Background of the Study
Agriculture is the primary livelihood of most of the constituents of barangay
Muladbucad Pequeo which is located in the rural heartland of Guinobatan,
Albay. It is bounded on the north by Muladbucad Grande and on the south by
Doa Tomasa. The barangay is composed of 480 households, 260 of which
derived their income from farming. Their standard of living has been
dependent on increase in productivity of agricultural lands, particularly rice
fields.
The most renowned symbol of agriculture is rice which is a basic necessity
for every Filipinos. Rice plays an important economic role in society to be
consumed as a means of subsistence. However, the prices of such
commodities are constantly rising primarily due to shortage and inefficiency,
causing hardships to rice-consuming households.

This article provides information on current rice consumption patterns in the
United States and the dietary intake of rice consumers in general, as well as
rice consumers analyzed by income.
The results provide information useful to the design of food programs and
nutrition education.
