ANALYSIS OF DATA
4.0 Overview
Analysis of data is a process of inspecting, transferring data with the
goal of highlighting, useful information, suggesting conclusions and
supporting decision making. Hence, after collecting the research data, they
were processed, analyzed and studied by the investigator.

Analysis and

discussion were done objective-wise, specifying the hypothesis wherever

required. The present study is an attempt to know the mental health status of
the Intermediate students.
4.1 Objective 1
To find out the mental health status of II year Intermediate students
and classify them.

The mean value of the total sample 185.3 shows the mental health
status of the Intermediate students as moderate. As the 1/5th of the mean
value is 37.06 which is more than S.D. value 25.25 the sample is found

96

heterogeneous in the mental health status. Adolescence is a period during

which significant changes take place.

Adolescents persistently strive to

develop and acquire appropriate social roles, complex interpersonal skills, and
necessary acumen to solve problems more effectively and try to imbibe a
value system and finally try to attain a respectable place in the community
and society to which they belong. Certain developmental tasks and problems
are especially characteristic of adolescence.

In their struggle to face or

overcome the problems and in attaining the developmental tasks pertaining to

their age might have placed them in moderate status of mental health.
4.1.1 The key for classification of mental health scores is
developed in the following manner
Total number of items was 65 with a maximum weightage of 4 each.
The maximum possible score was 260. The minimum possible score was 65.
The range was 195. The scores were categorized into five classes following
the normal distribution. Hence 6 SD values were divided among the five
classes. Thus each category included 1.2 SD Values. The area between +1
to + 2 covered the score range 201 230, +2

to +3

covered the score

range 231 260 indicating good and very good categories. Thus the area
between -1 to -2 could cover 141 to 170 score range and between -2 to -3
could cover the score range falling below 140 indicating poor and very poor
categories of mental health respectively. Thus the categorization was done
and scores were distributed among the SD limits.

Classification of the sample among the five categories of mental health

brings out the following percentages of the scores. The highest percentage i.e.
38.60% of Intermediate students were found having moderate mental health
and the lowest percentage 2.16% of the students sample was found under the
extreme category i.e. very poor. While 29.98% of the students sample was
found of poor mental health; 25.49% of the students sample came under

98

good category and 3.77% of the sample was found having very good mental
health.
This classification revealed that 67.86% of the Intermediate students
were enjoying moderate to good mental health. Whereas 32.04% of the
Intermediate students were found with very poor to poor mental health which
indicated that they needed guidance and counseling to improve in the
academic, personal and social aspects of mental health.

Social Aspect

The Intermediate students were better in the social aspect of mental

health compared to the remaining two aspects.

The four dominant

characteristics observed by Holling Worth are

1. Need for freedom or independence
2. Need for attention and recognition
3. Need for association with opposite sex
4. Creation of an ideal society
At this stage adolescents may be laying a sound ground to be
connected and realistic in their social relations. Next rank as per the mean,
though not differing much from the social aspect was in the personal area of
Mental Health. This is the age of self consciousness, where they struggle to be
identified as independent personalities. Mental Health in the academic aspect
was comparatively lower than the other aspects in the Intermediate stage
which is a decisive course for their future career.

Hence they may be

100

experiencing academic pressure inspite of exercising all their capabilities to

achieve to the optimum possible extent.

Key for classification of scores of mental health status in

the Academic Aspect

Total number of items was 17 with a maximum weightage of 4 each.

The maximum possible score was 68. The minimum possible score was 17.
The range was 51. The scores were categorized into five classes following the
normal distribution. Hence the 6 SD values were divided among the five
classes which result in 1.2 SD value for each category.

Thus the

categorization was done and scores were distributed among the SD limits.

poor and very good. 23.88% and 22.80% of the Intermediate students were
found in poor and good categories respectively.

102

This classification revealed that nearly one-fourth of the Intermediate

students were not having sound mental health in the academic aspect.
Whereas one-fourth of the sample of Intermediate students were having better
mental health in the academic aspect.

Nearly half of the Intermediate

students were moderate in the academic aspect.

Key for interpretation of the Item means
The collected data were also discussed in each aspect against the
background of item means. The minimum possible score for each item was 1
and the maximum possible score for each item was 4. The range was 3. The
item means were categorized under 5 categories.

