The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

is typically a Holy Day of Obligation celebrated on August 15.
This year, because it falls on a Monday, the obligation to attend
mass is abrogated (dissolved). However, Fr. Floyd will celebrate
a mass this Monday at St. Michaels at 7:00am for those
wanting to observe the Holy Day.

From the Pastor

On my bicycle ride for exercise this morning (Wednesday) I was riding past
one of the care homes and noticed an ambulance out front. My first thought was
about who might be the one being transported to or from the facility; then I
noticed the lettering on the vehicle. The writing said Advanced Life Support.
Does this mean that they are 'advanced' in the way they give life support or are
they the 'support' for advanced life? My thoughts then turned to The One who is
the most advanced in supporting life, that would be the One who created us and
is with us every moment whether we realize it or not. God is with us just as the
air we breath even though we sometimes may have doubts or are too busy to be
noticing the eternal One that blankets us with grace. The second reading this
weekend speaks of being surrounded by a cloud of witnesses. My thoughts are
turning to the idea that the EMS team are the ones who are assistants to the
doctors and the saints are the assistants to God who remind us by their lives that
we have an advanced life support system at our beck and call. We pray to God as
we ask the saints to intercede for us, that is take our needs to God in a way that
we cannot imagine. A young person cannot know what it is like to live as an older
person and we cannot know what it is like to be in heaven. But not knowing does
not stop us from wanting to achieve our goal. We continue to live our faith and
follow in the footsteps of the saints. May the Lord bless us on our journey.

EMERGENCY PHONE NUMBER

If you look over at the left column where information is placed
you can see a new item; that would be an emergency number
for the rectory. For the most part, the 8717 number should be
good for most things, you may have to leave a message. If there
is something of more importance, including medical
emergencies that need to be taken care of in a more timely
manner, then the emergency number is the one to use. If it is a
medical emergency, you may call at any hour. Thank you, if
you have questions, don't hesitate to ask. Peace, Fr. Floyd

TOWN HALL MEETING

On Saturday, August 27th at 1:00 pm in the Girard Public
Library, a Town Hall meeting will be held. The meeting is
sponsored by the Family Policy Alliance, a part of James
Dobsons Focus on the Family. The theme of the meeting will
be voting and issues here in Kansas.

ORIGIN OF THE "HAIL, HOLY QUEEN"

We often pray the "Hail, Holy Queen" and we rarely ask
ourselves where the prayer began. In 1013 A.D., a baby boy,
hopelessly crippled, was welcomed by his parents and ten
brothers and sisters. He was baptized "Herman" and came to
be known as "Herman, the Cripple." His body was deformed,
but his intellect was extraordinarily brilliant. At an early age,
he became well-versed in many subjects, including several
languages as well as astronomy and music. He became a
Benedictine monk where his job was to teach. However, he had
to be carried into the classroom. He had a speech impediment
and found it hard to write. But, he was a born teacher. His
sharp mind easily solved student problems and he was loved by
all. Finally, after long years of service and suffering, he began
to suspect that death was near. With his deformed fingers, he
wrote the song that was in his heart, and set it to music. The
song, "Salve Regina" or "Hail, Holy Queen", has been sung by
the Church for a thousand years now. Herman died at age 41.
By todays standards, he would have had slim chance of even
being born! His deformity would have worked against him, but
also, his being the 11th child might have ended his fetal life
before his birth. How many people do you know who have
eleven children?
