Oil to create a less-greasy, smooth product that will make a great hand, body and facial moisturizer. Water and oil do
not naturally combine. Oil will sit on top of the water. The only way to combine it is by emulsification, or blending
it to force the water to combine with the oil, much like making mayonnaise. They will combine easier and stay
together forever if you have an emulsifier. True emulsifiers are not natural. Even the plant-based emulsifiers are
highly processed. Beeswax can be combined with borax to make a true emulsifier. I am not really a fan of borax and
would rather not use it. You can use beeswax as an emulsifier on its own. It is more of a mechanical emulsification
(ie. it might eventually separate over time)A cream/lotion can be successfully used to deliver and hold nutrients and
medications on the skin's surface. Both the oil and water components can be used as a carrier. The skin has a limited
capacity to absorb many oils and some chemical compounds and is responsive to surface medications such as herbal
extracts. The efficacy of the lotion/cream is directly related to the quality of the added ingredients, their
concentration and how suited and how well either the oil or water phases deliver and hold that ingredient on the
skin's surface and facilitate its absorption into the skin. How the herbal extracts are prepared is crucial in
determining their efficacy in a cream.
What ingredients can go into a cream?
As previously mentioned, a cream consists of two basic components being an oil phase and an water phase.
Into either of these two phases can be respectively added oil and water soluble ingredients according to the intended
functions of the planned cream. Examples of some more commonly added ingredients are detailed below.
2015 Sep 30, Wed, 9:09 AM - Bare2chic: Oil (and fat) phase
Components.
This phase usually consists of between 15% and 30% of a cream by weight and holds the key to the cream's texture
and cosmetic quality. The bulk of this fraction consists of the emulsifying agent and a mix of vegetable oils and fats.
Below is a brief outline of the more commonly used oils and fats.
Vegetable oils - these are divided here into five basic types:
Saturated or fixed oil or fat.E.g. Coconut oil
- saturated oil from the coconut palm.E.g. Jojoba oil
- natural saturated fluid wax extracted from the Jojoba seed.
Mono unsaturated oils (omega 9).E.g. Olive oil
Poly unsaturated oils (omega 6).E.g. Almond oil
- oil with omega 9 and omega 6 fatty acids.E.g. Grape seed and Sunflower oils
- oils high in omega 6 with a little omega 9 fatty acids.
Poly unsaturated oils (omega 3).
E.g. Flax seed oil - high in omega 3 fatty acids. The most susceptible group to oxidation
Specialised oils.
E.g. Evening primrose and Borage seed oils - contain high levels of GLA (Gamma-linolenic Acid).
Animal oils and fats.Lard (pig fat) and other animal fats have fallen out of fashion, being mostly replaced by the
more cosmetically acceptable and readily available vegetable oils.
Emu oil extracted from the liver area of the Emu and is being used increasingly as a therapeutic agent for
inflammatory conditions involving pain.Mutton bird oil is extracted from the gullet of juvenile Shearwater birds and
consists of the oil from digested fish. It has a limited availability to southern Australia.
Fish oils.
Cod liver and other fish oils are high in omega 3 fatty acids including DHA and EPA.
Other oil phase components:
Fragrant essential oils (e.g. Lavender oil and Peppermint oil).
Herbal oil infusions (e.g. Calendula flowers infused in Olive oil).
Emulsifiers
Antioxidants
Emulsifiers.
Also known as surfactants, these are usually organic salts with a straight molecular structure where one end is water
loving (hydrophilic) and the other oil loving (lipophilic).
The commonly available emulsifying agent called Emulsifying wax. It is derived mostly from the chemical
manipulation of palm oil and the variations in this process
result in differing properties in the Emulsifying waxes available. It is usually used in a cream at a concentration of
6% - 15% by weight.
Antioxidants
Antioxidants "resist" the oxidation of oils in the presence of air and especially light by sacrificing themselves to
oxidation thus protecting the chemical bonds in the oil. They can extend the shelf life of oils.
