History

 In 2000 in wirless broadband they

are two major problems
1.There was no standard established.
2. the high LMDS frequency spectrum
was expensive to build equipment.
Internet access before Wimax
 Broadband access.
 Wifi access.
 Dial up access.
Generation of Wimax
 Exciting new technologies such as
advanced WOFDM
 the Moore's Law progression of IC
technology and manufacture
 wimax is the framework for the global
wireless broadband revolution not just
a 'technology'
What is Wimax?
 The WiMax standard combines the
broadband and wireless.
 Based on the IEEE 802.16 Air
Interface Standard.
 “last mile” of broadband.
How Wimax Works
 A Wimax tower.
 A Wimax receiver.
 Backhaul.
Wimax protocol

 Protocol Structure of IEEE 802.16

IEEE 802.16 Protocol
Architecture

. It has 4 layers: Convergence, MAC,

Transmission and physical
Wimax modulation techniques
 Here three modulation techniques are
used
1.qam64
2.qam16
3.qpsk
Modulation Non-Line of Site Partial Line of Site Line of Site
QAM64 .6 miles 3 miles 5 miles

QAM16 .8 miles 5 miles 8.5 miles

QPSK 1.1 miles 9 miles 14 miles

What can wimax do?
 WiMAX operates on the same general
principles as WiFi.
 WiMAX should be able to handle up to
70 megabits per second.
 WiMAX outdistances WiFi by miles
IEEE 802.16 Specifications
 Range - 30-mile (50-km) radius from
base station.
 Speed - 70 megabits per second
 Line-of-sight not needed between
user and base station.
 Frequency bands - 2 to 11 GHz and
10 to 66 GHz.
Wimax service
 WiMAX actually can provide two forms
of wireless service:
1.non-line-of-sight service.
2.line-of-sight service.
Wimax growth
 WiMax, a technology that can provide
wireless broadband coverage over an
area of eight to 10 miles
Wimax growth
 World wide sale of wimax
equipment
2004 $20 million
2005 $40 million
2006 $160 million
2007 $500 million
2008 $1 billion
2009 $1.6 billion
Wimax features
 Wireless rather than wired access,
so it would be a lot less expensive
than cable or DSL and much easier to
extend to suburban and rural areas
 Broad coverage like the cell phone
network instead of small WiFi
hotspots
WiMax Competing Technologies
 Difference between WiMax, WLAN and Bluetooth

Parameters WiMax WLAN Bluetooth

Frequency 2 ~V 11 GHz 2.4 GHz Varies

Range ~31 miles ~100 metres ~10 metres

Data Transfer Rate 70mbps 11 ~V 55mbps 20 ~V 55mbps

Users 1000s > 10 > 10

application
 “Last mile” broadband connections.
 Hotspots and cellular backhaul.
 high-speed enterprise connectivity for
business.
WiMax is...

 The next generation of WiFi, or

Wireless networking technology that
will connect you to the Internet at
faster speeds and from much longer
ranges than current wireless
technology allows
wiMax Promises...

Up to a ten (10) mile range without wires

Broadband speeds without cable or T1
Handles "last mile" access in remote areas
Licencing and equipment due in 2006
Affordable technology
