Biology 20- Unit 4: Human Systems Chapter 8

TITLE: Digestion Review Class

Total Time: 85 minutes

DATE:

November 26, 2015

Specific Outcome Addressed:

1. 20D1.1k identify the principal structures of the digestive system;
i.e.,
mouth, esophagus, stomach, sphincters, small and large
intestines, liver, pancreas, gall bladder
2. 20D1.2k describe the chemical nature of carbohydrates, lipids
and proteins and their enzymes; i.e., carbohydrases, lipases and
proteases
3. 20D1.3k explain enzyme action and factors influencing their
action; i.e., temperature, pH, substrate concentration, feedback
inhibition, competitive inhibition
4. 20D1.4k describe the chemical and physical processing of matter
through the digestive system into the circulatory system

Lesson Objective: By the end of this lesson students will be able to:
- Identify the structures of the digestive system
- Describe carbs, lipids, and proteins and their enzymes that break
them down
- Explain the role of enzymes within the digestive process.
- Explain the processing of food through the digestive system
Materials: pen/pencil, binder, textbook, personal device, large thin plastic
bag, newspaper, paper bags, zip-lock bags, candies, sponges, spray bottles
of water, trash can = food particle

Activity
Introduce the Digestive System Simulation activity that students will
be doing. Assign all students the role of an organ, including
enzymes, within the digestive system. Have students line up
shoulder to shoulder in the back portion of the room, in the order
that the organs are within the human body.
Place the food particle at the head of the tube, and a trash can at
the other end of the tube. Make sure to give ALL instructions to
students before beginning the activity to avoid chaos. Assign the
following roles to students and verify that they are following the
instructions. Tell students that as the food particle is passed to them,
they must narrate what they are doing to the food particle and why.

This will support each students understanding of the role of the

digestive organs.
Teeth - tear food apart (break plastic bag)
Saliva - use spray bottles to moisten food particle
Stomach - tear small bags apart
Pancreatic juices - spray food
Small Intestine - absorbs food, find bags of candy and pass to
blood (the teacher can be blood)
Large Intestine - reabsorbs water, sponge up water on the floor
Rectum/Anus - puts the waste papers in the trash can
Include any enzymes that are present within the digestive system.

min.

With the remainder of the class time, the class will play a Kahoot game to
further review the class material. The teacher can also spend time to
answer any and all student questions to help clear up misconceptions and
prepare students for their Chapter test on Monday.
