Canceling an Appointment
To cancel or reschedule an appointment, please call the physicians
office, department, or unit that you are scheduled to visit.
Call the main number at 617-667-7000 for the telephone number
of a specific area of the medical center.
E
Emergency Services
You will be seen by the triage nurse (one of the registered nurses) who will
evaluate the urgency and nature of your illness or injury. If you have a primary
care physician, be sure to inform the nurse of your doctor’s name to ensure
continuity of care. Whenever possible, you should notify your primary care
physician before coming to the Emergency Department. After you are seen
by the triage nurse, a member of the registration staff will ask you or someone
who is with you for registration information. You will then be seen by a
team of healthcare professionals who will assess your condition, order any
necessary diagnostic tests, and provide the necessary treatment during your
stay. Test results will be discussed with you, and you will be given instructions
I
about follow-up care. When appropriate, your primary care physician will be
contacted.
You will be assigned a bed as quickly as possible on the appropriate unit and
campus. Please inform the Emergency Department if you were previously
treated at the former Beth Israel Hospital (East Campus) or the former
Deaconess Hospital (West Campus). This information will allow your care
team to access the most current information regarding your condition, and
if possible, may enable staff to treat you at the location with which you are
familiar. Remember, however, that we are now one combined medical center
at both campuses. Once you are transferred to a unit and bed, a new team of
providers will continue your day-to-day medical care and decide when you are
able to return home. Before you are discharged, you will receive instructions
about follow-up care.

Walk-In Visits and Travel Clinic
I f you feel ill but do not need emergency care, please call your primary care
provider. If he or she is not available, you can see a care provider at the Brown
Medical Walk-In Unit. The Walk-In Unit allows “walk-in” patients with non-
urgent illnesses or injuries, such as a sore throat, upper respiratory infection,
ear ache, or sprained ankle, to receive care rapidly and efficiently. If you are a
member of a managed care plan, check your plan’s policy regarding approval for
T
a visit and co-payments.

Information and Services for Patients and Visitors
Whenever possible, to ensure continuity of care, call your primary care provider
before you come to the medical center. Many insurance companies and managed
care plans require you make a co-payment when you visit the Walk-In Unit or
Emergency Department. They also may require prior approval by the company
or by your primary care provider.
If you are uninsured or have limited income, you may qualify for public
assistance or free care. Depending on your income level, all or part of your
medical costs may be covered by the medical center under the free care provision
of State Medicaid Law. Non-private-practice physicians who are based at Beth
Israel Deaconess use the same guidelines outlined in the free care provision to
determine the free care eligibility of their patients.
Interpreter Services
For urgent health problems that occur during evenings and on weekends, please
go to the Berenson Emergency Unit, located at 330 Brookline Avenue on the
East Campus. The staff will be able to contact interpreters when needed.

The Beth Israel Deaconess Learning Center, part of the Beth Israel Deaconess
division of nursing, is an innovative resource designed to give patients, visitors,
and members of the community an opportunity to become better educated
about and take a more active role in their own healthcare. The Learning Center’s
Health Information Library, open to the public, has an extensive collection
of books, periodicals, videos, and computer software on a wide variety of
healthcare topics. Internet access is also available. The Center’s nurses offer
one-on-one instruction in self-care before or after a diagnosis, procedure, or
surgery, when referred by a Beth Israel Deaconess Provider. The Center also
offers programs and services targeted toward identified health education needs
in specific populations. Information can also be sent to patients who are unable
to visit the library.
