BAGUIO CITY, Philippines Ah, Baguio its cool climate makes sharing a hot,
comforting meal that much more enjoyable. And whether its a fine dining
restaurant or a hole-in-the-wall joint, Baguio Citys gastronomic offerings caters to
all tastes and budgets. (READ: Baguio City: Your complete weekend itinerary)
While were all familiar with Good Shepherds Ube Jam and La Trinidads fresh
strawberries, local restaurants around the city still have plenty of items on their
menus worth trying. Here are some of them:

Homemade green tea ice cream at Chaya

Legarda Road

CHAYA'S CREAM ANMITSU. Enjoy a medley of fresh fruits, red beans, and Baguios best
homemade green tea ice cream. Photo by Nikka Corsino

Japanese restaurant Chaya serves rich, authentic Japanese fare, from fresh tuna
and salmon sashimi, to crisp vegetable and seafood tempura. But it is their
homemade green tea ice cream a small serving of which comes complimentary
at the end of every meal that really takes the cake. Served with red beans and,
in the case of the Cream Anmitsu, a generous serving of fruits in season, the
green tea ice cream makes for the perfectly refreshing cap to a classic Chaya
meal.

Lagud (Strawberry beer) at Baguio Craft Brewery

Baguios first craft brewery offers a variety of flavors that will keep both the
curious and the avid craft beer fan on their toes. Try the distinct flavor of the
strawberry beer,Lagud, which is highly recommended with the buffalo wings.
Other beer variants are, among others, Kabunyan (Wheat Beer), Dalo (Brown
Ale), Kraken (Baltic Porter), Ripe (Passion Fruit Beer), Englishman in New York
(American Pale Ale), Message in a Bottle (India Pale Ale).

Dark beer cheesecake at Ozark Diner

Ozark Diner

You probably wont eat cheesecake and down it with beer, but theres another
nay, more ingenious way of doing it: the dark beer cheesecake, which you can
indulge in at Ozark Diner along Bareng Drive in Bakakeng. And if youre still up

for another slice, also try the Chocolate Siling Labuyo cheesecake (yes, complete
with candied chillies on top).

Balbacua by Urban Camote, Ili Likha Artist Village

Assumption Road

WHILE IT'S HOT. Enjoy a steaming bowl of Balbacua at Balbacua by Urban Kamote at the Ili Likha
Artist Village. Photo by Nikka Corsino

How far can P50 get you? At Balbacua by Urban Camote at the Ili Likha Artist
Village along Assumption Road, Baguios newest food community, you can get a
steaming bowl of balbacua.
Balbacua is a Southern Mindanao beef stew dish, slow-cooked for six hours and
served with your choice of mountain rice or noodles. Factor in the places rustic,
artsy ambiance and convenient location and youve got yourself your newest
Baguio haunt.

8-course degustation at Mama's Table

888A Ambuklao Road

Chef Vicky Tinios private dining at her home is a celebration of fine food. A bread
board preludes the eight-course degustation, and includes freshly baked goods
from Baguio kitchens such as Cafe by the Ruins and the Baguio Country Club.
These come with Chef Vickys own creations chicken liver pat, artichoke farm
spread, semi-cured tomatoes, and blue cheese mousse. The course starts with
the amuse bouche, soup, intermezzo 1 (to clear the palate for the next dishes),
seafood, intermezzo 2, meat, digestif, and dessert.
There is no menu, and Chef Vicky accommodates only one group a day
(minimum of six people in a group to book, at P1,500 per person with 10%
service charge). Booking at least a week in advance is required.

Lomo Ribs at Canto, Ketchup Food Community

Romulo Drive, across Wright Park

WORTH IT. Find out the reason behind the long lines with a serving of Cantos Lomo Ribs. Photo by
Nikka Corsino

Its easy to see why Canto, a restaurant at the Ketchup Food Community, is
always full with diners (with more lining up outside): the lomo ribs, one of the few
offerings on its menu, are just mouthwatering.
Served with an excellent salad and either mashed potato or rice, its hard to
believe half a slab goes for only P190. A whole slab which can probably feed
up to three people is at P270.
Head to Canto early for lunch to avoid lining up, especially on weekends. The
restaurant is closed on Mondays.