They are especially needed in un-saturated oils (most vegetable oils) but are not required for oils such as paraffin oil.
Virgin (unprocessed) vegetable oils contain their own natural antioxidants. These are mostly removed when the oil is
processed.
Natural antioxidants:
- Vitamin E is extracted from vegetable oils. It is available as vitamin E capsules and as a liquid concentrate.
- Rosemary frond extract is available as a commercial product called Amiox. It is used at a concentration of 2 - 4
drops per 100mL/gm of cream.

well after it thickens), transfer it to whatever container youll be storing it in.

Things You'll Need
2/3 cup distilled or spring water
1/3 cup aloe vera gel
5 drops essential oil of choice
3/4 cup almond oil
1/3 cup cocoa butter
1/4 tsp. lanolin
1 oz. grated beeswax
Step 1
Combine the distilled or spring water, aloe vera gel and essential oil in a cup. Set aside.
2015 Oct 1, Thu, 10:43 AM - Bare2chic: <Media omitted>
2015 Oct 1, Thu, 10:43 AM - Bare2chic: Step 2
Combine the almond oil, cocoa butter, lanolin and beeswax in another cup. Place the cup in the center of a small
saucepan filled with about 2 inches of water.
2015 Oct 1, Thu, 10:44 AM - Bare2chic: <Media omitted>
2015 Oct 1, Thu, 10:44 AM - Bare2chic: Step 3
Place the saucepan over medium-low heat until the water comes to a gentle boil. Continue heating until the
ingredients in the cup just melt, then remove from the heat.
2015 Oct 1, Thu, 10:45 AM - Bare2chic: <Media omitted>
2015 Oct 1, Thu, 10:45 AM - Bare2chic: Step 4
Pour the oil and wax mixture into a blender, and allow them to cool to room temperature. If
you're short on time, place the blender container in the refrigerator for 2 to 3 minutes to hasten the process. Don't
allow the mixture to become too hard, however. It should be thick, creamy and semi-solid.
2015 Oct 1, Thu, 10:46 AM - Bare2chic: <Media omitted>
2015 Oct 1, Thu, 10:46 AM - Bare2chic: Step 5
Turn the blender on the highest speed once the mixture has cooled. Pour the water and aloe vera mixture into the
center vortex in a thin, slow, steady drizzle.
2015 Oct 1, Thu, 10:47 AM - Bare2chic: <Media omitted>
2015 Oct 1, Thu, 10:47 AM - Bare2chic: Step 6
Turn off the blender when most of the water has been added and the motor begins to sputter. The cream should look
thick and white. Add the remaining water, and beat by hand until well-combined.
2015 Oct 1, Thu, 10:49 AM - Bare2chic: <Media omitted>
2015 Oct 1, Thu, 10:49 AM - Bare2chic: Step 7
Pour the aloe face cream into glass or plastic jars, secure the lids in place and store in a cool, dry place when not in
use. For best results, use within six weeks. Store any excess in the refrigerator for up to 3 months.
Warnings
Use tap water only if absolutely necessary. It can introduce bacteria and cause mold growth on your face cream over
time, although the cream should stay fresh for several weeks before this happens. Use grapeseed or apricot kernel oil
instead of almond oil, and coconut oil instead of cocoa butter, if necessary.
This cream is very concentrated and requires only a small amount at each application. To use, dab a tiny bit on the
end of your finger and gently massage into your face once or twice daily, preferably just after washing with a gentle
cleanser.

2015 Oct 6, Tue, 11:43 AM - Bare2chic: Add the liquid oils to the melted oils. Adding the liquid oils to the melted
oils helps to bring the temperature down. If we were to measure out all of the oils (liquid and solid) and then melt
the temperature of the total mixture would be hot and wed have to wait to bring the temps down. It is unnecessary
to heat the liquid oils along with the solid ones.

