even smaller piece>.
osservazione aptica' dello spazio.
Intervenendo tra ispessimenti e assottigliamenti, in 'zone interstiziali', dove
mani sul dato, diventando 'atto e oggetto involontario'.

Afterall experiment with the linguistic, communicative and striking possibilities of the installation in his several declinations. Their works interact
with the urban reality, take and use the architectonic space modifying it and
rendering it varied, colorful, modified. This way, burning shades of color and
sounds from human body translate into beats which emit from the faade of an architecture (Beautiful
Decline, 2008), or an expanse of salt sweeps away the town and paralyses
placating the physic frenzy and reflecting the possibilities of the mind and of
its thoughts (Sottosale, 2007). The use of materials of great visual impact
and often an attentive aesthetic choice, pilot the options of the Neapolitan
duo , who make the urban space a privilege place of their research and reflection. Surface and support on which building the work of art. The projects of
afterall, their titles, clear an interest in social, political and cultural problems, in a fast superficial reality which it seems always to need elements
which capture and block for a while the unrelenting daily rhythm.

Afterall creates mobile structures, liquid and having a vividly introspective vocabulary, aiming at identitying and dismantling the secret consequences of commercialization. Diluting the object and the mass language in an
unifying formal ability, afterall aims at opening the common matter between a pop style and humanistic impulse that researches and scans the possibilities of language and meaning in the social symptoms. Monitoring the
districts of the apparent and the ordinary, afterall face things with a mindset thatb makes the work in progress the home of ethic and aesthetic preoccupations that are able to regenerate the creative process through installations which decontextualize, disassemble, deviate and disturb the material of choice in order to recognize and favour its meaning thanks to refined () that redetermine space and qualify a new audio-visual. material
and textual system.

materica, testuale.

quartapittura
The quartapittura was composed by students and faculty professorship of the fourth
painting of the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, and also by artists formed in this
school. Quartapittura was an experimental laboratory, created in 1994 and ended in
late 2006, coordinated by Nini Sgambati and Franz Iandolo and curated by Esc.
Quartapittura searched, investigating and experimenting with new forms of mass
culture, assuming a transcendent and sublime from its being equal: the freedom and
creativity as a result of an agreement, the relationship with the other as a possible
poetic practice.
"In laboratories Quartapittura, teachers and students in collaboration with former students, artists and outside engineers, played their research on the potential
of communication and expression of collective phenomena. Quartapittura was a
place, but above all an idea that worked for many years, producing experimental
work, where often the subjects came together and gave power to the project and
the realization... F.Iandolo
F.Iandolo