Death by chocolate cake at Hill Station Bistro

Upper Session Road; Camp John Hay Technohub

LIVE A LITTLE. Taste one of the citys most sinfully sweet offerings at Hill Station. Photo by Nikka
Corsino

This dessert sounds very intriguing, doesnt it? Take one spoonful and wait for all
the sensations to register hot, sweet, and cold and its easy to realize the
inspiration behind its name.
Each serving goes for P110, and is available at the Hill Station restaurant along
Upper Session Road (Casa Vallejo Building) and at the new Hill Station Bistro at
the Camp John Hay Technohub.

Chona's Delight at Tea House

Session Road

TRY. Forget how it looks; take one big spoonful and see why its called Chonas Delight. Photo by
Nikka Corsino

Call it a cake, pudding, or whatever Chonas Delight, a combination of moist

chocolate cake, cream, and still more chocolate, is a piece of sweet heaven
inside an unglamorous microwavable container. One bowl goes for P130, and
theres also a newer Strawberry Delight variant to try.

Superwomom.net shares 8 magic restaurants with great food finds, sans pork
and beef, in the Summer Capital of the Philippines.
By http://www.superwomom.net

1. Cafe by the Ruins

23 Chuntug Street, Baguio City

(074) 442 4010

I think that when you go to Baguio, you need to have a dining experience at Cafe by the
Ruins. And since it's very near our hotel, we had our first Baguio meal here. The place was
rustic and very Baguio, I must say. And coming from a 6-hour trip, we were famished to say
the least. I love the pinikpikan and the risotto. The pinikpikan was very savory, the best I've
tasted. I also like the creamy texture of the risotto, plus points for the wild rice.
What we ordered:
Tia Olympia's Fresh Lumpia - P145; Julienned vegetables such as carrots, cabbage,
string beans, camote, onion, etc. Sauteed with garlic and tofu, wrapped in crepe with sauce
and chopped nuts
Pinikpikan - P180; Cordillera ritual chicken soup with etag (salted pork) and ginger
Risotto Rita - P280; Creamy chicken, mushroom and celery served with mountain rice
Ernie's Kamote Bread and Herb Cheese - P80 and P45; Enriched bread with Cordillera
camote, milk and honey; Ricotta and yoghurt cheeses blended with butter, garlic, chives and
paprika

2. Pizza Volante

Session Road, Baguio City

(074) 445 0777

Since we were dead-tired from all the walking and playing for the day, this was a no-brainer
pick for us. We saw it and had our dinner here. The place was packed. Gladly, we were able
to find our seat. I love that it's cheap and yet yummy and filling. The best for me was their
Pomelo Salad.
What we ordered:
Mango-Cottage Cheese Pie - P80; Ripe mangoes, cottage cheese, and organic brown
sugar are just some of the healthful ingredients that go into this very satisfying and delightful
dessert

Pizza Marengo (6") - P88; Chunks of chicken breast sauteed with mushrooms, onions, and
bellpeppers.
Pomelo Salad with Roasted Chicken - P120; A heathful pile of organic, romaine lettuce,
tomato, bell peppers, watercress and onions with virgin olive oil and wine dressing. Served
with roasted chicken
Four Cheese Pizza (6") - P88; A tangy combination of mozzarella, cheddar, parmesan and
blue cheese

3. Bliss Cafe

G/F Hotel Elizabeth, Gibraltar St., cor. J. Felipe, Baguio City

(074) 619-0367

No meat allowed. That for me is truly bliss. For a no-pork, no-beef foodie like me, everything
in their menu is something I can eat. And you wouldn't know it's non-meat. What I'm truly
happy about is the fact that you can eat whatever it is in the menu and not worry about the
ingredients that go with it. At masarap siya.
What we ordered:
Dalandan Juice - P40; Freshly squeezed Philippine orange juice
Strawberry Shake - P75; A sweet-sour mix of strawberries and yoghurt
Grilled Cheese with Veggie Sausage - P180; Wheat bread with cheese, tomatoes, lettuce
and sausage-less sausage served with corn tortillas
Rotini Satorini - P190; Spaghetti noodles cooked al dente topped with a sauce of juicy
tomato, olive oil and black olives
Pumpkin-Carrot Soup - P80; A creamy and healthy combination rich in fiber and beta
carotene
Frantic Fruit - P200; A fresh mix of bananas, mangoes, strawberries and blue berries
drizzled with honey