Measures:
2g Kojic Acid
2g distilled water
1kg Melt and Pour base
8-10 drops of Papaya Flavour
0.5g of Titanium dioxide
5-10 drops of Orange colorant
Steps:
1. Dissolve Kojic Acid in distilled water.
2. Melt base.
3. Let the base cool a little.
4. Add kojic solution to melted base.
5. Incorporate.
6. Add Titanium dioxide, Flavour, then colorant.
7. Allow to Harden.
Always remember:
Kojic Acid tends to oxidize. Always keep the soap in room temperature. Allow moisture to lock in the soap therefore
refusing to allow humidity on it.
Kojic Acid tends to give orange-brown discolorations on the edges of the soap that's why soap companies that offer
Kojic color them
There is another type of kojic that sells in the market. It's called: Kojic Dipalmitate. Its much more expensive than
Kojic Acid but it does not give that awful brown discoloration. It is oil soluble and blends easily

The amount of base oil needed will vary depending on how much soap you wish to make. The amount of oil used
should not exceed half the capacity of your double boiler. However, those who wish to make a larger amount of soap
generally process it in batches.
2
Oven roast the plantain skins. In order to ensure consistent texture, oven roast or sun dry the plantain skins (or
alternative ingredient)
3
Burn the plantain skins. Now, burn the plantain skins (or alternative ingredients), creating an ash that will be leached
to release its component parts.
Plantain skins are typically used in Africa, but plantains are rare in many other countries. Soap makers typically
replace them with cocoa pods, palm tree leaves, or shea tree bark. Often, a combination of these ingredients is used.
The amount of skins and pods needed will vary depending on how much soap you are making and how concentrated
you would like the black ingredients to be in your soap.
The ashes contain potassium hydroxide, a precursor to many solid and liquid soaps.
4
Stir the ashes in water. Add the ashes to 2 cups of warm, distilled water and stir until they are dissolved.
Add more ashes or water as needed until the liquid is as dark and concentrated as you would like.
Bring the water to a boil, then lower the heat.
Once the ashes have dissolved completely, remove the ash/water mixture from heat, and strain it through a fine
strainer, setting aside the remnants.
5
Heat the base oil. Using a double boiler, heat the base oil over low heat until it's melted and heated through.
6
Add the ash mixture. Pour the ashy liquid to the heated base oil, while stirring. Add more ashy liquid until you
achieve the desired shade of dark brown or black. Continue stirring over low heat until the liquid is smooth.
7
Add a scent agent (optional). If desired, add drops of essential oil, such as lavender, or dried plants, such as
chamomile. Traditional African black soap does not contain any additives, but some soap makers prefer to make
their own scented versions of the soap.
8
Remove liquid soap. As you continue stirring the mixture, a frothy, waxy substance will begin to form at the surface.
Scoop this liquid soap from the surface of the double boiler as it forms, continuing until all the water has boiled off.
Transfer it into molds.
9
Cure the soap. The soap must be left in the molds for up to two weeks to cure. This will allow the soap time to
solidify before use. The finished product will be solid, but malleable when pressed..
How to make black soap with additives:The first rule of the game is to make sure all ingredient are pure, raw and
organic
The second rule is for u to mix according to ur skin demand or desire
What u will need
Raw black soap (white/black) Lemon/lime,
How to mix dis ingredient
Step1:Take 1kg of black soap
Add 100mls of lemon/lime to soften

2015 Oct 14, Wed, 9:23 AM - Bare2chic: Starting on scrubs
2015 Oct 14, Wed, 9:25 AM - Bare2chic: Exfoliating Scrub
Recipe:
12parts orange peel powder or almond meal powder,
8parts granulated sugar
4parts liquid soap (preferrably unscented)
2parts jojoba oil
1part melted mango butter
1part sweet almondfragrance
Method
Combine the sugar and powder, set aside.
Mix all the other ingredients together except the butter.
Melt the butter and add to the ingredients.
Now blend it all together. Blend in fragrance and spoon mixture into jar(s).
