Message from Chairman

Dear Members,
Greetings. Wish you all a Happy New year, though belated. The new committee of office
bearers has taken over and we expect to continue the work left unfinished by the earlier
team forward and also take up new initiatives.
One of the initiatives we propose is senior member elevation and fellowship nomination. I
request all eligible members to refer our recent mail and also to go through the IEEE web
site and proceed with the nomination. We will be only happy to assist you in this regard.
The eligibility criteria for application to IEEE senior membership and its benefits are briefly covered in this issue.
This current issue of MAS LINK covers a range of events including conferences, technical talks, lectures,
workshops and seminars organized by various student branches and society chapters and affinity groups covering
many value added topics. Details of the IEEE Madras Section Annual Meet 2015 held on 31st Jan 2016 in Anna
University, which was attended by about 120 members, IEEE Madras Section committees and Execom for the year
2016 are covered.
While appreciating the efforts of Dr. Nirmal, one our members, in successfully completing the 2015 VOLT -Volunteer Leadership Training Program, I look forward to your active response and participation in the forthcoming
events including the 7th International Conference on Transforming Healthcare with Information Technology in Oct
2016, AIYEHUM 2016, a project-contest aimed in encouraging young engineers to solve real-world challenges
applying science and technology, one day Mini POCO event on organizing conferences, effective contribution in
journals and innovative practices.
To increase the activity at student branches and to increase the membership, detailed information is provided along
with the benefits to student branches from the Section. Moreover, I am confident that the compiled under the column
Information Resources by H. R. Mohan will be useful to our members.
In order to encourage active participation of Indian students in international programs and competitions, National
Institute of Ocean Technology (an autonomous research center under Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of
India) in Chennai conducts competition for designing Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (SAV) and open-house
annually enabling students to interact with scientists so as to understand various strategic technologies which are
being developed in India for harnessing deep sea mineral and hydrocarbon resources, ocean energy, fresh water,
ocean observation systems and marine biotechnologies. I recommend students to constantly look out and take
advantage of such niche opportunities provided by other research centers in the defense, space, marine, energy
sectors, etc.
Finally, I would appreciate regular feedback and valuable comments on the various initiatives, activities,
information sharing, events and programs.
Till next time,
Yours voluntarily
M. A. Atmanand