4. Choco-late de Batirol

Igorot Garden, Camp John Hay, Baguio City

(074) 446-7006
A Baguio experience won't be complete without sampling a merienda fare. And we were
spot on with this food place. I think we picked perfectly when we decided to eat here at four
in the afternoon. We were recharged because of their chocolate drink, which was perfect for
the bibingka and suman. And me, being a lugaw-lover, couldn't possibly pass up on the
arroz caldo. It was so reminiscent of my youth, how after siesta, we were served these.
What we ordered:
Traditional Blend - P80; Nutty chocolate drink with the right consistency of creaminess and
thickness

Suman sa Lihia - P64; Sticky glutinous rice with freshly grated coconut and muscovado
sugar
Arroz Caldo - P95; Pinoy congee with chicken topped with crispy garlic bits and spring
onions
Choco Banana Shake - P145; Cold concoction of banana and chocolate
Bibingka - P105; Soft and fluffy rice cake thinly slathered with butter and topped with
freshly grated coconut

5. Cafe Sabel (at the Bencab Museum)

Km. 6 Asin Road, Tadiangan, Tuba, Benguet

(074) 442-7165

Sabel is the muse of National Artist Bencab. If you've toured the place, you'll somehow have
an idea who she is. So it didn't come as a surprise that the resto is named after her. To be
having breakfast at this place, where good comfort food is served, while overlooking the
mountains and its lush greenery, was energizing. And the morning sun, with all its majesty,
casting its glory, not just on the surroundings but on our table, was truly mesmerizing. It was
for me, the best Baguio dining experience.
What we ordered:
Tarragon Tea - P90; A mild and aromatic beverage
Hot Choco - P90; Not-too-sweet chocolate concoction
Spicy Tuyo Pasta - P180; Tuyo and mushrooms in olive oil over spaghetti noodles served
with toasted wheat bread
Taal Rice (Smoked Fish with Salted Egg) - P175; Brown rice mixed with smoked fish or
tinapa, complemented with salted egg
Tuna Omelette - P175; A healthy protein-packed scrambled eggs with tuna chunks

6. Hillstation

Casa Vallejo, Upper Session Road, Baguio City

(074) 424-2734, (074) 423 9100, (074) 423 9558

It's written on their website: "Included in the Miele Guide of Asia's Finest Restaurants
2012/2013." Ok, that's enough reason for us to try this resto. And we weren't disappointed.
It has that "poshy" vibe. And the pine trees just outside their windows and the cool breeze
probably had a lot to do with it. And oh, I must mention that there's a little bookshop
adjacent to the restaurant which was very convenient for me and my kids since we found
something to dip our fingers into while waiting for our food to be served.
What we ordered:
Penne ala Vodka - P290; Penne pasta lavished with a peppery, vodka-laced cream and
tomato sauce

Vanilla Cinnamon - P110; Creamy vanilla with a mild hint of cinnamon

Crispy Duck Flakes - P380; Flaked and fried duck meat over mountain rice served with
laing sa gata
Grilled Juicy Chicken Breast - P195; Grilled chicken breast with dijon dressing on
baguette topped with mango chutney, paired with crispy potato chips
Baked Spinach and Artichoke Dip - P135; Creamy and cheesy baked dip served with
Melba toast

7. Central Park Restaurant

Kisad Road, Baguio City

(074) 447-0659

It was a cold night and we got hungry, and we were bitten by the lazy bug. Since this was
just around the corner from our hotel, it was hard to miss. We went in and ordered. Lo, and
behold. We were very pleased with our food. And we didn't have to pay for cab fare. We
especially liked the Roasted Duck Noodle. We really felt it was sulit.
What we ordered:
Chicken Feet - P55; Fried, marinated and steamed dim sum
Roasted Duck Noodle - P140; Sweet-salty roasted duck paired with a steaming bowl of
noodle soup
Seafoods Noodle - P95; Noodle soup with assorted seafood balls and crab sticks
Buco Pandan - P60; Chewy pandan flavored gelatin and buco strips with not-too-sweet
cream

