Smoking is unattractive
Cigarette advertisements show beautiful people doing fun
things while they smoke. However, in reality smoking doesn't
make people look good, it's just the opposite.
Smoking stains and yellows your teeth. Smoking can cause
tooth loss. Smokers are up to six times more likely than
non-smokers to develop gum disease, which can lead to
tooth loss.
Smoking can thin your hair and make men go bald. Experts
think the toxic chemicals in smoke can damage the DNA in
hair follicles causing thin hair that tends to go grey sooner
than non-smokers. Men who smoke are about twice as likely
to lose their hair as non-smokers.
Smoking can make your skin look greyish. A 1985 study
came up with the term Smokers Face to describe certain
facial characteristics, such as wrinkles, gauntness, and a
grey appearance of the skin, caused by smoking. Cigarette
smoke contains carbon monoxide, which displaces the
oxygen in your skin, and nicotine, which reduces blood flow,
leaving skin dry and discoloured.
Smoking may even cause belly fat. A 2009 study in the
Netherlands found that smokers had more visceral fat than
non-smokers. This deep fat pads internal organs and can
accumulate in your midsection.

Preserve Our Future

We all serve our purpose on this planet; we are what make
it maintain order. However, recent studies show us that
global warming is happening all around us. We are not
doing our part to stop this from escalating even further. I
feel if everyone can change their habits and focus on what
is best for our environment we can ultimately change our
future.
The burning of fossil fuels is one of the main contributors
to global warming. When fossil fuels are burned they emit
carbon dioxide which gets trapped by our atmosphere
causing the air to become heated, known as the
Greenhouse Effect. It will take an 80% reduction in Carbon
emissions by 2050 to avert the most dangerous,
irreversible and costly effects of climate change. We are
already experiencing higher and lower temperatures, major
storms, out of control fires, and Artic melting.
There are many ways we can prevent global warming, that
not only are good for our environment but help save money.
We could recycle, preserve energy and water, use the
backside of paper, use a cloth bag while shopping, dont
buy cars that use a lot of gas, or even get a hybrid car.
If everyone would just open their eyes to the dangerous
truth then we can take our first step to put an end to this.
If we all work together, I know we can change our fate
before it is too late.

The Teenage Dilemma

Adolescence is a period whereby teenagers try to seek

independence through experimentation. It is important to
understand that some of the youths behaviours that seem
bizarre are a normal part of a teens life.

As they grow older, teenagers will be more selfconscious. Therefore, one of the normal teenage
behaviours is the desire to change ones appearance.
However, make sure that your changes are not terribly
radical and that it is not accompanied by disturbances of
regular activities, especially your studies.

Some teenage girls want to be stylish, attractive and

trendy. However, look out for obsessions with weight and
changes in eating habits, as that may result in dramatic
weight loss as well as endangering your health.

Another typical behaviour among teenagers is focusing

on ones friends and a desire to be independent from the
family. They may stop talking to their parents and they may
withdraw, or not want to be seen in public with their family.
This is especially so with the boys. However, these
teenagers must understand that they are required at
certain family functions.

Finally, teenagers may display intervals of moodiness

and instances of emotional ups and downs. Do not panic
over this period of uncertainty as it may drag you down into
long periods of anxiety, sadness and seclusion. So, in order
to lead a happier, healthier life, you have to learn to cope

The Benefits of Travelling

One of my dreams has always been to travel the world. I
cant wait for the day that Im able to take a plane to go
anywhere my heart desires. Something about travelling has
always intrigued me and I hope Im able to fulfil this
dream soon.
Learning new cultures and meeting new people is a
great aspect of travelling. You get a chance to experience
different ways of living and view new habits. The locals are
usually very friendly and willing to show you around, so you
will get an inside scoop of the place youre visiting. Dont
be afraid to go exploring by yourself though, as you might
find a hidden lake or a deserted beach with a gorgeous
sunset!
Since were always busy trying to make the most of
our time, its nice to escape from your normal life. The
best way to do so is by buying a plane ticket and leaving
your home. Travelling gets your mind off of things and helps
you to see things in a different light. You will get
disconnected from your mundane daily routine and find
inner peace.
When travelling, you will create memories that will last a
lifetime! You will see so many new things and experience so
much, those memories will always have a special place in
your heart. Especially, when you take lots of pictures and
create photo albums afterward. Whenever you look at the
pictures you will instantly feel happy! These, in my humble
opinion, are some of the benefits of travelling.

