Task no. 1 and 2 under Topic no. 2

RESEARCH PROBLEM
I. FACTORS TO BE CONSIDERED WHEN SELECTING A PROBLEM AREAS.

How do you choose your topic in research? Are there a guidelines that
you can use in helping yourself in coming up with your research problem?
But, let us clear ourselves for some definition of terms. How do we define a
research problem? According to the book of Calderon, Methods of Research
and Thesis Writing p21, problem was defined as any significant, perplexing
and challenging situation, real or artificial, wherein the solution requires
reflective thinking. On the other hand, research problem was defined as a
problem that someone would like to research. Added to that, it can be
anything that a person finds unsatisfactory or unsettling-Fraenkel, How to
Design and evaluate Research in Education p27. With these, we may simply
define a research problem as a statement where we are in a state of our
concern that we need to go and look for answers for our questions. For us to
determine how we may guide to solve for it.
How do we select a good research problem? Well, this will help you.
There are factors or elements needed to be considered in selecting a
research problem.
1. The goal of your study or of your problem. This answers the
question, why do we need to investigate?
2. Subject Matter or the Topic: What is to be studied?
3. Location of your research: Where is your study to be conducted?
4. Time or the duration of your study: When is your study carried
out?
5. People concern of your study: Who are your respondents?

Added to that, here are the guidelines in choosing a research problem

or topic.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.

It must be chosen by the researcher

It is in the interest of the researcher
It is must be relevant to the researcher
It is must be within the specialization of the researcher
It is must be within the competence of the researcher to tackle
It is must be within the ability of the researcher to finance the
study
7. It is researchable and manageable
8. It is must be ethical
Having all these, for sure you are guided in drafting your research
problem. It may not be easy at first, but you will have one to work on at the
end.

RESEARCH PROBLEM
II. CHARACTERISTICS OF A RESEARCHABLE PROBLEM
When you do have your research problem, try to evaluate for some
characteristics of having a good research topic. Here are some of the
characteristics of a good research problem.
1. It is Feasible. It can be studied without spending much like the time,
money or energy. Since, feasibility is a vital in doing a study.
2. It is clear. It is the center or the focus of your study. So, having a clear
research problem will mean a clear research study.
3. It is significant. What is the importance of your study? Who will be
benefit of it? It is the value of your study. The relevance of your study.
4. It is ethical. It should be, physically or psychologically harmless or it
should not involve in damage to human beings or to the nature.
5. Originality. It should not be a copied work. It should be your own work.
6. SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-bound).
Just like in doing the objective of your lesson plan, SMART. The problem
can be tested. It is easy to measure by using research instruments. The
data are achievable using correct statistical tools to arrive at precise
results. Real results are attained because they are gathered
scientifically and not manipulated or maneuvered. And, time-bound is
required in every activity because the shorter completion of the
activity, the better.

7. It is within the interest of the researcher. How will a researcher search

for it, if he or she is not motivated to work on it? It will be more difficult
and a burden for him.
Identifying the factors in selecting and considering a research
problem and determining the characteristics of researchable problem will for
sure gave us a picture on what to put in our study. It will aide us as we go in
our initial step for our study.
