Greek national strategy on Physical Education


The objective of Physical Education in compulsory education is to contribute
primarily at the physical development of students and also to help mental and spiritual
culture and the harmonious integration in society.
The priority is the students motor skills development and through them the
cultivation of their physical abilities and strengthen of their health.
Students can learn basic knowledge in basketball,volleyball,football,artistic
gymnastic, greek folk dances, swimming, athletics, rhythmic gymnastics, badmigton,
table tennis .
The hours per week of Physical education are:
2- 3 hours per week in elementary schools( depends on the class)
2 hours per week in junior high schoo
1-2 hours per week in senior high school ( lyceum)
The objectives of Physical education
At elementary school students have :
Develop their perceptual abilities: the kinesthetic perception, visual perception,
auditory perception, perception through touch, coordination skills.
Develop simple motor adaptive skills.
Get to know their body through movement.
To satisfy their need for movement
To know and cultivate rhythm and motion elements.
To develop non-verbal communication: expressive movement, creative movement.

To develop imagination and creativity.


To express themselves physically, using their body
Get to know the meaning of the individual and the group.
Learn to respect the rules.
Develop teamwork, cooperation, self respect and communication.
Know traditional games.
Develop simple motor skills.
Develop a positive attitude about virtues such as honesty, fairness, respect for
opponents.
Cultivate elements of Greek folklore.
Gaining knowledge associated with traditional dance, music and singing at local and
national level.
Develop perceptual skills: kinesthetic, visual, auditory perception, coordination skills.
To appreciate the aesthetic elements of movement.

At secondary school students have to:


Physical sector (psychomotor)
Develop motor skills: advanced skills, complex skills.
- Development of natural physical abilities: endurance, strength, speed, flexibility,
agility.
- Promote health and wellness.
- Cultivation of pace.
Emotional sector
- Social objectives: Development of social and mental virtues, such as cooperation,
team spirit, discipline, willpower, responsibility, patience, perseverance and courage.
Developing self-esteem and positive self-perception and self-confidence and the
culture of free and democratic expression.
- Ethical objectives. Development of moral virtues such as honesty, fairness, merit,
respect for opponents, self-esteem, modesty, prudent treatment victory and defeat.

Knowledge area
- Cognitive objectives: Acquiring knowledge on physical education and sport. Know
the rules of the various sports and competitions. Acquisition of knowledge about the
Olympic idea and movement. Acquisition of knowledge associated with traditional
dance, music and singing at local and national level. Acquisition of basic knowledge
of hygiene and first aid.
- Awareness of the need for "lifelong" exercise or sport and the benefits derived from
it, as well as acquisition of sports habits amateur practicing sport (hobbies).
- Estheticians objectives. Assessment of aesthetic elements of movement.
These objectives should be grown in all High School classes. But the priority is the
development of motor skills of students and through them the cultivation of their
physical capabilities and the promotion of health.
The means to achieve the purpose of physical education in high school is: a) Free
motor activities with or without music, b) recognized in our country sports and events
for which there are opportunities to learn at schools, c) the Greek traditional folk
dances and d) swimming, where the possibilities exist.
THE GOAL "LIFELONG PURSUIT FOR HEALTH
We seek
Involving students in exercise of any form, both during school, but mainly after
graduation and throughout their lives, to influence positive mental and physical
health.
To enable the school physical education tovinfluence the behavior of students
aftergraduation, should be associated with promote health through exercise and the
use of leisure time through exercise.
Evaluation
The assessment is an essential element of the educational process and pedagogical
more justified as a means of student feedback and less as a means of achieving the
targets or comparison with other students. Students will be evaluated based on the
following criteria:
- The assimilation of content learning that sports skills.
- The effort, interest and generally their behavior in class.
- Their physical condition.
- Their knowledge of sports topics.