The items are arranged in descending order of mean values. It is note

worthy to find that the sample was found very good on taking learning
process as a challenge than fearing to face it (3.43).

The intermediate

students were found having good mental health status at trusting their
efficiency even if their faculty members abused them (3.08), in seeing the
positive side when their parents pestered them about their studies (3.06), in
taking decision about the course (2.95), by freely answering the questions
posed by their teachers (2.90), in enjoying what they were doing at the
moment (2.88), in having clear ideas about their short term goal sets (2.83),
in concentrating on their studies (2.80).

The sample of the Intermediate

students was found moderate in reading when they are physically as well as
mentally tired (2.78), in clarifying their doubts in lessons (2.67), in being
unhesitatingly expressing their views (2.63), in planning the way they should
read (2.63), in not being worried about their future (2.49), and in not being
too anxious about their marks and ranks (2.44).
Lack of sound mental health in the academic aspect may be because
academic achievement is considered a key criterion to judge ones total

105

potentialities and capabilities, therefore it is more pressing for students to have

high academic performance keen competition for entry into professional
courses. At this juncture the students life has the potential to add to high
pressures to perform.
Heavy academic demands and competitive environment are resulting
in examination anxiety for the Intermediate students.

Interpretation and Discussion

The obtained t value was 0.17 in the gender influence on the status of
mental health of the Intermediate students, therefore there is no significant
difference between male and female students in their mental health. This
finding is in collaboration with the earlier finding of Tejpreet Kang and Asha
Chawla (2009) who found, non significant difference in the Mental Health
status of rural adolescent boys and girls.
Where as this finding is opposing the study of Pathak R.P. and Rai V.K.
(1993) which revealed that female students were mentally healthier than the
male students when socio economic status was controlled.
As the obtained t value in finding the differences in the Academic
Aspect was more than the table value at 0.05 level, it was found that there is a
significant difference between boys and girls in their mental health status in

116

the Academic Aspect. The mean value of boys sample (48.55) was higher
than that of girls sample (47.16). Hence it was found that the mental health
status of male students was significantly better than that of the female students
in the Academic Aspect.
The boys are generally dominant, independent competent and self
reliant. In contrast girls are generally sensitive, weak and dependent, and this
might have brought this difference in the mental health in the Academic
Aspect.
The calculated t values with respect to personal and social aspects
were less than the table values at 0.05 and 0.01 levels, which shows that there
is no significant difference between boys and girls sample in the personal and
social aspects of mental health.
4.3.2 Hypothesis

The calculated t values with respect to the Mental Health of the
English and Telugu medium Intermediate students in all the aspects and in
specific academic, personal and social aspects are less than the table values
both at 0.05 and 0.01 levels.

It shows that there exists no significant

difference between English and Telugu medium Intermediate students in their

Interpretation and Discussion

The calculated t values

with respect to the Mental Health of the

Intermediate students in general and in specific aspects Academic, Personal,

and Social are less than the table values at 0.05 level and at 0.01 level. It
shows that there is no significant difference between the mental health of the
Intermediate students, hostelites and day scholars in the Academic, Personal,
and Social Aspects.
It is found that their status of stay i.e. whether day scholars or boarders,
does not have any significant influence on their mental health in general and
in specific aspects. The findings of this study can be supported, though not
directly by the study of Manika Mohan, Usha Kulshreshtha and Manisha
Tiwari (2006) which also found lack of influence of home, health and social
adjustment on the Mental Health.
4.3.4 Hypothesis
1. There would be no significant difference in Mental Health status between

Interpretation and Discussion

As the obtained t value of the total mental health aspect among Urban
and Rural Intermediate students is 0.72, it is found that there is no significant
difference between Urban and Rural Intermediate students in their mental
health. This study can be supported by the study of Pathak. R.P. and Rai,
V.K. in 1993 which revealed that urban and rural students did not differ
significantly in their Mental Health when socio economic status was
controlled.
As the obtained t value of the mental health in the Academic Aspect
among urban and rural intermediate students is 2.05 is more than table value
at 0.05 level. Hence, it is found that there is a significant difference between
the urban and rural intermediate students mental health in the Academic
Aspect. As the mean score of the urban students is higher than the rural
intermediate students it is found that the urban students have better mental
health in the academic aspect than the rural intermediate students.
As the obtained t value in Personal aspect is 0.40 which is less than
table values at 0.05 and 0.01 levels, it is found that there is no significant
difference in the mental health of the urban and rural intermediate students in
their personal aspect.
The obtained t value 2.07 which is more than the table value at 0.05
level it shows that there is a significant difference in the mental health of the
urban and rural intermediate students in the social aspect..