8. Oh My Gulay

La Azotea Building, 108 Session Road, Baguio City

(074) 446-0108
Our last stop before we left for Manila was yet another vegetarian restaurant. It was really
for me. I love Baguio. It offers a lot of choices for a non-carnivore like me. And with two kids
in tow, the food adventure became even more exciting and fun. This restaurant is located on
the fifth floor of a green building somewhere in the middle of Session Road. Had we not
read about it, we wouldn't be able to experience the uniqueness it has to offer. The
atmosphere is artsy, being owned by one of Baguio's renowned artists, the film-maker Kidlat
Tahimik. Vegetables served in unconventional ways, surprisingly, were pleasant-palate
treats.
What we ordered:
Lumpia Salad - P130; Crispy tofu spring rolls on a bed of mixed greens tossed with honey
mustard and Asian dressing

Gulay Burger with Kabute Sibuyas at Gravy - P140; Brown rice topped with two pieces
veggie puso ng saging burger, mushroom, onions, and gravy
Anak ng Puttanesca - P130; Spaghetti topped with a sauce of tomatoes and garlic,
simmered with mushrooms and olives enriched with cayenne pepper
Saging at Mani Love Affair - P80; Crepe stuffed with banana and peanut butter topped
with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce
Dayap Iced Tea - P75; Lime-infused brewed iced tea
Limonada - P75; Freshly squeezed native lemonade
Oh My Gulay Rice - P140; Native brown rice with ten vegetables in season mixed with
Mongolian sauce, topped with steamed tofu and omelet

Superwomom's Top Picks (Baguio Food Adventure

Top 10 Yummiest
Restaurants in Baguio
Published December 17, 2013 3:41pm

On the lookout for something yummy while in Baguio City, GMA

News TVs award-winning info-tainment countdown show Ang
Pinaka went up to the Summer Capital of the Philippines in search
of the top 10 hottest dining spots. Be sure to bring our list when you
visit the City of Pines!
10. Canto

Canto is a ribs haven in Baguio Citys Ketchup Food Community, a food court of sorts
made up of five al fresco restaurants that showcase different themes and specialties.
Crowd favorites from Canto include their veggie pizza (P150), thin crust pizza topped

with arugula and alfalfa sprouts, and canto burger (P130). The ultimate bestseller,
meanwhile, is the lomo ribs (P350) with salad and mashed potatoes. For dessert, try
the restaurants red velvet cake (P90)
Visit Canto, located inside the Ketchup Food Community, along Romulo Drive, Brgy.
Lualhati, near Wright Park.
9. Bliss Cafe

Bliss Cafe is the go-to place for organic vegetarian meals in Baguio. The restaurant
takes inspiration from Buddhist principles as evidenced not only by their vegetarian
affair but also interiors. Little Buddha statues and brass gongs serve as decorations.
Aside from Buddhism-inspired items, contemporary artworks are exhibited, as well as

whimsical ones like the smiling paper mache horse that will greet you at the entrance.
If you want to taste the bounty of Baguio right off the bat, try Bliss Cafes strawberry
fields salad (P200) heaped, of course, with fresh strawberries and tussled with arugula,
iceberg lettuce and yogurt-honey dressing.
For the ultimate cheat, order haiku (P75), Bliss Cafes vegetarian chicharon. Like the real
deal, but light and definitely guilt-free.
Try then heavier meals like the energetic embutido. The carrot and potato stuffing
surprisingly has a rather meaty flavor. Pair the embutido too with the Blissmix rice
(P30), a combination Kalinga red red and Isabela white rice
Go healthy in Baguio by visiting Bliss Cafe at the Hotel Elizabeth, 1 J. Felipe Corner
Gibraltar Street.
8. Star Cafe

Star Cafe is a no-frills Chinese restaurant that also doubles as a bake shop. When you
enter the resto, its humongous round and square cinnamon bread will greet you. This
item sells hot like pancakes, by the way. For only P70, you can get an upsized version of
cinnamon rolls that can rival your favorites from Cinnabon.

