Purpose and Major Challenges of the Role

This is a senior mechanical engineers position and a specialist position within NZRC to provide
technical expertise in the fields of engineering, construction, and maintenance, with the prime focus
of assuring asset integrity and maintaining the commercial performance for the business.
To assist with the development and monitoring the effectiveness of engineering strategies,
standards, specifications and work instructions. The aim of which is to minimising operating costs
while maintaining a high technical and commercial performance with due regard to legislative
requirements and HSE issues.
To produce accurate work and demonstrate attention to detail whilst being able to communicate
complex ideas and issues in simple, clear language (both verbal and written) so others can
understand.

Role accountabilities
a) Provide technical advice and support to the Business on all matters relating to mechanical plant,
pressure equipment, and storage tanks to assist in the maintenance and improvement of the
integrity of these assets.
b) Provide cost effective solutions (directly or via specialist input) to integrity issues, adopting a
value-added approach to engineering deliverables that are fit-for-purpose.
c) Maintain a knowledge base with regards to technical updates, technical advice, standards,
specifications, computer tools, new techniques, best practices, etc by maintaining contacts with
equipment manufacturers, SGSI and other external relevant organisations.
d) Provide technical support for project leaders in the design of new plant and equipment.
e) Prepare and approve calculations, technical notes, requisitions, specifications, drawings and
similar deliverables.
f)

Provide input into job safety analyses, preparation of workpacks and permitry for projects and
maintenance work as required. To ensure our legislative responsibilities are maintained and
auditable

g) Review the effectiveness of engineering strategies and activities in support of overall business
objectives, legislative requirements and assurance of technical integrity of facilities.

h) Develop and maintain mechanical engineering standards, specifications and procedures for
asset plant and equipment as required.
i)

Provide recommendations for spares requirements.

j)

Review new plant and equipment proposals for standardisation and conformance of
specifications and drawings. Adhere to International Standards, DEPs and NZRC Specifications
as applicable for selection of new equipment. Advise the business on correct operating
procedures for new equipment.

k) Be the focal point for the Cold Cut Plug and Weld (CCPW) and Hot Tap procedures.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

Preferred

Mechanical Engineering Degree or Equivalent

Chartered Engineer or MIPENZ

5 years experience in mechanical engineering in a

petrochemical environment.

10 years experience in mechanical

engineering in a petrochemical
environment.

Performing fitness for service assessments

API 579 assessor

Strong working knowledge in use of Caesar, Auto-pipe,

Pv-elite.
Strong knowledge of ASME, API, PD5500 and
AS/NZS, codes and standards.
