Monumen Kapal Selam (Submarine Monument) or abbreviated as Monkasel, is a

submarine museum located at Embong Kaliasin, Genteng, Surabaya. This

monument is located at the center of Surabaya, precisely on Pemuda Street and
by Kalimas riverbank. The submarine is the original form of KRI Pasopati with hull
number 410, one of Indonesias Navy fleet . It was made in Vladivostok, Russia,
in 1952 and included as SS type Whisky Class. This submarine was disabled on
January 25, 1990 and assembled to be a submarine monument (Monkasel) on
July 1, 1995. Monkasel was inaugurated by Mr. Kasal Admiral Arief Kushariadi on
June 27, 1998 and opened to the public on July 15, 1998.
KRI Pasopati 410 used to play an important role in enforcing the state
sovereignty and the law of the sea, such as in the operation of Trikora in 1962.
This submarine was involved in Aru Sea Battle to release West Papua from Dutch
occupation. Thereis also movie screening about the battle in Aru Sea here. If you
come to this place, there will be local guide to escort you.
There is a unique stroy behind the existence of Monkasel. One night, Mr. Drajat
Budiyanto, former chief engineer of KRI Pasopati 410 (made in Russia) dan
former chief engineer of KRI Cakra 401 (made in West German), dreaming of
being ordered by the Navy Chief of Staff to bring this submarine sailing accross
the Kalimas. That dream became reality when he was ordered to display this
submarine beside Surabaya Plaza. They separate this submarine to several
pieces then carried to the land and assembled back to be a a whole submarine.
