Welcome to Art Class!

THIS HAS IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTS PLEASE SAVE!
I am Mrs. Conrad and I am the new art teacher at the school. In this class, we will focus on hands-on work, art history, and
overall appreciation for the arts. This introduction will open the world of drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and so
much more!

Why take Art?

Art is a great way to release your creative side and to use your imagination. Studies show that students taking related arts
classes do better in school. Throughout this class you will learn about many different cultures (Native American, Colonial, etc.)
and develop a new range of vocabulary. Also, we will study the purpose of visual art. This will help us learn what makes art so
great!

Rules:
In our class, we follow the classroom and school rules. This means:
Classroom:
1. Always be respectful of yourself, others, materials, classroom, and the teacher.
2. Always come to class prepared and ready to work.
3. Always clean up your space. No messes should be left behind.
4. Always be on task. No distractions.
5. Always ask questions if you do not understand something. Thats why Im here.
6. Always have fun and learn about art.
School:
1. No students are permitted to have bags of any type. (Gym bags are the only exception. They are permitted on Monday
and must be kept in your locker until gym class and then taken directly to gym.)
2. Electronic devices are only allowed during E-time and lunch time in the gym. If you are caught with your phone
outside of those times, it will be taken and your parent will have to come get it.
3. Students need to walk on the right side of the hallway when transitioning to any location.
Respect Yourself! Respect Your Classmates! Respect Your Teacher! Respect Your School!
Please respect your classmates space. Do not touch anyones artwork unless asked. The same goes for your personal work!
In the art room, please do not touch or play with objects/materials that do not pertain to the class project. Only use the supplies
offered for the specific lesson or supplies I permit you to use.

Collaborative Art Room:

In our class, we sit at tables together. Collaborative means that we work together and aim for success. This means the students
need to work together to make sure that all materials are picked up and placed back where they belong. It also means that they
need to clean up any messes that are left behind as well.

Artwork:
As we begin working on projects, students will accomplish some amazing art pieces. The students will be given their work
directly after it is completed and graded. If any students work exceeds the assessment or expectations, I will ask to keep it for
school displays and a possible art show.

Artsonia:
This will take me some time to set up. When it is completed there will be a parental consent form sent home. After the slips are
received back, all artwork will be published online through Artsonia.com. Artsonia is a wonderful opportunity to keep all
artwork safe online and share with families/communities. Parents are able to control many aspects of their childs portfolio. You
are able to buy products online with student artwork on it.

Absent Work:

If a student is absent, they will need to do the work that is completed when they return. I will have a folder for missed work or
assignments. It is the students responsibility to get their work. I cannot remind every child that I have to get their work made
up when they are absent. Students must be responsible and accountable for their work and grade when class time is missed.

Consequences:
Personal consequences are as followed:
1st Offense A Verbal Warning.
2nd Offense Personal Talk and Call Home.
3rd Offense Lunch Detention.
4th Offense Office/Principal Referral/ISS.

Class procedures:
1. You must wait to be let in to my classroom. You do not just walk in. I will be at the door and allow you to come in.
2. You need to go to your seat.
3. You need to make sure that all of your books and personal items are in the floor under your chair. They may not be
kept on the table.
4. Make sure you have read the board for instructions and assignment.
5. Get your materials.
6. Listen to directions.
7. Be prepared to work.
8. Ask questions if you do not understand anything listed on the board or being said.
9. Begin working
10. Toward the end of class, I will signal when all work needs to go back into the specified location after you have labeled
the back of your paper.
11. All tables must be cleaned back up.
12. All chairs must be pushed in.
13. Students then will be permitted to leave.
Any changes to procedures will be posted daily on the board including learning target(s), schedules, and any other further
information.

Hall passes, Leaving the Classroom, and Tardies:

As our administration has requested we have hall passes for the various places students need to go. If they are caught without a
hall pass of any type, then they will be given detention. I have made four passes for the various places students may need to go.
However, there is a new rule being instituted that students are not allowed out of the classroom during the first 15 minutes of
class or the last 15 minutes of class. Classes are now 45 minutes long. This leaves 15 minutes for students to do anything they
need to do. Students need to be mindful of this new rule.
Tardies are when you are late to a class. In my class, if you get three tardies you will be issued ISS.

Mystery Artist of the Month:

This is a new concept that I have brought to the school. The Mystery Artist of the Month is a fun game for the students. They
must write down the hints or clues that I have given them on the bulletin board outside of my room. Then they must research
them using a search engine on the internet. This will enable them to discover who the artist is and possibly discover the name
of the artwork. It allows them to learn about art outside of the classroom. It also gives them critical researching skills that are
necessary in the 21st learning world we live in.

Music:
I do play music in my class. Sometimes I will even allow a request for certain songs from the radio or online streaming radio.
This is a reward/privilege. If students begin breaking rules, etc. this can be taken away. It can get boring just listening to each
other work on your various assignments. Please do not make me be a bad guy and turn the tunes off. Follow the rules and
show respect!

Labeling Artwork:
Labeling artwork is very important. On the back of each artwork, students need to place their full name, grade level, period
number, assignment name, and date. This will help make the class run smoothly with passing out work.

What about materials?

I will supply the majority of the materials in class. If something special is required, I will notify parents and students in class,
website, or in the newsletter that will be posted weekly.
Students are never to open any cabinet or drawer without permission from me.
If students have to take their artwork home, they are responsible for their own materials. Plenty of time will be given in-class to
complete assignments, unless it is specified as homework. That will generally be written work or something that just requires
crayons or colored pencils.
Any donations of supplies are wonderful. An art class can go through materials like crazy. Anything is welcome especially
number #2 pencils, disinfecting wipes (lysol wipes/clorox wipes) , printer paper, yarn, tissue paper, construction paper, etc.

What if I lose my work?

All work will be placed in their grades shelf. The students are responsible for keeping track of their assignments. If a student
loses his or her work, they must make up their assignments on their own time or the student can choose to take a zero on the
assignment.

Website and Twitter:

I have a website where you may also access information and see interesting things going on within our classroom. Please use
the url: http://artwithconrad.weebly.com . There will be information available there on occasion. I also post our wonderful art
on twitter. The username for that is: @bconradart.

What about Grades?

Grades will be posted on Engrade. Also, students will receive rubrics, grade checklist, etc. with their artwork with the grade.
Comments will be placed along with grades. The process of how the work was created and quality will be factored into the
grades. Report cards go out every 9 weeks. If you have a question or concern, please ask me at any time. I will be glad to
explain any grade given in my classroom. I am here to help you succeed and want you to have the best art experience possible.
Listed below is the grading scale that will be used in my classroom.
The grade scale is:
A (93-100)
B (85-92)
C (75-84)
D (65-74)
F (0-64)
If you have any questions about this scale, please ask and I will do my best to answer any question.

Please Cut on the Dotted Line Below and Return.