Message from the Chief Editor

H.R. Mohan
hrmohan.ieee@gmail.com

IEEE MAS LINK is happy to present the 1st issue for the year 2016. In this issue, reports on
activities and events held at various Student Branches namely Jansons Institute of
Technology, Coimbatore; Rajalakshmi Engineering College, Chennai; National
Engineering College, Kovilpatti; Knowledge Institute of Technology, Salem; Sona College
of Technology, Salem; K. S. Rangasamy College of Technology, Tiruchengode; K. S.
Rangasamy College of Technology, Tiruchengode -- EMBS SB Chapter have been
published along with a list of events organised by Society Chapters such as CS, ITS, IAS
and Affinity Group WIE.
The Section held its Annual Meeting for the year 2015 on 31 st Jan 2016. A detailed report on the annual meeting
along with select photos has been published in this issue.
This issue has a number of important announcements which include: 70th Anniversary Student Challenge; Richard
E. Merwin Student Scholarship; How to Become an IEEE Senior Member; Guidelines for submitting reports and
articles to get published in the IEEE MAS LINK newsletter; 2016 R10 IEEE Mini POCO at Chennai ; All IEEE
Young Engineers Humanitarian Challenge (AIYEHUM) 2016; 7th International Conference on Transforming
Healthcare with IT; Join IEEE Computer Society; Benefits to Student Branches from the Sections; Technical
Meetings; Conferences; Student Congress; Graphic Design Workshop; and Student Branch Status
While many of the announcements relate to the benefits to the members at large, the last one on Student Branch
(SB) Status is quite disturbing. The Madras Section had the distinction of having the largest number of SBs across
the globe. Unfortunately, over the years, a significant number of SBs have become non-active and many of them
have single digit membership, far below the minimum no. required to be a recognized SB. It is given to understand
from R10 MGA that these SBs will be terminated. It will be a sad thing to happen to an institution and indirectly to
the Section. Hence, we urge the SB counselors and professional members in these institution come forward to take
steps in making the SB active by enrolling additional members in time. Every year, from 1 st March, half yearly
membership rate is applicable to first time members. They will enjoy the membership benefits for EIGHT months
by paying the dues for SIX months. Additionally, Computer Society offers a package deal by which a student who
pays a nominal additional amount (USD 4 around Rs. 275) gets the membership in Computer Society with full
access to the IEEE CS Digital Library which normally costs over USD 100 for professional members. We hope,
with all your support, the Madras Section will retain its credentials of a Section with largest no. of SBs.
Other items published in this issue include: Information Recourses, a compilation of useful information available on
the Web and the details of Execom members and various committees at the Section.
MAS LINK congratulates Dr. D. Nirmal for successfully completing the 2015 VOLT -- Volunteer Leadership
Training Program and SIGHT ADSGAF for offering green vehicles to fisherwomen.
On behalf of the newsletter team consisting of Mr. Prashant Nair, Editor, Dr. M.A. Atmanand, Dr. N.R. Alamelu
Mr. P.A. Manoharan, Mr. M. Arun, and Mr. A. Ashok Vardhan, we promise a regular monthly newsletter with
quality reading materials and timely announcements. As the newsletter aims to provide a platform to all our
members to share their experiences through articles, research findings and so on, we seek contributions from one
and all for a feature rich newsletter. While contributing to the newsletter pl. adhere to the guidelines for publishing
available at http://goo.gl/5MuY0c This will greatly help the editorial team and save time in the compilation of
material for a quality newsletter.
While the eVersion of the newsletter will be published every month, a condensed print edition will be brought out
once a quarter to start with and the periodicity will be enhanced over a period.
We are sure that you will enjoy reading the Feb 2016 issue of IEEE MAS LINK. Please provide your valuable
feedback for improvement. Send your feedback by email to ieeeemaslink@gmail.com with a copy to the chief
editor at hrmohan.ieee@gmail.com

Activity of SIGHT ADSGAF of Madras Section gets reported in Time of India

Fisherwomen get green vehicles to take the day's catch to the market
Kanyakumari: In coastal districts, women folk in the fishing community often face the hurdle of transporting fish.
While the men go out into sea for fishing, it is the women who sell the catch in the market, taking it from fish
landing centres on the coast to inland. Most of the time, transporting fish in buses and trains is objected to by fellow
passengers due to the smell. So the women resort to three wheelers - auto rickshaws - to transport the fish and they
are always at the mercy of auto rickshaw drivers who fleece them since fish is perishable item has to be taken to the
market without delay to fetch good prices.
To address this issue, the Association of Deep Sea Going Artisanal Fishermen (ADSGAF), with the support of IEEE
- Sight (Institute of Electric and Electronic Engineering - Special Interest Group on Humanitarian Technology) has
come out with a solar powered three-wheeler in coastal Kanyakumari. Students from Annai Velankanni College of
Engineering in Pottalkulam, Kanyakumari district, were roped in to develop a suitable model. The solar-powered
three wheeler is on a trial run between the coastal villages of Neerodi and Marthandanthurai, and Arockiapuram and
Nagercoil town for the last three months. Vincent Jain of ADSGAF said the project was named solar-powered self
transportation for women fish vendors. In the past, the association successfully fitted solar panels in deep sea fishing
boats to save on fuel as well as to provide back-up to boat engines in case of emergencies arising in mid-sea.
Similarly, a solar-powered refrigerated truck was also launched to transport fish in Colachel.
Generally, fish vending women have to wait a long time at the sea shore to get a suitable vehicle to transport fish to
various markets. After a day-long toil in the scorching sun to sell fish, returning home is another ordeal for them.
"The objective is to provide them a suitable vehicle that is also eco-friendly. The project is in trial for the last three
months in the coastal stretches of the district. After some trouble, our women are doing well with this vehicle," he

