COURSE OUTLINE

GOALS: This is a listening and speaking course for students at the low intermediate level. By
the end of this course, it should be easier for you to describe yourself and other people, places,
and events, and to talk about the past and the future. You will also learn and practice expressions
that will help you communicate better in a variety of situations.
Your ability to understand descriptions, opinions, directions, conversations, and short lectures
should also improve. Besides focusing on listening and speaking, this course will also help you
improve your grammar skills through explanations and activities. Additionally, this course will
help you become more familiar with American culture through listening to conversations,
watching videos, and participating in discussions.
MATERIALS: The assigned textbook for this class is:
Interchange 2 Student's Book, (4th Edition) by Jack C. Richards
Full Contact Package with Self-study DVD-ROM
We recommend you buy a small notebook for writing down new vocabulary words.
You will have a lot of handouts in this class. Therefore, we suggest you buy a folder or a
3-ring binder to keep all of your handouts organized! J
YOU MUST HAVE NEW BOOKS!
METHODS: In this class, you will practice listening to each other, to recordings, and to
teachers. You will listen to recordings on CDs, textbook-related videos, Internet resources, and
movies. You will practice speaking through oral drills, pronunciation practice, short
conversations, discussions, role-plays, presentations (with a partner and individually) and other
activities. We will go to the computer lab once each week to use the Internet and the language
software that is available there.
You will use the workbook pages of your textbook to practice at home, and you will have other
listening and speaking homework, including a log, every week. Throughout the term, you will
work closely with your classmates in small and large group discussions. In this way, you will all
learn from each other.
ATTENDANCE POLICY: If you are 15 minutes late, you will be marked absent. If you are
late (less than 15 minutes) three times, this will equal one absence.
Students may be marked absent for not being prepared to participate in class and/or for not
participating during class.
Examples of non-participation include:
not being prepared for important class activities such as presentations or leadership roles
not having the necessary homework completed for a participatory class activity such as a
peer review for a presentation
sitting in class but not participating in class activities
not having new books
not bringing books to class

When a teacher notices instances of such behavior, the student will be warned the first time and
marked absent after that. Students are withdrawn from the Tutorium upon the 10th absence.
Students who are withdrawn for non-participation may not be allowed to re-enroll.
EVALUATION: You will receive formal evaluations in the middle of the course (midterms)
and at the end of the course (finals). You will receive a grade of S (Satisfactory) or
U (Unsatisfactory).

A student who successfully completes 025 can, within 1 or 2 hearings, demonstrate
