Some people believe that scientific discoveries have given us a much better

understanding of the world around us. Others believe that science has
revealed to us that the world is infinitely more complex than we ever realized.
Write a response in which you discuss which view more closely aligns with
your own position and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In
developing and supporting your position, you should address both of the
views presented.
"Why", is the question people end up asking from one another and over the
years, science has given us the answers to many of the questions relating to
the world around us. From the phenomenon of day and night, how plants
grow, every phenomenon has a reason behind it. I agree that scientific
discoveries has given us a much better understanding of the world around us,
others might think differently too, given each discovery leads to many other
discoveries and one might get stuck in answering the "why's" rather than
using what one has discovered.
First of all, scientific discoveries have revealed that no naturally occurring
phenomenon occurs without a reason and has answered many questions. For
instance, the occurrence of day and night everyday and the change of
seasons throughout the year are explained by the rotation and revolution of
the earth. In fact the time taken for these respective changes to occur is also
determined by science. These discoveries play a significant role in our daily
lives: it helps us keep track of our time, age and what not.
In addition, these discoveries have further led to inventions that have made
our daily lives much more convenient. For example, the natural disasters that
significantly shaped the world, covered huge areas of forest under the layers
of soil, which on years and years of decay gave us coal and petroleum. On
study, it was discovered that these are sources of energy, which lead to
inventions of machines like cars, generators, trains making our daily lives
simpler.
On the other hand, scientists might get too engrossed in finding the answers
of all the phenomenon's, as initial discoveries reveal that the world is a much
more complex place than we ever thought. As there is a probability that one
might not find the answer they are looking for leading to proposal of false
hypothesis, confusing the scientists and the public further. Such false
hypothesis may lead people doubting already proved theories and lead to
further doubt, but it is said that sometimes new discoveries are made by
carefully examining the shortcomings of a previous theory. So this confusion
might lead us to the answer of further unanswered questions, hence given us
a better understanding of the world.
To conclude, the above reasons and examples substantiate my view that

scientific discoveries have helped us gain a better understanding of the world

around us.
