Objectives:
Students will demonstrate the ability to

Identify and analyze the elements of fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and

argumentation.
Write effectively for many different purposes by experimenting with
various drafting and revision techniques such as using several genres,
voices, points of view, sentence structures, word usage, and styles.
Write well about literature with concern, not only for content, but also
with grammar styles and structure.
Determine universal meaning in literary works.

Late work policy:

Late work will be accepted but for partial credit. Please refer to district
policy for late work.

This is a tentative list of the things we will be reading, discussing, and

completing this semester. We reserve the right to add, change, or drop any
item from this list.
In most cases, with each unit and novel I assign a writing assignment,
study guides, and a final test or project.

Before you walked into Captain John L. Chapin High School, you knew two
things about classroom discipline:
1. You cannot learn while others are disrupting the class.

a. You distract others from learning when you are disrupting the
class.

Therefore we only have one very simple class rule:

Do not do anything to disrupt the learning process.

How does a student disrupt learning?

Talking while someone else (especially the teacher) is talking.

Coming to class late.
Daydreaming, passing notes or communicating through text message.
Having off-topic conversations or talking too loud during group work.
Forgetting to bring materials to class (i.e. pen, pencil, paper, book,
homework, etc).

What can a student do to prevent disrupting the class?

1. Always have a good attitude when you come to class and always try
your best to succeed.
2. Read and commit to following the John L. Chapin High School Student
Agenda.
What is the procedure for classroom discipline?
The procedure for handling disruptions depends on each individual situation
and will be left up to my judgment on a case-by-case basis. Possible
consequences for disrupting learning include:

Verbal warnings
Seat moved
Parent call/parent conference
Referral

ISS/Suspension = Students assigned to ISS/Alternative will be given work

but obviously being sent to ISS/Alternative will prevent you from participating
in class and much of the material will be missed. Students assigned to
ISS/Alternative are expected to compensate and be prepared to take tests
and make up any work that was missed or that was not sent to
ISS/Alternative immediately upon return.
STUDENTS: I have read this discipline plan and understand it and will honor
it.