Is Tuition Necessary?
Tuition is the act of teaching, especially to people in smaller
groups or individuals. It is extremely common among Malaysians,
especially primary and secondary students. When asked if tuition
is really necessary, different people have different opinions. From
my point of view, tuition is necessary and I provide my reasons
below.
In this competitive world, students undoubtedly need some extra
assistance to help them perform better academically. Tuition is
necessary to complement their school work, especially when it
comes to the more difficult topics and challenging areas.
Additional practice is required to help improve the students'
understanding. Through having private tuition, students are able
to obtain extra helpful tips from their teachers and thus they are
more likely to excel in their studies.
When having tuition, students get to learn in smaller groups or
on a one-to-one basis. This is certainly advantageous to timid
students as they get the opportunities to speak up and ask
questions. In a typical Malaysian public school, a class usually
comprises about 45 students. Among so many classmates, the
shy and introverted ones normally find it difficult to ask any
questions they have while attending classes. Such problem can
be solved through having tuition.
Furthermore, students are able to get personal attention and
develop good study skills with their teachers' help. Since the
group is small, it would be easier for teachers to spot students'
weaknesses and help strengthen them. In other words, through
close collaboration with their tuition teachers, students are able
to learn and improve more effectively.
Through receiving tuition, students get to occupy their time
wisely. This is especially true for latchkey kids. Undeniably, it is
better for students to spend their time studying and revising for
examinations rather than wasting time socialising with the wrong
crowd. Things can go really wrong when students get into wrong
company.
Even though tuition fees can be expensive and tuition may take
up too much of students' time, the benefit far outweighs the
negatives. Through having tuition, students are able to acquire
unrivalled mastery of a particular subject. Therefore I firmly
believe that tuition is absolutely a necessary tool for students to
strengthen their weaker subjects and boost their self-confidence
and morale

Should school children have long holidays?

When asked if school children should have long holidays, the answers of
different individuals will certainly differ. Some people have the opinion
that school children should be entitled to long holidays while the others
disagree. From my point of view, school children should be given long
holidays. I have my own reasons for thinking so.
The freedom of school children is normally restricted by their parents
during the school days as they want their children to focus on their studies
in order to pass their examinations with flying colours. Apart from
schooling, they have to spend a lot of time doing their homework and
attending tuition classes as well. As a result, they hardly have any time left
for leisure pursuits. During school holidays, more freedom is usually given
and children are able to spend their time on activities that they are fond of.
For example, if children have green fingers, they can spend more time on
gardening. They can also spend more time on their favourite sports in order
to keep fit both physically and mentally.
The arrival of long school holidays is also a good time for children to
strengthen their family ties, since families need to spend time together in
order to bond. Examples of activities that assist to develop close family ties
are having a picnic at the seaside and playing sports and games. When
children involve in family activities such as cleaning the house and
preparing a meal, they learn about the spirit of cooperation and burdensharing, thus promoting strong family ties. Besides, they learn to be more
independent and responsible when they do household chores such as
washing the clothes and dishes, sweeping the floor, laying the table before
a meal, making their own beds, and so forth.
Another reason why long holidays are necessary is that children need to
meet other relatives and to socialise with friends in the community so as to
improve their interpersonal skills, since 'no man is an island'. This can be
extremely beneficial to them and helps them be better equipped especially
when they grow up and starts working in the society.
It is true that many parents face problems during long school holidays as
their children waste their time by spending it on undesirable activities such
as playing too much computer games and getting into bad company.
However, I believe that such problems can be solved through proper
planning, guidance and time management.
Though there are disadvantages for school children to have long school
holidays, the benefits far outweigh the disadvantages. As the saying goes,
'all work and no play make Jack a dull boy'. Therefore, I disagree that
school children should not have long holidays.