Upon sitting, the ingredients may settle and oil will rise to the top so a [small] spoon serves to mix the ingredients
before use as well as a way to use the product without having to "scoop" it out with your fingers.
If you feel that mixture is too dry, you can adjust it by stirring in a very small amount of glycerin until you have the
desired consistency. Spoon out the desired amount and rub all over the hands, feet, or wherever, massaging into the
nail beds,
23
knuckes, heels, elbows, etc. When finished, rinse under warm water. you won't get a lather, but the soap in the
product will emulsify the oils, the water will dissolve the sugar, and it all rinses off ...leaving behind a thin film of
emollience. your skin will feel refreshed, moist, and smooth
24
25
Instructions:
To create your foaming scrub, you'lll start by pouring the sugar in a bowl. Next measure out the dry ingredients(the
powders) and add to the sugar. Mix thoroughly with a fork.
Now measure the liquid soap and add to the sugar. Measure out the lemongrass essential oil and add to the sugar,
soap and powders. Mix well with a fork until all ingredients
are thoroughly incorporated, then spoon into the container(s) of your choice.
To use, simply scoop out a dime sized amount and scrub between your damp hands. Then massage onto your face
and body in circular motion, rinse and pat dry.
This recipe creates a wonderful natural foaming scrub cleanser. However, if have sensitive skin, you may find that
the fruit peel powders, much like an alpha hydroxy peel, can cause temporary skin redness or light burning. This is
easily calmed by following up with a soothing natural facial moisturizer. However, if your skin is overly sensitive
omitting the lemon peel powder, reducing the lemongrass essential oil to 3ml

2015 Oct 17, Sat, 11:05 AM - Bare2chic: Morning all
2015 Oct 17, Sat, 11:05 AM - Bare2chic: No wahala
2015 Oct 17, Sat, 11:05 AM - Bare2chic: Preservatives
If you want to make an oil in water lotion (what we normally make), you must add a preservative. If you change
every millilitre of water in the lotion to being honey or aloe or a hydrosol, those are still water based ingredients and
you must add a preservative. If you make a body wash, shampoo, conditioner, or any other product that contains
water or a water like ingredient, you must add a preservative.
If you have a product into which someone might put their wet hands - for instance, a sugar scrub - you will need to
add a suitable preservative
Let's go back a step...What is a preservative? Preservatives help prevent microbial growth in our products, which
can cause separation of our emulsions, speed up rancidity of our oils and butters, and cause weird smells and
colours.
Vitamin E is NOT a preservative. It is an anti-oxidant that can help retard rancidity, but it is not a preservative that
will prevent microbial growth.
Citric acid is NOT a preservative. It can be used as an anti-oxidant that can help retard rancidity, but it will also mess
with the pH of your product (making it more acidic by 1 pH at 0.2% or so).
Essential oils are NOT preservatives. They might have some anti-microbial features (like eugenol), but none of them
have been proven to be effective preservatives in our products.
32
Cold process soap (made with sodium hydroxide) does not need a preservative. For other high pH products such as
liquid soap, generally if the pH is above 10 a preservative may not be required. If the pH is below 10, liquid germall
plus can be used
PRESERVING ANHYDROUS EG SCRUBS
If water may be introduced to the product or the product used in a humid bathroom then a preservative is advisable.if
trying to preserve an anhydrous product (including all oil+sugar/salt scrub) the oil soluble preservative will get
locked in the oils so will not reach any water, if water was introduced into the product. So if you added an oil
soluble preservative then that preservative will stay in the oils and not move over to where the water is located to
protect that water against bacteria and mould so would be useless. So contrary to what you may have read, we
should really use a water soluble preservative in an anhydrous product which means wed need to add an emulsifier
to get that preservative mixed in properly with the oils.
Liquid Germall Plus this effective and easy to use preservative INCI: Propylene Glycol (and) Diazolidinyl Urea
(and) Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate. Use 0.5% cool down phase good for emulsions e.g. lotions and aqueous
mixtures but cant be used in all oil creations.