123

The mean value of mental health of urban students 58.76 is higher

than the mean value of rural students (57.13). This difference might be due
to their confidence acquired out of exposure to a variety of situations and the
necessity of dealing with those situations. The rural students are to care more
the public opinion, obey the elders and follow the customs which may disturb
the independent thinking and its consequent confidence in them. Hence the
urban students are found better in their mental health compared to the rural
students.
4.3.5 Hypothesis
1. There would be no significant difference between the first born and the

128

The obtained t value, 1.96 also shows significant difference at 0.05

level.
The mental health status of the Intermediate students with parents
having university education is found significantly better than that of others.
The mean value of the Mental Health status of the Intermediate
students having different backgrounds in terms of parental education are as
following.

The mean Mental Health score of Intermediate students with

parents having university education is 195.8, college education is 188.33,

secondary education is 182.79, and with primary education is 182.16.
The helplessness of the growing child during a long period of nurture
and protection demands the natural duty of the parents to transmit their
experience, knowledge and understanding to their children. Thus the family
is destined, by its very nature, to be the primary educational agency in the life
of the child. The educated parents may, perform these duties in a better
manner than the less educated. The adolescents who are reared right from
their birth in a family with good educational background may value life in a
different and may be in a better way, which may pave a way for sound
mental health. Hence, may be the better Mental Health status of Intermediate
students with better parental education than that of the students with poor
parental education.

137

The obtained 2 value is more than table value at 0.05 level, which
shows that there exists significant association between the Mental Health and
Academic Achievement of the Intermediate Students.
As the 2 value is significant we can assume that the Intermediate
Students who have very poor Mental Health might have had poor academic
achievement; who have poor Mental Health might have had average
performance; who have moderate Mental Health might have had above
average performance; who have good Mental Health might have had very
good or Ist class performance in the academics and who have very good
Mental Health might have had a performance with distinction. Hence it was
found that the Mental Health and Academic Achievement of the Intermediate
Students are dependent on each other.
The findings of this study can be supported by Wig, N.N and Nagpal,
R.N (1971) Prasanna K.C.B. (1984) Burwani G (1991) who also found that
there exists a significant correlation between Mental Health and Academic
Achievement.
However this finding is in opposition to the study of Sharma R.R.
(1979) who found lack of effect of Mental Health on the scholastic
achievement but influences certain measures of self concept.

As the obtained value 37.87 is more than the table values at 0.05
and 0.01 level it is found that there exists a significant association between the
Academic Aspect of Mental Health and Academic Achievement of the
Intermediate students. This might be because mentally healthy Intermediate
students might be able to make their own decisions, emotionally competent,
and confident, might be able to plan ahead and set realistic goals which in
turn might have helped them in good Academic performance.
As the 2 value is significant we can assume that the Intermediate
students who have very poor mental health in the Academic Aspect might

139

have had Poor Academic Achievement, who have poor mental health in the
Academic Aspect might have had Average performance, who have moderate
mental health in the Academic Aspect have had above Average performance,
those who had good mental health in the Academic Aspect might have had
very good or I class performance in academics and those who have had a
very good mental health in the Academic Aspect might have had performance
with distinction. Hence it is found that the Academic Aspect of Mental Health
and Academic Achievement of the Intermediate Students are dependent on
each other.

142

As the obtained 2 value is more than table value at both 0.05 and
0.01 levels it is found that there exists a significant relationship between
Mental Health and Hardiness of the Intermediate students.
The Intermediate Students who are mentally healthy are with
emotional maturity, able to take their own decision, to plan ahead, to set
realistic goals, perceive themselves highly competent, committed to what they
do, able to control their lives, had good parental relationship, life satisfaction,
close friendships and social acceptance, which in turn might be making them
as hardy individuals.
As the 2 value is significant we can assume that the Intermediate
students who have very poor and poor mental health might have had low
hardiness levels; those who had moderate mental health might have had
moderate hardiness levels and who had good and very good mental health
might have had good hardiness. Hence it is found that mental health and
hardiness of the Intermediate students are dependent on each other.