How to keep oneself healthy

There is a saying, 'health is better than wealth'. The saying is
extremely true - a man may be immensely rich, but without
health, he can hardly enjoy his wealth. Since health is so
important, how does one keep oneself healthy?
One of the most effective ways to keep fit is through exercising.
Doing exercise helps to reduce the risk of contracting heart
diseases and getting stroke. Other than that, it also helps to
decrease the risk of developing diabetes, high blood pressure
and colon cancer. People who exercise regularly are able to
maintain healthy bones, muscles and joints. Therefore, it is
advisable to do exercise such as walking, jogging, swimming,
cycling, doing push-ups, skipping, and playing sports three to
four times a week for about half an hour per session to maintain
good health.
Having a balanced diet is another key factor in ensuring a
healthy life. It is important to eat food that is rich in nutrients.
Fresh fruits and vegetables are rich sources of vitamins and
minerals that are essential in order to keep fit. For strong bones
and teeth, drink more yogurt and milk and eat more cheese.
Other food that contributes to a balanced diet includes fish,
poultry, eggs, beef, beans, nuts and tofu. It is advisable to avoid
food that contains too much sugar as it causes bad health. The
same goes for junk food and also food made from refined flour as
a lot of nutrients are destroyed during the refining process.
It is wise to avoid smoking and drinking alcohol, since they
damage our lungs and livers respectively, besides bringing forth
other harmful effects to our bodies. Taking drugs can be a serious
problem as it usually causes addictions, diseases and cancers. In
serious cases, it may even cause deaths. Thus, it is advisable to
stay away from drugs.
Having sufficient sleep is also a vital factor. Every day, school
children, teenagers and adults should get 10 to 11 hours, 8 to 9
hours and 7 to 9 hours of sleep respectively. The insufficiency of
sleep can lead to serious heart problems, high blood pressure,
stroke, diabetes and obesity. To improve the quality of our sleep,
it is important to sleep in complete darkness, since artificial light
interferes with the production of hormones or chemicals that tells
our body to rest. If we are unable to eliminate the light in our
room, then wear an eye mask.
About 70 percent of our body is made of water. Since our body is
constantly using it up, we need to drink about 8 glasses of water
daily to replenish it. Water is needed to flush toxins out of our
vital organs, carry nutrients to our cells and provide a moist
environment for our ear, nose and throat tissues. It also cools our
body through the process of perspiration. When sweat
evaporates from our skin, it takes heat with it and lowers our

body temperature.
In conclusion, it is extremely vital for us to do everything in
moderation. As long as one cultivates good habits and leads a

Where do our phones come from?

By Devin Reese
If you feel anxious when you don't have your phone nearby, you
are not alone. About 6 billion mobile phones are in circulation on
Earth. We depend on them for a huge range of services. We text
friends, share selfies, order food, get news and watch movies.

Our mobile phones not only help us manage our daily lives,
but also connect us to people around the world. Mobile
phones do it in ways, and at speeds that did not use to be
possible. Cultural anthropologists are studying where come
from.
The global network of supply chains for mobile phones rests
on the backs of miners. Many live in Bolivia, Democratic
Republic of Congo and South Africa. The miners are key, as
well as factory workers in China and Brazil. The products
are sealed and concealed under the sleek glass and metal
cases designed in places such as Europe, South Korea and
the United States.
When you dispose of mobile phones, you throw away costly
minerals. They include rare earths, tantalum and gold.
Some anthropologists are analyzing how, why and when
mobile phones are repaired rather than tossed out. The
Smithsonian's Joshua A. Bell envisions a future when we
would open up and repair our own phones.

Male cat takes role of mom
By Mark Thiessen | Associated Press
Six abandoned kittens named after the kids in "The Brady Bunch"
TV series are getting a nurturing boost. It has come from an
unlikely source, a male cat with a slight neurological disorder.
The 3-week-old kittens are named Jan, Marcia, Cindy, Greg, Peter
and Bobby. They have been adopted by Henry. He is an 8-monthold male cat in the southeast Alaska community of Ketchikan.
"We have Henry playing Alice. It was the perfect match," said
Heather Muench, comparing the cat's role to that of the lovable
live-in housekeeper on the old TV series.
Muench is a volunteer with the Ketchikan Humane Society. She is
caring for the kittens at home after someone put them into a
cardboard box and left them on a road on Prince of Wales Island.
Children walking home from school heard the kittens crying. A
humane society volunteer living on the island had the kittens
flown to Ketchikan.
Muench is providing round-the-clock care, both at her home and
at her day job. It is at the Island-to-Island Veterinary Clinic in
Ketchikan.
At home, she's getting lots of help from Henry. He is a male cat.
She and her husband adopted him from the all-volunteer
Ketchikan Humane Society. Henry's disorder affects his
coordination. It causes him to walk unevenly and prevents him
from jumping.
What he lacks in motor skills is more than compensated by his
demeanor.
"He is very, very sweet and gentle. And he has taken a shine to
these kittens," Muench said.
Henry spends hours licking the kittens clean. He has become
very attached.
Muench takes the kittens to work with her to continue their care
during the work day. Taking them away raised Henry's angst.