Germaben II Another very effective preservative.. very good for hard to preserve products e.g. those with lots of
extracts. INCI Propylene Glycol (56%),Diazolidinyl Urea (30%), Methylparaben (11%), and Propylparaben (3%),
0.5% to 1% in the cool down phase. Water soluble. It is ready-to-use in emulsions with an oil phase of about 25% or
less and water soluble formulations.
Germaben II-E INCI: Propylene Glycol, Diazolidinyl Urea, Methylparaben, Propylparaben. A popular preservative,
Germaben II-E can be used in problem formulations without the need for additional co-preservatives.
Use Germaben II E (as opposed to Germaben II) when making emulsions that have 25% oil or more. Add slowly
after emulsification and prior to addition of fragrance. Or add to fragrance and add mixture slowly to finished
formulation after tempertature has dropped below 60C (140F). Use level 1%. It is a complete preservative in that it
covers microbial, fungus, and yeast.

Step 2: Put the blended fruit puree into a small bowl then stir in 2 tbsp. of unflavored gelatin to the mixture. The
gelatin serves two purposes. One, it will hold the mixture together to form a mask-like mixture, as opposed to
having the puree slip and slide all over, thus making a mess; and two, it will provide collagen to the skin, which
improves elasticity, helping wrinkles and large pores disappear.
Step 3: You can also opt to add 1 tsp. of honey to the mixture. The honey will soothe the skin and will replenish the
moisture lost during the peeling process.
Step 4: Heat the mixture on low for a minute or less, or until the gelatin dissolves. Afterwards you will have to
refrigerate the mixture until the gelatin becomes slightly firm.
Step 5: When the mixture has set, you can take it out of the refrigerator and apply it onto your face. Use your
fingers, but make sure theyre clean! Remember to avoid the eye and mouth areas.
Step 6: Let it settle on your skin for 10-15 minutes, as you can feel the tightening and rejuvenating effect.
Step 7: After 15 minutes, you can gently peel off the mask from your face. Check your face in the mirror you can
already see the results!
Step 8: You could top it all off with some moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated
2015 Oct 23, Fri, 8:45 AM - Bare2chic: Sugar Cane-based Glycolic Face Peel Recipe
Alternatively, sugar cane juice for your DIY glycolic acid peel. For this type of AHA peel, you will need the
following
Sugar cane juice
Lemon juice
Brown sugar
Pour 1/2cup of sugar cane in a bowl
Sugar cane contains glycolic acid, so using the the juice will do.
Add 1-2 tbsp. of brown sugar
Add1-2 tbsp. of lemon juice in the mix
This will make the peel more effective, as the skin will better absorb it with the acid mixed in. Whats more, lemon
juice is rich in vitamin C which helps whiten and detoxify the skin.
Apply on skin...leave for 15-20mins and peel off gently
Wash face and apply a thin layer of moisturizer afterwards to keep the skin supple and smooth.
2015 Oct 23, Fri, 8:46 AM - Bare2chic: BHA Chemical Face Peel:
Pour 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 1 cup of water into a glass mixing bowl. Mix the two ingredients together till
the baking soda is dissolved, and then keep it aside. This will act as a neutralizer for the acid.
Put about 1tablespoon of salicylic acid or 12 uncoated aspirin in a shallow dish. Aspirin is a source of salicylic acid,
a kind of BHA.
Sprinkle lemon juice over the salicylic acid/aspirins. The function of lemon juice is dual; one it provides the
exfoliating characteristic of an AHA, and two it also facilitates dissolving of aspirin tablets. Use a spoon to mash the
aspirin into a thin paste. If required, add in more lemon juice. This thin paste is your BHA chemical face peel.
With the help of your fingertips spread smoothly the peel over your face, avoiding eye area. Let the peel dry for 10
minutes, and then wipe it off with a cotton ball soaked in the baking soda neutralizer.
