3 Efficiency: Real World Customer Success

NetApps portfolio of storage efficiency technologies extends capacity beyond a systems raw size and enables
customers to maximize their return on investment (ROI). NetApp storage efficiency solutions let customers control
data growth to increase storage utilization, regain capacity, and improve performance.
Using NetApp's Deduplication and Compression technology together, Data ONTAP provides the average NetApp
customer 2.06TB of storage for every 1TB of raw capacity purchased. (Source: EBI 06/2015)

Customers can realize even higher levels of storage efficiency using technologies such as Thin Provisioning,
FlexClone, and Snapshots. The table below defines specific NetApp storage efficiency solutions.

NetApp Storage Efficiency

Thin Provisioning
NetApp Thin Provisioning is a technology that allocates physical capacity of a volume or file system
as applications write data rather than at the time of provisioning.
Thin Provisioning enables administrators to maintain a single free space buffer pool to service the
data requirements of multiple applications and increase the storage utilization.
Deduplication
NetApp Deduplication removes duplicate blocks, storing only unique blocks of data in volume.
This reduces the amount of space used to store active data and enables the system to store more
bytes of data than the capacity of the available physical storage.
FlexClone
NetApp FlexClone technology creates exact, writeable virtual copies of data volumes, files, and
LUNs without additional storage space. FlexClone volumes use space very efficiently to store only
data that changes between the parent and clone.
The space efficient clones reduce storage footprint, improve productivity, and speed development
and testing for faster time to market.
Compression
NetApp data compression provides transparent data compression inline (data being written to disk)
or post process (data already on disk).
This reduces the amount of write I/O required for each compressed write operation. This also
lowers the data footprint on disk and decreases the time to complete backups.
Snapshot
NetApp Snapshot technology creates instant point-in-time copies of a file system.
Snapshots enable administrators to make frequent instantaneous backups of application data with
no performance impact and minimal storage consumption compared to traditional full backup
methods.
The following link describes NetApp efficiency solutions in greater detail and includes examples:

Drives not actively incorporated into a RAID group are hot spares. Hot spare drives are
automatically added to a RAID group in repair or added by a storage Administrator for additional
capacity. Hot spare drives are ready for immediate inclusion into Usable Capacity.

Parity (Non-Partitioned: 4 Partitioned: 4)

RAID-DP protects data from a double disk failure or block failure without a performance penalty.
Row Parity and Diagonal Parity ensure all data can be reconstructed in the event of a double disk
failure. Parity disks are not hot, as compared to other vendors.

Data (Non-Partitioned: 22 Partitioned: 20)

Drives dedicated to store data such as User created Aggregates are Data drives.

System Allocations
Right Sizing

Normalizes similar drives to the same capacity so they can be

aggregated together into larger storage containers. Right-sizing
allows Data ONTAP to leverage drives from different
manufacturers (with potentially different raw capacities and
geometry) together to build larger storage containers.

Checksums

Checksums are a computed values representing the contents of

a block of data in the WAFL file system and are used to detect
errors as data is written to disk. Checksums validate data
consistency and provide protection against silent data corruption.

System Reserve

This is the capacity required during setup for things like system
overhead, RAID parity and spare drives. This capacity is not
available for user data.