Started in the1940s, Star Cafe is considered the oldest restaurant in Baguio. Recipes
that have been served through the decades include their Star canton (P285), fried
shrimp with ham (P500), and beef broccoli.
The Star canton is heaped with seafood and crisp vegetables of the Benguet province.
Pair the pancit with the golden-fried camaron rebosado, shrimp meat and ham coated in
bread crumbs. The fried shrimp with ham, or camaron con jamon, is made flavorful by
Star Cafes sweet and sour sauce. Their beef broccoli (P290), meanwhile, is drenched in
rich oyster sauce. The tender beef contrasts well with the crunchy broccoli.
If youre craving for good, old Chinese food, head on over to Star Cafe at 39 Session
Road, Baguio City.
7. Iggys Inn and Bonuan Seafood Restaurant

The cozy and homey interiors of Iggys Inn and Bonuan Seafood Restaurant perfectly
complement their lutong-bahay meals. Dining in this resto makes you feel like youre
having lunch at your grandparents home.

Start healthy or just forget about your diet with Iggys kilawing kambing (P150) and
chicharon bulaklak (P165) appetizers. A light dish, the kilawin is heaped with thin slices
of goat meat. The chicharon bulaklak is crispy and tasty as expected. Whats different
about Iggys version of this pulutan is that they drain the fat from the mesentry. Its as
healthy as chicharon bulaklak could get.
For seafood viands, try the nilasing na hipon sa gin (P150) and inihaw na bangus (P180).
The nilasing na hipon is marinated for hours before being deep-fried. The inihaw na
bangus packs in an earthy flavor. The fish itself is also meaty. At Iggys, they choose the
best seafood ingredients.
For dessert, make sure to try the leche flan (P45). Iggys leche flan is firm, creamy, and
rich. The resto, however, adds a twist by making you add calamansi juice on top of the
leche flan. How does it taste? Try it yourself by visiting Iggys at 25-A Southdrive Road,
Baguio City.
6. Cafe Sabel

Cafe Sabel, BenCabs perennial muse, is a tribute to the bounty of Baguio with their
farm-to-table dishes. Most of the ingredients at Cafe Sabel, particularly fruits and
vegetables, are all plucked from their own farm, making the restaurant a prime choice
for foodies who want to go healthy while in the City of Pines.

A visit to Cafe Sabel is also a feast for the eyes. Located inside BenCab Museum, diners
can opt to tour the different galleries set-up by the famous National Artist for the Arts
himself and partner local artists. The restaurant itself is a pretty sight with
contemporary artworks and framed exhibit posters of BenCab lining the wall, and
colorful chairs and tables giving the cafe a whimsical feel.
To start off your meal, go for Cafe Sabels farm fresh salad (P150) with strawberry
vinaigrette dressing (P150)---crisp iceberg lettuce and carrots tussled with alfafa sprouts
and cherry tomatoes.
Try then Chef Mikes personal favorite, spicy tuyo pasta (P190). The saltiness of the tuyo
is complemented by the strong flavors of basil leaves and chili. Dont take big bites as
the extra kick towards the end may be too much handle.
BenCabs favorite, meanwhile, is duck flakes rice meal (P250), a dish similar in concept
to adobo flakes. If you want to taste the full flavor of the shredded duck meat, try it
without the accompanying combination of black rice and highland rice. Mix it, however,
with the egg salad to enhance the mild flavor of the meat.
For refreshments, try the restos lime juice with basil. A rather unique concoction, the
sweetness of the basil mixes well with the sourness of the lime syrup. End your meal
with Cafe Sabels refreshing panna cotta guava. The milky gelatin is not too
overpowering, making the sweetness of the guava pulp stand out.
Cafe Sabel is located at the Ground Level, BenCab Museum, Km 6. Asin Road, Baguio
City.
5. Sage

Opened just this year, Sage is already creating some noise in Baguios culinary scene
with their fusion of Asian and Western dishes.
For starter meals, try their nacho platter supreme (P180) accompanied with four

different dips: salsa, cheese, Asian, and teriyaki. If you want something more light, order
the shrimp pomelo salad with Thai dressing (P180).
For heavier meals, the creamy bulalo steak (P260), a meal perfect for the cold chilly
nights in Baguio.
Satisfy your sweet tooth then with the roti supreme (P180), roti topped with ice cream,
peaches, and condensed milk.
Visit Sage at 95 Military Cut-Off Road, Baguio City.
4. Mothers Garden

Mothers Garden has been serving healthy organic meals since 2010 and has been the
go-to place of tourists and locals who want to experience oasis in rapidly urbanizing
Baguio City.