World Development Report 2016: Digital
Dividends: Digital technologies have spread rapidly
in much of the world. Digital dividendsthat is, the
broader development benefits from using these
technologieshave lagged behind. In many
instances, digital technologies have boosted growth,
expanded opportunities, and improved service
delivery. Yet their aggregate impact has fallen short
and is unevenly distributed. For digital technologies
to benefit everyone everywhere requires closing the
remaining digital divide, especially in internet access.
But greater digital adoption will not be enough. To
get the most out of the digital revolution, countries
also need to work on the analog complementsby
strengthening regulations that ensure competition
among businesses, by adapting workers skills to the
demands of the new economy, and by ensuring that
institutions are accountable. For the 359 pages report

Is Software Licensing at a Breaking Point?:

Software licensing has become a giant thorn in the
side of IT departments. Today's licensing
environment is incredibly complex and is undergoing
radical change. It's no secret that software licensing
has become a giant thorn in the side of both IT
departments and the business in general. Not only is
today's licensing environment incredibly complex
and becoming tougher, it's also undergoing radical
change. Virtualization, clouds, software as a service
(SaaS), mobile apps and entirely new digital delivery
models
introduce
both
opportunities
and
challengesand alter the stakes dramatically. A new
report from digital security firm Gemalto, "Software
Licensing: Expectations, Challenges and the Future,"
notes that new and evolving models are affecting the
way software vendors and buyers interact. The key
themes the report identifies include: the need for a
framework that supports anywhere, anytime access;
user-centric licensing that revolves around
individuals and not machines; better usage tracking
and pricing models; and a common-use experience
that spans on-premise use, clouds and various
devices. Here are some of the key findings from the
survey of 600 enterprise software users and 180
software vendors. http://goo.gl/XnaDUl

Effectively: To deal with the ever-growing number
of technology and business demands piling up on
their plates, professionals and managers must
constantly find better ways to use their time
effectively. However, there are a host of workplace
distractions to sidetrack employees and managers and
keep them from knocking out tasks and finishing
projects in an efficient manner. In fact, smartphones
and time-wasting Websites cost U.S. companies an
estimated $650 billion a year, according to industry
research, and 53 percent of workers admit that these
distractions negatively affect their productivity. To
develop a sharper focus while taking advantage of
digital shortcuts to increase your productivity,
consider the following 10 apps designed to help you

11 Tips for Giving a Great Speech: Does the
prospect of making a public presentation send you
into a state of panic? If so, then you're far from alone.
In fact, three-quarters of people suffer from speech
anxiety, which means that it's the most common
phobia of all. That said, most employees and
managers who are considered key contributors within
their organizations and industries will need to make a
speech from time to time, and that includes those in
the IT profession. (Remember, it's not all about
programming and other tech skills.) So, to help make
the experience less stressful and more successful,
we're presenting the following 11 tips for giving a
great speech. They include best practices for calming
the nerves, as well as advice about delivery,
preparation and the overall presentation. As is the
case with most professional pursuits, the more time
you invest up front in researching, planning and
practicing for your big event, the more likely it is that
you'll be a hit with your audience. Our tips are

Challenges and Rewards of Deploying IoT
Technology: The vast majority of enterprises have
positioned themselves to collect, manage and store
data from device sensorsin other words, to deploy
Internet of things (IoT) technology, according to a
recent survey from Aeris. The accompanying report,
"The Business of Enterprise IoT," indicates that most
IT departments are developing both IoT and
machine-to-machine (M2M) apps internally. They're
also taking advantage of analytical tools to maximize
the value of IoT data. Through this, they expect to
boost competitive advantage, while reducing day-today costs. To reach these goals, IT organizations will
need to overcome a number of hurdles, including the
need to ensure connectivity while effectively
integrating IoT apps with enterprisewide data and app
systems. "Opportunities will be met with challenges,"
said Janet Jaiswal, vice president of enterprise
marketing at Aeris. "As the number of connected
devices grows, organizations will not only be under
increased pressure to better manage their devices and
obtain data-generated insights to improve operational
efficiencies, but they also will need a deeper
understanding of how best to address the
complexities associated with connectivity and data
consumption
to
lower
operational
costs.
