the Academic Aspect. The mean value of boys sample (48.55) was higher
than that of girls sample (47.16). Hence it was found that the mental health
status of male students was significantly better than that of the female students
in the Academic Aspect.
The boys are generally dominant, independent competent and self
reliant. In contrast girls are generally sensitive, weak and dependent, and this
might have brought this difference in the mental health in the Academic
Aspect.
The calculated t values with respect to personal and social aspects
were less than the table values at 0.05 and 0.01 levels, which shows that there
is no significant difference between boys and girls sample in the personal and
social aspects of mental health.

The obtained 2 value is more than table value at 0.05 level, which
shows that there exists significant association between the Mental Health and
Academic Achievement of the Intermediate Students.
As the 2 value is significant we can assume that the Intermediate
Students who have very poor Mental Health might have had poor academic
achievement; who have poor Mental Health might have had average
performance; who have moderate Mental Health might have had above
average performance; who have good Mental Health might have had very
good or Ist class performance in the academics and who have very good
Mental Health might have had a performance with distinction. Hence it was
found that the Mental Health and Academic Achievement of the Intermediate
Students are dependent on each other.
The findings of this study can be supported by Wig, N.N and Nagpal,
R.N (1971) Prasanna K.C.B. (1984) Burwani G (1991) who also found that
there exists a significant correlation between Mental Health and Academic
Achievement.
However this finding is in opposition to the study of Sharma R.R.
(1979) who found lack of effect of Mental Health on the scholastic
achievement but influences certain measures of self concept.

As the obtained 2 value is more than table value at both 0.05 and
0.01 levels it is found that there exists a significant relationship between
Mental Health and Hardiness of the Intermediate students.
The Intermediate Students who are mentally healthy are with
emotional maturity, able to take their own decision, to plan ahead, to set
realistic goals, perceive themselves highly competent, committed to what they
do, able to control their lives, had good parental relationship, life satisfaction,
close friendships and social acceptance, which in turn might be making them
as hardy individuals.
As the 2 value is significant we can assume that the Intermediate
students who have very poor and poor mental health might have had low
hardiness levels; those who had moderate mental health might have had
moderate hardiness levels and who had good and very good mental health
might have had good hardiness. Hence it is found that mental health and
hardiness of the Intermediate students are dependent on each other.
