Cuba Study Abroad

Art and the Humanities

Instructional intent
This study abroad program will
provide students with an
opportunity to learn about the
history of Cuba, 19th century
visual arts, contemporary art
practices, the world renowned
Cuban ballet, as well as the
Afro-Cuban influences in dance
and music. This program will
expose the Santa Fe student to
a different culture with a
unique perspective of Cuba
considering that the country is
currently undergoing incredible
changes in its social and
political landscape. This course
will provide the student with an
experience to expound on their
global perspectives.

ART 1001C - Art Fundamentals


This course introduces students to a guided investigation of Cuban
history, architecture, and the visual arts.

HUM 2020 - Intro to Humanities


This Course introduces the student to the range of ideas, critical approaches to creative
work, and critical reflection about art, music, dance, architecture, and culture of Cuba. Part
of the class will be taught on sight in Havana with the city providing a living classroom of
the arts and humanities

Prof. Daniel Stepp

Daniel Stepp received an MFA in painting from


the New York Academy of Art and a B.A. in
graphic design from the University of Florida.
He has been an instructor at Santa Fe College
for over 15 years and co-led study abroad
programs in Europe and Costa Rica. He has
taught classes in studio art and lectured in
humanities as well. Daniel has exhibited
nationally and been a contributor to the John
Erickson Museum of Art, participating in
performance based work in Baltimore, Miami,
and New York, His and been included in
numerous publications including Oxford
American.

Prof. Ral Villarreal


Ral Villarreal was born
in San Francisco de
Paula, Havana, Cuba
Over the past 30 years
Villarreal has exhibited
his art in 20 oneperson exhibits and
over 400 group exhibits
in the United States,
Canada, Cuba, Costa
Rica, Germany, Italy,
Spain, and China.

Villarreals book, Hemingways Cuban Son,


based on his father Rens memoirs of his
friendship with the famous American
author was published by The Kent State
University Press in 2009.