Bestsellers from their menu include the sausage platter (P279) and frutti di mare (P239)
or fruits of the sea as the pasta is full of shrimp, scallops, and other seafood. Try also
When the Mountain Meets the Sea, playfully named as the dish has both scallops and
angus beef tenderloin flavored with red wine.
For something light, order Mothers Garden Organic Salad (P209), vegetables and fruits
fresh from the restaurants garden mixed with homemade dressing and edible flowers.
Go organic at Mothers Garden, located at Upper Fairview Road, Quezon Hill Proper,
Baguio City.
3. Chefs Home

One should not be fooled by the unassuming facade of Chefs Home. This quaint hole-inwall restaurant is a culinary gem with its Asian fusion offerings by Chef Alvin, a
Malaysian chef who left his executive chef position in a hotel in Phuket, Thailand to be
with his Filipina wife, who then was also working in the same hotel as a lounge singer.

Trust us. The food is as juicy as their love story.

Start with something light by ordering the crispy papaya salad. A Thai dish, lime and
peanuts serve as the main flavoring of the papaya strips. Go for Thai again with Chef
Alvins tom yum soup and taste the gentle flavors of kaffir lime.
For a taste of something Pinoy, order the stir fried squid with salted egg. The salted egg
was mashed to make the sauce so the dish does not quite look appetizing. But dont let
looks deceive you! This meal had host Maey B. begging Chef Alvin to open the
restaurant on a Sunday so she could eat again.
The deep fried whole seabass, meanwhile, is a bit of a novel dish in terms of
appearance, with the fish positioned as if its still swimming. Taste-wise, it doesnt
disappoint. Chef Alvin prepares the fried chunks both in chili basil and chili garlic lime.
The sweetness of the basil works well with the chili. The lime, on the other hand,
provides a subtle zesty flavor.
For beverages, try the Teh tarik, the Malaysian version of milk-tea. Unlike commercial
milk-teas we have in the metro, the Teh tarik has a mild, sweet flavor. Its also a simple
concoction. No pearls or puddings for this one.
Order the homemade roti Chefs Home with banana and coffee sauce for dessert. The
dish is similar in concept to crepes but the chewy roti makes all the difference.
If you want to dine at Chefs Home, better make a reservation (0916 444 5756). The
restaurant only houses around 5 to 7 tables as Chef Alvin is not to keen on expanding
his food haven. He wants undivided attention while cooking to provide customers with a
one-of-a-kind culinary experience.
Quality over quantity for this hands-on chef.
Visit Chefs Home at 13 Outlook Drive Corner Romulo Drive, Baguio City.

2. Happy Tummy

Happy Tummy is a restaurant located inside the Ketchup Food Community that can
make any tummy happy with their classic Thai dishes.

Happy Tummys tom yum (P150) has a thick consistency than most. The soup is full of
plum tomatoes and huge prawns. Another classic Thai dish, the pad thai (P150, is also a
must-try. Try their chicken pandan (P150) also and get to dip the already flavorful
chicken meat in Happy Tummys tamarind sauce.
If youre feeling more adventurous, try the catfish with green mango salad (P150) and
crispy tilapia with tamarind sauce (P200).
Be happy at Happy Tummy, located at Barangay Lualhati, Romulo Drive, beside Wright
Park.
1. O Mai Khan

O Mai Khan literally means come over, a fitting name as locals and tourists flock the
restaurant for their Mongolian barbecue buffet (P150-210) and hot pot (P160-420).
Like most Mongolian buffet restos, you start off your buffet experience at O Mai Khan

by choosing your own meat, vegetables, and other ingredients to pile into your bowl.
Because the restaurant is located in Baguio, expect only the crunchiest and freshest
vegetables.
If you want a different choice of rice meal, try O Mai Khans Ania Khans Bulgalbi
(P240), or broiled beef ribs, tartars chicken (P170)and shrimp tempura (P240). For
something light, order Ania Khans Salad (P110).
Come on over to O Mai Khan at Upper Session Road (Engineers Hill), Riza Park, Baguio.
